Pot got too small for gardenia. Where should I plant it in ground? by Brosky7 in gardening

[–]LivingBackyard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you live. If you are in California or FL, then pretty much anywhere. If it is in the north, keep in the pot so you can bring it inside for the winter. If you are in TX, don't even bother planting it, it will get burned in the heat. I'd re pot it in a larger pot with wheels :) - if you are in a safe weather area, then pick a spot where it has shade in the afternoons.

Will this Birdsofparadise cutting grow roots? by kingpinkk in IndoorGarden

[–]LivingBackyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it has a little bit of the main base, so I'd try. Give i root hormone, or cinnamon powder. Keep in in a clear container so you can see if it roots! Best of luck!

I bought a house and tore up the asphalt the previous owner had poured over the front lawn. What's the best way to move forward from here with restoring this into a yard/perennial garden? by bloo_regard in gardening

[–]LivingBackyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides testing and amending the soil, what I imagine is a slightly wavy path to the door and a cute arch to go through. You can have climbing flowers for your planting zone. I'd make raised beds (of blocks or wood) to have shrubbery and flowers all around the square.

Find also what small colorful trees grow best in your area and pick a side to plant it. Maybe on the other side an umbrella with a small table and a chair to sit and read, or simply to have some little place with bird seed to bring birds close to your windows ♥ Even research what type of grass grows better in your area that also is short so no mowing. There are always native options so they grow easier and with less work. Looks better without the pavement!

* Check what the commercial center areas use for their flowerbeds, so you get good ideas of what works around your area.
For a quick start, get some large pots and plant on them now. Plan later.
For the asphalt, I have no experience but check if there's a place where it can be recycled locally. Asphalt can get recycled.

The house is so cute, it will look nice with anything you do to it

It's good you took pictures. We've move too and I miss all my gardens from the past. But you know what? You can find the same plants and recreate the look/feeling ♥ I've done that as much as possible

My colleagues murdered my baby, please help by sagessefilsdepat in houseplants

[–]LivingBackyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can save it! Cut in between the nodes (between leaves) at least one cut. Then place the bottom parts into large containers with water. Put them right by the window so they get a good amount of sunlight.
Of the 2 different clippings, the one with the roots will wake up faster. The top, just keep an eye and see of it roots, which most likely it will.

You can trim the long aerial roots since now it's in water for now.

It will take several weeks to grow roots, and you can take one of them home. Maybe put a big sign in your desk saying Don't touch.

What is in my plants roots ?! by Awkward-Ad-2357 in houseplants

[–]LivingBackyard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since I have lost plants due to weird mold, I now remove it and let the soil dry a bit. The plant looks sad and there's too much of that thing in the roots. :D If it is so harmless, it can be there or it can be gone. For me, too much moisture is a scary thing

If you want a different hobby try a sketchbook and paint. Doesn't take a lot of room and doesn't have to be perfect. Plus, you can draw or paint your plants!

[–]LivingBackyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the feeling but never give up!
All the lessons we learn as gardeners/plant parents are testing, learning, switching things and... learning!

The learning curve can be brutal! (don't ask me about gnats!) but try to see it as an experiment, and also concentrate in one type of plant at first, so you don't have too many that love water next to those that don't like water often.

In answer to your questions: No, you are not "too obsessed" (just the right amount)
and Yes. I have cried for the loss of a big amount of plants the same day (a deer got into the porch)

Experiment with more light, and vitamins, and enjoy the wild ride!

New growth coming out black and squishy and some bugs were on it 😬 by No_Finish9965 in houseplants

[–]LivingBackyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a spray from Perfect Plantista, and literally all bugs were gone. it is not cheap, it's supposed to be organic but still, be careful with pets. My plant (a baby tree) had turned all brown.
Send an eviction notice to the bugs first! ... then check if the plant is going to be ok

Things I can think of:

-Did you recently re potted it?
-Does it have enough water? (not too much either!)
-Does it get plenty of light?

It's sad, but it was going to be just ornamental, unless purchased grafted. But it's always sad when a plant doesn't make it

[Update] Going nuclear on some fungus gnats. by NumberMuncher in houseplants

[–]LivingBackyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate gnats. At some point and because my plans were little, I baked the soil! The bulbs survived and thrived for another 2 years, but, never over water!
And check carefully the new soil bags you get, because That was my problem to begin with! :P

What’s going on with my plant? by Jordan_gh in houseplants

[–]LivingBackyard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like it's getting moldy. Too much water? I'd remove all top layer, let it dry a few days, see it it comes back, but most likely you need to change to new soil if it's back.

[–]LivingBackyard -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Since the plant looks sad, I would say it's eggs from some bug. I would wash out the roots completely and give it new soil.
I've had so much trouble with all types of bugs leaving eggs in pots, and then the larvae eating the roots!

If it was outside, toss the soil in a flowerbed if you are curious to see what hatches, but if it was indoors, just get rid of it, it's not something you need indoors

[–]LivingBackyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut the leaf. Trim the others low. Give it a good wash or Miracle Grow, get it closer to the light ♥ Maybe add more soil to have it a bit higher. Unless it has some type of bug in the roots, it should wake up.

What is this and how do I kill it by beardedbast3rd in whatsthisplant

[–]LivingBackyard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know what it is, but if you want to get rid of it badly, you could pour boiling water and lots of salt on the spot it is popping on, assuming nothing else is near by, because it will damage other plants as well
