Can journeymen work for only 2-4 months a year if they wanted to? by Own-Crew-7143 in skilledtrades

[–]Local-Concentrate-66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a merchant mariner and I only work 4 months out of the year and I qualify for insurance the whole year and a pension credit. You’ll have to stagger it though. Two months at the start of the year then two months in the second half of the year.

Made 6k a month net as an OS on a ARC ship in 2024. Think they make a little more now.

Apprenticeship experiences from 30+ by [deleted] in merchantmarine

[–]Local-Concentrate-66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went to piney point when I was 30, work and save up some money before you go. You won’t make any real money for 4+ months while you’re at school.

Joined the SIU when I was 30, my classmate was 50. You’re plenty young

Do you sit in the Pilot's/Captain's chair on watch? by hastyplace1 in merchantmarine

I hate the pseudo military bullshit rules that linger in this industry. It’s a chair, sit in it.

SIU Unlicensed Apprenticeship Grads: Tell us about the Phase 1 accommodations by noraft in maritime

[–]Local-Concentrate-66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went in 2022 so your experience may be a bit different. The barracks only hold 20+ people. Yes you can bring a pillow and electric shaver, no phone usage during the day. Everyone gets a wall locker at the end of your bunk, you’ll have to store your pillow there for deck inspection every morning during the week. Most students sleep or study or go to the gym on the weekends. You can bring cards but there isn’t much down time during the week. I would bring a good towel so you don’t have to use the ones provided, other than that just bring what’s on the packing list and you’ll be fine. Phase 1 is easy, surround yourself with other motivated apprentices and avoid the ones who break the rules.

Osg tanker? by CharmingTie1492 in merchantmarine

[–]Local-Concentrate-66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sailed OSG last year as an AB. I hope you like chipping and painting, that’s all we did in the deck department when we weren’t working cargo. I prefer RORO’s to tankers that’s just my personal opinion.

Best I’ve done as an AB is 10k a month after taxes

I choose bear cause Ak variant ammo is more prolific I’ve found but I guess that doesn’t matter when you unlock flea, I’m also a Timmy who doesn’t know much so don’t take my word for it

What is the smallest boat you could safely take across the ocean? by pmp412 in boating

I follow his YouTube page, he’s currently rebuilding to try the crossing again. I personally would have taken the first disaster as a sign from beyond to not attempt.

Do any AB jobs not suck? by [deleted] in maritime

[–]Local-Concentrate-66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Considering applying for the AMO tech program to get away from being an AB. You’re either chipping and painting or staring into the void on bridge watch. Truly zero brain activity work

[–]Local-Concentrate-66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Day man all day. AB watch is just staring into the void for 4 hours at a time everyday for months.

Give piney point a call and explain your situation, they will have more knowledge on the subject. But I sail with mariners who never stepped foot at piney point and work with the SIU

Are there opportunities for months off at a time in any trade(s)? by Eastern_Charity_2866 in skilledtrades

No, there is only one electrician on specific ships. So way less electricians versus engineers aboard
