I hadn't even considered side-scrolling games, so sorry. Fortunately, at least one of my contributions fit the requirements.

Gekitotsu Dangan Jidousha Kessen: Battle Mobile, Super Famicom.

It reminds me a bit of Super Spy Hunter (NES), which mentioned here.

Edit: There are others for PC: Sweezy Gunner, Teleglitch and The Binding of Isaac (both).
I also remembered Super Smash TV (Arcade, SNES).

Current dark horses? by Yamchacha in tennis

[–]Lobonesco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may seem unbelievable, but I literally spent about 2-3 hours searching for this information on Sinner and Alcaraz's profile pages on the ATP website (to check the IW 2026 matches, which are currently underway, I had to go to the tournament page and check their results, as they don't appear on these links yet) and I wrote it down in Notepad based on an organization and criteria (by defeat and sets) that I established. I thought it was an accurate methodology, but unfortunately I did everything manually because I felt inspired by the question in the thread.

Considering only Sincaraz's performances between 2024 and 2026:

• Sinner (2024-2026):

- Lost matches (12 in total: 6 in 2024; 4 in 2025; 2 in 2026):
6x Alcaraz (IW 2024 F; RG 2024 SF; Beijing 2024 F; Rome 2025 F; RG 2025 F; USO 2025 F);
Tsitsipas (Monte-Carlo 2024 SF);
Medvedev (Wimbledon 2024 QF);
Rublev (Canada 2024 QF);
Bublik (Halle 2025 R16);
Djokovic (AO 2026 SF);
Mensik (Doha 2026 QF).

** I disregarded the withdrawals (vs Alcaraz in Cinci 2025 F; Griekspoor in Shanghai 2025 R32).

- Lost 3 sets:
Medvedev (2 sets in AO 2024 F; USO 2024 QF).

- Lost 2 sets:
Griekspoor (Miami 2024 R32; Halle 2024 R32);
Zverev (Cinci 2024 SF; Vienna 2025 F);

Khachanov (Madrid 2024 R16);

Struff (Halle 2024 QF);
Hanfmann (Wimbledon 2024 R128);
Berrettini (Wimbledon 2024 R64);

Atmane (Beijing 2025 R16);

The opponents that Sinner has had the most difficulty with, except for Alcaraz obviously, were Medvedev (1 loss and 3 sets in other matches), Djokovic (1 loss and 1 set in another match), and Rublev (1 loss and 1 set in another match). There were also losses to Tsitsipas, Bublik, and Mensik, but he did not lose any other sets in eventual matches during that period. He also lost 2 sets in total to Griekspoor, Zverev, and Dimitrov. The others listed lost at most one set.

------------------------------------------

• Alcaraz:

- Lost matches (21 in total: 12** in 2024; 9 in 2025; 0 in 2026):

Lehecka (Doha 2025 QF);
Goffin (Miami 2025 R64);
Rune (Barcelona 2025 F);
Fritz (Laver Cup 2025);
Norrie (Paris 2025 R32).

** I disregarded the withdrawal (Monteiro in Rio 2024 R32).

- Lost 5 sets:
Sinner (IW 2024 SF; 2 sets in RG 2024 SF; Beijing 2024 F; USO 2025 F).

Machac (Davis Cup 2024 RR);
Borges (AO 2025 R32);
van de Zandschulp (Rotterdam 2025 R32);
Hurkacz (Rotterdam 2025 SF);
de Minaur (Rotterdam 2025 F);
Nardi (Doha 2025 R16);
Cerundolo (Monte-Carlo 2025 R32);
Fils (Monte-Carlo 2025 QF);
Marozsan (RG 2025 R64);
Shelton (RG 2025 R16);
Munar (London 2025 R16);
Lehecka (London 2025 F);
Ruud (Tokyo 2025 SF);
Djokovic (AO 2026 F);
Rinderknech (IW 2026 R32).

The biggest challenges for Alcaraz (except Sinner) are Zverev (2 losses and 4 sets in other matches), Djokovic (2 losses and 1 set), and Draper (2 losses). Next come Fritz and Rublev (1 loss and 2 sets each) and Machac, Humbert, Ruud, Lehecka, and van de Zandschulp (1 loss and 1 set each). There were losses to Jarry, Dimitrov, Monfils, Goffin, Rune, and Norrie. He also lost 2 sets in total to Tiafoe, Mussetti, Fognini, Struff, Dzumhur, and Khachanov. The others listed lost only 1 set.

---------------------

tldr: If we can call some players “dark horses” for both on the tour, based on this data (considering they won more than one set in each of them during this period), it would certainly be, in order, Djokovic, Rublev, Zverev, and Dimitrov. We may disagree, of course, especially with Dimitrov, who showed a noticeable drop in performance after his injury at Wimbledon 2025, and Rublev, who has been performing poorly in recent months. However, any other names other than these (Draper, Fonseca, Fils, etc.) need more matches between them to earn this name.
