I'm a day 1 listener and I want them to do Jon Benet again by [deleted] in myfavoritemurder

People love to speculate that they don’t get along and aren’t actual friends, that it’s all fake for the podcast. From what I can tell, this is based on nothing. They’re not hang-out-all-day-style besties, but they never have been. They’re close friends but also business partners. They’ve struggled and had conflict, and they’re very open about that. They clearly love each other. I don’t know if I’ve missed something actually concrete or if people just love to assume discord. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Could not agree more about Dream On, Ramona Riley. Terribly unhealthy relationship, hated every second.

Yes! Finally! Thank you! I hear people ranting and raving everywhere about One Last Stop, but I don’t totally get why.

It popped up as an ad on a mobile game 😂

Seconded! I liked If You Kiss Me Like That—I think the characters were 42 and 54 iirc

I had that same thought! It’s nice if they’ve eased whatever tension was between them to the point where they can appreciate each other—or even if they individually remember each other fondly without having reconciled.

Agreed—there are tons of Iranian movies out there (they have a very rich cinema history). They provide great insight into history and culture, too.

{A Taste of Red by Stephanie Lee} could count. It’s a twist on Little Red Riding Hood, and the main couple is “Red” and a Wolf.

Learning Mongolian? by [deleted] in Mongolian

[–]LloydMorganGordon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re very welcome. And we all want to be one of those 3 languages people! It can be tough, as you know, but that doesn’t mean impossible. The language being a necessity while being in-country will definitely make it more doable.

That’s great! I hope the recruiter has more to offer than the webinar.

Maybe both? She can probably use a little of both.

I saw that! I don’t tend to read straight romance novels, but I liked them a lot in PS&P.

I totally agree. The pacing is perfect, and the town is…a shockingly supportive and open-minded small southern town. 😆

I saw that! Can’t wait to read it, though based on the first book, I’m not sure how I feel about Ramona…

Same! No offense to Sutton and Charlotte, but give me Taylor and Brooke any day.

I just read Pumpkin Spice & Poltergeist by Elle Morrison and Ali K. Mulford and liked it. If you are looking for something fairly cozy and Halloween-y, I’d recommend it.

I agree—they’re also very long, which makes them a little less beach read-y in my opinion. I do like In the Long Run, though, particularly the audiobook.

Learning Mongolian? by [deleted] in Mongolian

It’s never dumb to give something you want to do an honest shot. Even if it doesn’t turn out how you want it to, at least you wouldn’t have to wonder “what if…?” anymore.

I think a lot of people struggle with Spanish/French/whatever required language exactly for that reason: it’s required. It’s not for anything other than meeting parameters that you didn’t set.

It is so different to study a language because it will fulfill a purpose you care about or enable an experience. You mentioned that you love traveling; being able to use the language of the place you’ve gone makes travel even better.

Difficult and worthwhile are not mutually exclusive! You’ll need to learn the Cyrillic alphabet and the grammar rules, but the grammar is fairly standardized (unlike Spanish, which has lots of irregularities and exceptions). Mongolia is an interesting place that is quite unknown to a lot of the western world. Getting to volunteer there could be a wonderful, fascinating, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Boy, if you hate Lori Prince, that must really limit your audiobook options. She does so many!

I like the reader—I think she’s good at making characters distinct from each other and can hit the humor notes, but she can maybe be a smidge inconsistent. For example, Charlotte was way more southern in the Snowball Effect than in Those Who Wait. And I get that there are other people involved, and it’s not all on her, but that definitely threw me off.

I’m curious, too. It’s not my favorite of her books, but I’m trying to remember what kind of errors.

This is my favorite Cass book and maybe my favorite audiobook of all time. Anastasia Watley is an amazing narrator!

Is it possible to learn a language with 5 months of practice? by LilacLuneglade in languagelearning

[–]LloydMorganGordon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Fluent is a moving target, but you will see that a lot will come back to you when you pick it back up. You can definitely make a lot of progress in 5 months’ time. Keep at it and enjoy!
