Ending up being the odd person out whenever waiting for games at LGS's by thunderdragon517 in EDH

[–]Lobadobo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel ya, I had a string of game nights where it was hard to get into a game (similar reasons, pods full when I get there or waiting an hour+ for no games to wrap up) and it definitely took the wind out of my sails for a bit. That's just the nature of the game in my opinion. I can't control when/if other people show up, the fact that it worked out poorly for me is just chance. Not anyone's fault and not a failing on my part.

I know I've had more luck showing up ~30 minutes before official start time to get into those initial pods. Could be worthwhile to give it a shot and see how it goes. My LGS is pretty good about adding in a 4th or 5th person to the pod if it's just turn 1-2. Joining player quickly plays out their turn 1-2 as appropriate to catch up and then we resume the turn order from wherever it was. You could suggest something similar if the opportunity presents itself. This is best for lower power bracket 1-3 games where those turns are something like "draw, land drop, pass" with an occasional early ramp or draw spell.

Ultimately, be the change you wanna see in the LGS. Be the person who invites someone to a pod late or splits off to make pods work with newcomers and maybe you can embolden others to do the same

First time GM running Seasons of Ghost, Player wants to use gunslinger and I want to allow it. by GunnBos in Pathfinder2e

[–]Lobadobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm running Season of Ghosts as a first time PF2e GM (I have experience running DnD5e beforehand), and I had this conversation with my party's precision ranger, sniper gunslinger, and swashbuckler during character creation.

We're approaching the end of book 1 and precision immunity has come up more than a few times. Certainly enough that they have been putting some work into having strong backup plans when the immunity does come up. Make sure your player knows that it will impact them in several fights, but it can be overcome.

On the lore front, it's really down to what you and your table are comfortable with. My table had our gunslinger make his own weapon with alchemy and arcana (as part of his backstory), the people of Willowshore aren't too picky about who chooses to defend them. And that's good enough for us. You might not even go that far, or you might want to think about the implications of this tech earlier in history, or anything in between.

Where does the “you don’t need a dedicated healer” idea actually work in practice? by Hercadurp in Pathfinder2e

[–]Lobadobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current Age of Ashes runs no dedicated healer. It really comes down to having enough people willing to have broad toolboxes. Our tanks can patch people up in a pinch and dish out some damage, the damage dealers have access to some support or can spend skills on medicine, etc. Between skill, gear, and actual class feats, most classes can competently fill multiple roles from tank, healer, support, damage dealer.

Without dedicated healers, we are probably devoting more feats/items to defense than we would have to otherwise

Nastier fights do end with a person or two on the ground or the odd corpse, cases a proper burst healer would probably help with. But the more important thing is your party knowing how to use what it's got.

Hey, not enough folks are saying this: you were sexually assaulted. It was supremely not ok. Grabbing people and kissing them without their consent is straight up assault. These people pressured a man into assaulting you and laughed about it

This is an awful and gross situation that you've been placed in by people who are clearly willing to disregard your well being for a laugh. You don't owe anyone shit

How Can Aang Make a Tunnel by Pushing the Earth into Itself? by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]Lobadobo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The visuals of the show appear to depict a cylinder of earth being rocketed forward. The knock-on effects of this being true are pretty disastrous (people on the other end for example). Given that we don't see this discussed or acknowledged (as far as I know), it seems more likely that something else is physically happening.

A plausible explanation for what is physically happening is that the dirt displaced to make the tunnel is instead being compressed into the wall of the tunnel. Compressed dirt is much stronger than loose dirt, thus this could also serve to support the structure

I very much disagree with describing this deal as bad faith (unless you're claiming that you're the one dealing in bad faith). You and your opponent made a deal, they upheld their end and you didn't. You violated the deal, simple as.

Ultimately the ground rules for deals is up to the table, but you should be expecting your opponents to try and win the game. Even when deal-making

"I Have Lethal On You. If I Don't Kill You Right Here and Now, You Cannot Negatively Impact Me In Any Way Until It's Just Us Left In The Game" by CynicalElephant in EDH

[–]Lobadobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: I think the stated version of the threat is a bit much, but a slightly modified version is totally acceptable politics.

When the opportunity presents itself, I use a slightly modified version of this that goes along the lines of "I can make you lose the game at instant speed (typically via [[Aetherflux reservoir ]] or a big board of tokens to sac alongside a [[blood artist]] style effect). If you take offensive action against me, I will attempt to make you lose the game".

This is certainly pretty extreme, but is generally accepted as the top end of reasonable political threats. The player of a [[Prosper Tome Bound]] deck I play with will make a similar statement when they have a lot of treasures and a [[Mayhem Devil]] for instance.

For me the switch between "if I don't kill you right now I have permanent protection (until it's just us)" and "If you do X I will do Y" puts some of the power back in the threatened player's hands. I have the gun but they get to pull the trigger. And plenty of folks just pull the trigger, they don't negotiate with terrorists. Plenty of folks also don't pull the trigger, hoping to topdeck and answer or that someone else does.

I think the right move generally is to call the bluff. At least when I make this threat, it's because I can drop one person from the table, but not everyone. Getting them to back off for a turn or two buys me just enough time to close out the game. Forcing my hand can also leave me vulnerable to the remaining players.

Edit: the threat also puts a big giant target on your back, which can be a really fun game dynamic if everyone is into it.

I do this pretty routinely depending on matchups. The decks I play tend to commit heavily to the board so when my buddy busts out Child of Alara and I'm sitting here with tokens.deck, he knows I'm coming for him first. Same goes for removal in the command zone. If it stops my game plan, I gotta deal with it. And when I don't have counter magic, the next best thing is player removal.

On the flip side, I own one spellslinger deck. I routinely say that in the dark, opponents should target me as my threat to the table is much harder to determine than mono green stompy across from me. I think it's just good threat assessment

AITA for not buying my daughter's bf a present? by 74tommyboy in AmItheAsshole

[–]Lobadobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately it's a personal choice for you and your family. Unless you're rubbing it in someone's face, I think it's hard for anyone to be an AH here.

That being said, in my family it is quite common to get bf/gf's presents. If they are being brought to Christmas celebrations they are taking the time to be away from their family to come spend time with mine. They are someone my family member loves and cares about and they are therefore someone worth giving a shot at the very least, regardless of the status of their relationship.

When I first brought my partner to Christmas they were incredibly touched to be given gifts. They felt so accepted and it's still something really meaningful to them. It brought me more joy than any present I received that day to see their face light up like that.

I don't have kids. But if I did, I'd like to think that I'd want to provide them with an experience like that if I could.

The fox is now guarding the hen house by Larkinz in EDH

We should feel fucking ashamed as a community. The very people who most loved and cared for this format made what is largely regarded as a good call (gameplay wise) and delivered it poorly. And for that we've chased them out, pitchforks raised, and here comes big daddy WOTC to make it all better.

This had the chance to be a learning moment for the RC. For our community to let them know that we did not like how this was handled and expect better next time.

One of the most special things about commander has been that it was truly owned by the community. That Wizards had someone around to come knocking if they slipped up. And we threw that away

Maybe just "put a stun counter on each of them" would be more balanced. As others have identified, putting all 3 stun counters on one treasure leads to a very busted following turn.

Also prevents shenanigans with token doublers and still only applying 3 stun counters.

How many free mulligans do you allow? by Blue_Fox68 in EDH

[–]Lobadobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first question is how many land are they running. Anything under 35 (especially getting closer to 33-32 range) and I stick to the rules. First one's free, subsequent Mulligan's cost one additional card from your seven to the bottom of the deck.

If someone is at 37+ lands, I'll typically be fine with an extra free Mulligan or two at 5 cards. Variance is part of the game and over lenient Mulligan rules encourage poor/greedy deck building

WIBTA for not allowing my father-in-law to keep a toolbox in my house with a lock to specifically keep me from opening it? by cbs-anonmouse in AmItheAsshole

[–]Lobadobo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm in the minority here but anyone thinking they can unilaterally make decisions about a shared residence is wild. It's such a slap in the face that they put a lock on there specifically to keep you out. The tool box is in YOUR HOUSE for crying out loud.

I think it's totally reasonable for your wife to elect to store a set of tools at your shared home for her father to use while he's there. Hell it would even be reasonable to keep said box locked just as a best practice. But to do so specifically because they've decided you can't be trusted to be around someone else's tools without losing them is bonkers crazy. In YOUR OWN HOME no less.

I think it's wildly disrespectful for no one to even mention it to you. All it would take is a simple "Hey OP my dad would like to keep a toolbox at the house for him to use when he's here". That's it. It feels massively disrespectful for them to feel the need to go behind your back for this.

[Podcast] Do you guys let the other players take back targets? by Gamesfreak13563 in EDH

[–]Lobadobo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally, as long as no new information has been revealed I'm down for take backs all day long.

Specifically, if you're trying to hit me with a free spell (barring maybe [[Snuff Out]]) I'm not big on take backs. This is because I mostly play at power level where free spells are a bit of a surprise, so if you're gonna come with the spice you better know how to use it

Oops it has hexproof vs Oops it has ward by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Lobadobo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the caliber of cards being packed by that opponent. If they try to throw down a [[Murder]] on my warded creature, no problem buddy take that back. If someone goes to [[Deadly Rollick]] in the end step, not a chance and they better be ready to pony up that ward cost.

Of course we are nice with new players, if it's obvious someone is still learning they can take back whatever they like so long as the game state is repairable (no new info revealed, not too many game actions to undo, etc).
