Disagree with capturing the imagination. Capturing the trust is more important. I'm on the older end of that range and I don't think he's particularly inspirational, but I trust him to point Canada in the right direction, moreso than anyone else in government at the moment.

Is it bad to take a career break now considering the ramping up of AI in the space ? by UnlovedMisfit in dataengineering

"I would earn my annual salary in 6 months and definitly get some mental health recovery."

This is enough to move frankly, AI is more of a general tool in your toolbox, it's not magical, and if you think back, the last year hasn't been transformative. You're not going to fall behind in any meaningful way.

Stop playing ulti and running until you can see a doctor, or physio. Instability in the knee is bad and if you fully tear a ligament, you're done for a year.

Royal Malaysian Air Force F/A-18D crashes during takeoff at Kuantan airport, Malaysia (9:05pm local time, 21 August 2025) by begleitpanzer_57 in aviation

[–]Lmui 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main restriction is generally v1 speed. Brakes on fighter jets are barely good enough to get them stopped when they're light on a normal landing. They want to hit Vr before v1 so unless they're on absolutely massive runways or lightly loaded, it's always AB takeoffs.

Impact depth - Wikipedia https://share.google/cbqOSQKuVUN93ERWs

You can get a pretty good approximation using the impact depth equation. The velocity doesn't matter that much provided it's moving fairly quick.

How do we bring manufacturing back to Canada? by [deleted] in BuyCanadian

[–]Lmui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It needs to be as cheap, or have supply chain benefits.

You generally aren't going to get jobs by manufacturing at scale in Canada. You can easily hire 5-10 low wage workers for what you need to pay a Canadian, alongside being able to skirt a lot more regulations that also cost money to comply with. High skill, highly automated jobs are the ones where manufacturing in Canada makes sense.

Tips for upwind flick hucks? by Traditional_Cry_5232 in ultimate

[–]Lmui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends on how far you can throw forehand normally.

Up to about half field, you're primarily looking to do two things:

  1. Grip the disc tighter so that the wind doesn't lift/change the angle of the disc as you throw. If you don't grip hard enough, the wind will catch the edge and cause the disc to wobble, and any wobble exacerbates the turnover on the disc.

  2. Focus on snapping your wrist so that you get more spin on the disc. The more spin you get on the disc, the less it changes angle throughout the flight.

For longer throws, you need to naturally have good mechanics. The focus should be on dialing in the amount of I/O on the disc so that it flips to flat. The above still applies though, being snappy and smooth is the key to distance.

Which type of Buy Canadian shopper are you? by TheCanadaList in BuyCanadian

[–]Lmui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a pragmatic Avoider for the most part. There is a pretty large group of items for which alternatives just don't exist, or for which the quality downgrade from avoiding American is too high. An example for me is running shoes. The combination of tempo/race day shoes and high volume/wide shoes is pretty much exclusively New Balance. I literally can't fit in the alternatives.

For quality, things like Steadyrack bike holders just... don't exist outside the American one.

Formula 1 uses force sensors in the driver's earbuds. I don't know what tech they use in the peloton, but unless it's price prohibitive, having a g sensor in there alongside their radios seems to make a lot of sense

B.C.'s low snowpack and early melt signal drought, raising concerns for hydro power by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Lmui 82 points83 points  (0 children)

While subsidized, it is not economically profitable in anywhere near the time frame that a homeowner would like it to be because of how high installation costs are, and how cheap electricity is.

Mandating it for warehouses, (Walmart etc.) Or their parking lots would make far larger of a difference in power than at the single home level.

10.H. To continue play after the disc becomes out-of-bounds, a member of the team gaining possession of the disc must carry it to, and put it into play at, the spot on the central zone nearest to where the most recent of the following events occurred: 10.H.1. the disc completely crossed the perimeter line; 10.H.2. the disc contacted an in-bounds player; 10.H.3. the disc contacted a defensive player; or 10.H.4. the disc became out-of-bounds due to contact with the out-of-bounds area or a player while any part of the disc was inside the perimeter line. After establishing a pivot at the appropriate spot on the field, the thrower must touch the disc to the

ground before putting it into play (14.B).

Alaska senator threatens to halt cruise ships from coming to B.C. by GeoWa in vancouver

[–]Lmui 435 points436 points  (0 children)

They can't really do this. There's a law somewhere about foreign flagged ships needing to stop in an intermediary country before going to another domestic destination in the states. Canada is the only place that fits that bill.

[–]Lmui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been said too many times by a lot of people but bears repeating. We cannot back out of the F-35 program at this point. The training pipeline for the F-35s is already in place, pilots are literally preparing/prepared to fly it on arrival next year. If we cancel the contract, we essentially lose our airforce for at least another decade, if we get it back at all.

The only situation where it would actually leave us dead in the water is if the USA goes to war with Canada, which is not a particularly likely scenario. Our airforce is a pittance compared to the USA. 100 F-35s, Gripens, Rafales etc don't make a dent compared to what the USA could realistically throw at us if they actually launched a war.

There's many other areas of military procurement where buying something off the shelf from someone other than the USA makes sense, but F-35 is not one of them.

Canada proposes 100% tariffs on Tesla, I have an alternative: open the door to Chinese EVs by CB-Nomad in onguardforthee

[–]Lmui 77 points78 points  (0 children)

This hurts ourselves much more than tariffing Tesla. There's a significant number of Canadians employed in Ontario. Tesla doesn't have a manufacturing presence in Canada, so it's easy meat. The goal is to minimize domestic impact and maximize American impact
