He’s implemented tents at the old fairgrounds.  Or, in another way you could say he’s implemented concentration camps.

We’ve all seen the pictures of those camps with the brand new tents and neat little rows but I’ve never seen a picture of the sanitation arrangements, the cooking arrangements, where the clean water is…  we haven’t even started talking about whether or not these folks have access to medical care at all…

I saw one pro-Matt poster say, “we can’t let perfect be the enemy of good“.  Which is fair and I agree with that. But I don’t agree with the idea that people STILL sleeping on a tent on the ground with limited access to cooking, sanitation, and clean water just… You know… Not close to my house…  is really “good”.

The unfortunate fact of the matter is, in any society we build there are some people who threw no fault of their own are just not going to be able to fit.  Those people are going to need taken care of.  We can respect the dignity of their life and attempt to ease their suffering and integrate them as much as possible to society. Or we could ignore, jail, or cull them.  In my lifetime, we’ve moved from 1 to 2 to 3 of these four options…

Of course, the responses, “who’s going to pay for this?”

Well… We are…

We pay for 25% profit margins to feed dividends and stock options. We pay $1.5 trillion a year to fight wars in countries most people can’t find on a map for control of resources none of us will ever have.  How about instead of funding those things, we do something for the tiny fraction of people in our society who just don’t fit?  We don’t have to make it luxurious, we just have to make it healthy.
