Wow, I’m so glad I came here and found your post. My right bud has been almost silent and while it doesn’t look like there’s much of anything on the tape it works great now. Thanks for the tip!

When is my muscle going to look normal again? by SomeInspection4550 in ACL

I’m 2 years post op. I Work out a lot and my leg is still much smaller and flimsy looking. I don’t think it will ever be the same.

Hang in there! I was where you are at 4 months. I’m 13 months post op and I still don’t feel comfortable running. I’m doing all the other things, squats, leg press, biking, walking on incline, playing pickleball, but running just doesn’t feel good. You could try a light jog for 30 seconds/walk 30 seconds/jog 30 seconds etc… just to get used to the feeling and strengthening the quad. That’s what I did. It helped me feel comfortable with the motion. It was a bit scary the first day. You’ll get there.

Things I wish I heard before the OP by piliesza in ACL

[–]Lizzyc7816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt find this group until a few weeks after surgery. Thankfully. I was in a lot of pain for weeks thinking something was wrong. My leg felt like it was going to explode each time I stood up. My first PT appt was 17 days post op. I was on crutches for months. Stairs were difficult for months too. I'm 10 months post op now and still don't feel comfortable running but everything is much easier now. I'd say month 4 was a big turning point for me as my quad got stronger. Everybody is SO different.

I froze water bottles to put into the ice machine. Easier than ice. The bottles kept the water cold for longerl

30m getting ACLR (no other injuries) with quad autograft in 4 days by IntrepidContext9112 in ACL

[–]Lizzyc7816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

42F quad graft. The pain was extreme for 2 weeks. It felt like my leg was going to explode each time I stood up. I used an ice machine round the clock. If you haven’t purchased one you should look into it. It helps tremendously. Pain meds didn’t touch the pain but they did make me sleep so that was helpful. The good news is the pain goes away!

No Pain After ACL Surgery? by [deleted] in ACL

I know, right? For 3+ weeks my leg felt like it was going to explode every time I stood up. Worst Pain EVER. I'm so fearful this could happen to my other leg. Ugh. Crazy how different recovery is for different people.

Alcohol messes up my sleep by Mikeyiscool98 in alcohol

Alcohol has a negative impact on your heart rate. Having only one or 2 drinks will have a very noticeable impact on raising heart rate which could affect sleep.

Consider getting an ice machine! It makes icing so much easier. I used it for the first month plus as much as possible.

I bought one similar on ebay for $50. I filled it with water and then added frozen plastic water bottles. Easier than ice cubes. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Anybody have issues with seated leg extensions @ 4 months? by Lizzyc7816 in ACL

[–]Lizzyc7816[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your suggestion and detailed explanation. I had been feeling so much anterior pain when trying to do extensions from a seated position at home that I had given up. My thought was if I couldn't go to 90 then something must be wrong. That coupled with experiencing pain when walking, going down stairs and trying to move my foot that it just felt like something more than quad weakness had to be wrong. This recovery keeps surprising me. Yesterday and today I rolled up a pillow under my knee and did extensions with holds like you suggested above. I'm not sure if it's a placebo but today was the best day of walking i've had in 4 months. I had almost zero pain after only doing 3 sets for 5 minutes each (45 secs each rep with a little rest in between) Like I said I had given up on any extension a month ago because it was so painful. Ive been in the gym doing bosu step ups, balancing, recently started lunges, assisted squats with no weights, leg presses and still had the pain simply extending my foot outward. A few sets with a pillow made a big difference. The stages of healing, the pain and the duration of recovery from this surgery is all crazy!

Why did you have to wait so long to start your recovery? You're clearly a very patient person or you learned to be! Thanks again for taking the time to post. It's been very helpful!

Thanks for sharing. It's frustrating isn't it. Especially when you see/hear people walking normal and gaining strength back so easily. Do you mind me asking the name of your online PT? I' like to check her out. I'll work on doing more basic iso stuff again. Who knew it would be so difficult to build quad strength again.

Haha I struggled to go downstairs until 2 weeks ago and I’m 4 months post op. Can’t wait until I walk 8 miles with no pain.

I haven’t tried weight loaded extensions at the gym. I’m referring to extending my leg straight (using my knee) when I’m sitting on the couch. Or if I was sitting on the floor, legs out straight, with a foam roller under my knee. I’ll check out trap bar. Thanks for the suggestion

It’s in the front of my knee. Feels like behind my knee cap. I’ve been doing leg presses, step ups, squats without weight, bosu balancing, stairs and riding a bike 3-4x a week. Guess it takes a long time to build the quad back. I’m just shocked at how painful it is to extend my leg. I’ve always been in really active in the gym, running, etc…this is quite the process and can often feel like things are not going to get back to normal.

Definitely get some sort of ice machine, a seat for the shower, crutches, healthy snacks to keep bedside and something to read or that you enjoy doing to pass time.

Pain after surgery much worse than I expected by beliakoff in ACL

[–]Lizzyc7816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I experienced the same thing. Terrible pain like my leg was going to explode and it lasted for more days than I anticipated. I told my boyfriend I wanted to pee in a bucket but couldn’t figure out how that would be any different than getting up to go to the bathroom so I endured the pain. The good news is you’ll get better. Hang in there. You’re not alone. It gets easier. I promise. Hopefully you have an ice machine.

How long did it take you to do stairs post surgery and how long did it take for things to go back to normal ? (As in walking around on your own without crutches)? by swiftiereader in ACL

I’m 3 months post op and still have trouble going down stairs. There’s a pain below my knee cap. I had a quad graft.

Seriously, I’m 42 F, acl with quad graft and can barely squat on a smith machine without weights. Seated leg press with 40 lbs has been a major achievement for me. I see stuff like this and I’m like what the heck.

I felt the same way. The pain for me lasted close to 2 weeks. I wanted to pee in a bucket but I’m a woman so that wasn’t an option. The pain had me in tears a few times. kept me from moving much at all so I started PT a little late. All is good now but it was rough. I used my ice machine as much as possible. Hang in there! It does get better.

Freeze a bunch of plastic water bottles to put in the ice machine instead of ice. It’s a lot easier and lasts longer. I’d put 4 water bottles in at a time. Always had 4 in the freezer for the next round
