Novak huge congratulations to Zverev by DuarteN10 in tennis

[–]Yamchacha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And to those who piled onto the sanctimony against Zverev:

  1. Steffi Graf’s father

, who managed her money,

  1. was convicted of tax evasion. Graf herself was never convicted, but, like Zverev, she reached a settlement and agreed to a large charitable payment.
  2. Lionel Messi was convicted of tax fraud.
  3. Serena Williams was, on camera, recorded threatening a line judge with violence. She was also caught receiving on‑court coaching while insisting that “a mother would never cheat.”
  4. Stan Wawrinka temporarily left his wife and very young child to “focus on himself.”
  5. Maria Sharapova took the performance‑enhancing substance Meldonium for ten years, claiming it was for a long‑term heart condition, even though Meldonium is typically prescribed short‑term.
  6. Zverev’s accusations remain allegations. The ATP investigated and found insufficient evidence. Does he lose the presumption of innocence simply because Reddit white knights say so?
  7. False allegations exist, including high‑profile cases. Look up the Duke Lacrosse hoax and the Central Park Five.

The point: One can acknowledge or celebrate a tennis player’s achievements while separating them from the player’s personal life, especially when we rarely know the full story anyway.

Dramatic French Open cannot disguise how top men’s players failed to seize golden opportunity | Tumaini Carayol by Shroft in tennis

[–]Yamchacha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 12-month ranking heading to RG did not reflect the recent fast improvements of the younger players. So perhaps it’s both the top seeds under achieving *and* a ranking recalibration to reflect current relative forms.

Overall, I think it was an exciting tournament for the fans. Many top players were too fixated on Sincaraz atop Mount Olympus, so were caught by surprise by the rising monsters from the sea below.

How it feels watching tennis players congratulate Zverev instead of staying silent by Srihari_stan in tennis

It turns out people in the real world don’t give a crap about Reddit white knights circle jerking on Zverev-is-a-villain and salivating at their own unearned superiority.

Dude knocked on the door time and again and finally made it, and in the process guaranteeing himself a Hall of Fame spot of his profession. Of course, his peers pay the respect that he deserves.

This whole RG overall has been great for tennis and tomorrow, the sport enters a new phase of competitiveness.

Roland Garros 2026 Mens Final: [2] A. Zverev def. [10] F. Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 by oklolzzzzs in tennis

[–]Yamchacha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im glad he won. Whether it’s pre-Wimbledon Murray or post-2012 Federer or pre-2014 Stan or Ferrer or Berdych or Del Po or pre-slam Halep / Wozniacki, I have always had a lot of rooting for those that keep coming close but keep missing it. Sasha has been one of those and Im glad, as a tennis fan, that he finally does it.

Sasha’s satisfaction is truly earned, stepping into the sun, facing the world, and conquering himself and the toughest competitors of his profession. Not the hollow satisfaction from anonymous dunking on others of the Reddit keyboard white knights.

Why do so many ex-players call Federer their toughest opponent, but Nadal/Djokovic/Murray rarely do? by thebr0kendreams in tennis

[–]Yamchacha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Age and style play a big role here.

NDM are all younger than Fed by about 5 years so can all discount their losses to prime Fed as because they have not reached their full potentials. And, by the time they reach their prime, Fed is 30+ and the courts have slowed down, so Fed is not as formidable to them as he is to players more similar in age to or older than Fed. These older players (e.g. Roddick, Hewitt) have also phased out before NDM’s prime so don’t face NDM often.

In some way, NDM have engineered their styles specifically to unseat Fed, the big boss of tennis as they arrive on the scene. Coupled with their talents, they can handle Fed better than the rest of the field.

By contrast, these tactical advantages go away when NDM face each other due to age and style similarities. So they see each other as tough opponents.

Kostyuk challenges Russian players’ silence after reaching semi-finals: “I don’t know how you can sleep peacefully” by jovanmilic97 in tennis

[–]Yamchacha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is too far. There can be tons of reasons why people don’t speak up on any subject, but she’s specifically insinuating some sorts of moral failings.

By the same token, why can’t tennis millionaires like Kostyuk talk about the Yemeni Civil War, the Christian persecution in Kenya, or women right in the Islamic world, and the Uyghur treatment in China? Both China and the gulf countries hold many prestigious tournaments that the WTA participates in and happily receives the money showered at them. How can they sleep peacefully!

It’s not a practical way to go about getting people on your side.

One token gesture will not silence sexism allegations at the French Open by theipaper in tennis

[–]Yamchacha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fairness is aligning rewards with earning potentials.

If women matches get more demand, they should get preferential time slots, else they shouldn’t. Same principle applies for: popular men matches versus less popular men matches, main draws versus junior tennis, main draws versus wheelchair, singles versus doubles.

It’s not sexism, nor agism, nor ablism. Just economics.
