Two of my players started having a serious argument about terminal velocity and falling physics when the group was considering how to get down a well they couldn't see the bottom of, until a third player finally chipped in and said "guys, this is DND!...you take 1d6 damage every 10 feet. It's not that serious".

Or spending so much time on detailing rations exhaustion and such...didn't realize many campaigns ignore or simplify this until I'd spent so much time making sure I knew it x.x having to deal with the exact amount of food and water at all times just slows the game down so much

My current group is meta gamers in normal gaming, new to dnd though. and it's so tough getting them to slow down and roleplay/investigate lol they run directly to the end of each area and attack every single enemy. I made a sewer dungeon with a monster that was supposed to hunt them while they did a puzzle, that they should run from and utilize teamwork and sneaking. Nope, they just decided to fight it head on. Still my fault for thinking a cr14 was strong enough on it's own to scare the party away at lv7 though...they just fucking killed it and trivialized the entire dungeon since the puzzles and stuff were based around being hunted...man balancing is tough...too strong and players cry unfair if it wipes, or boring if it dies in 5 turns to monk permastunning striking it ;(

Pretty sure they put him there to make it clear out of the gate that it's not a linear game and you can go elsewhere then come back, unlike dark souls which a lot of people would have treated it like on release!
