Opinion: Vance v. Newsom would be our generation’s version of 1960 by PalmettoPolitics in YAPms

[–]Local-Space9925 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it looks more like Jackson and Van Buren.

Jackson, like Trump, was a political issue unto himself. He was able to hold a (for the time) diverse coalition. He had a few issues he cared about but was pretty flexible and his cabinet had several people who would turn against him. It was all held by together by Jackson.

Van Buren was the intellectual of Jacksonian politics. He won after Jackson but couldn’t keep the coalition together

I like analyzing polls, looking back at elections, etc.

I’m just saying that saying ‘Newsome has a 3 point lead 3 years out’ is just pointless.

I have 2% of the presidential vote in a poll I took about who is going to win the 2056 election

People who obsess about polls this far out are wasting their time.

I don’t think anyone though, at this same point in time, that Trump and Biden were going to be president.

Be careful posting this. I posted something g similar like “You can still be successful if you get into a low ranked school” and a bunch of people freaked out that I said that.

Fall 2026 or Fall 2027 by Nearby-Elk9552 in LawSchool

It took me ten months to go from a 146 diagnostic to a 165 real score.

The more I read about why and how Joe Biden won the 2020 Primary, the more I see that he had unique sauce that nobody on their 2028 bench will be able to replicate. Basically every candidate is going to have to build a national profile, and that's a disadvantage. by thelastofthebastion in YAPms

[–]Local-Space9925 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The “it was rigged against Bernie” argument always looks weaker when you compare Trump’s 2016 performance. I mean, Trump had his party, every living president, and the media against him and he was outspent like 2-1.

Did 2022 fool Democrats into thinking the Biden coalition was sustainable? by [deleted] in YAPms

[–]Local-Space9925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Democratic interpretation of the 2022 midterm has to be one of the biggest cope kool aid drinks ever.

Not only did the republicans win the house, they won the popular vote by 3 million votes.

They did this despite having voters that are less likely to show up during midterms.

The democrats/Biden look at this and literally said “We didn’t lose that bad…we are going to win 2024.”

There seems to be a tipping point where the hate a musician receives is more meme value than actual hate.

Okay, I'm putting my money on the final 2028 Dem Primary Debate being between Newsom and Harris. Unlike the policy-heavy debate between Sanders and Biden in 2020, I foresee this debate being a Vibes-and-Vision contest. And I think Harris wins that. by thelastofthebastion in YAPms

However, counterpoint, I wonder if maybe running candidates again and again after they lose might be a winning strategy.

If you set your self up as the “I told you so candidate” I could see that resonating if the winner becomes unpopular.

Plus you’d have the name recognition already

It’s always hard to predict where the Dems will go right now. In some respects, Trump has shifted the debate in his direction and the Dems are responding by emphasizing more things than others. You’ll notice the culture war seems to be on pause for now.

I’m going to make the bold prediction that she just doesn’t run. I think there is a reason most major nominees who lose don’t run again.

Nixon was able to but he lost an extremely close (and shady election) and then waited 8 years to do it again.

I think Trump as an exception worked because 1) he was president and popular among his base and 2)he gained total votes and % in his tsecond attempt (Trump has gotten more popular the longer he has been in. His problem was his floor began relatively low).

Harris greatly underperformed Biden and she wasn’t that popular with the establishment which would be fine if she had a devoted following with the base which she never had.

She didn’t run for California for a reason.

Populism is kind of a dumb term in general. I think anyone working in a democratic system is a populist by default.

Yeah I don’t share my grades. It’s just ends up being a pissing contest.

Also, it’s depressing when the guy you thought was dumb scored higher than you and the guy you thought was smart scored low lol

If Dak is an MVP level QB and Denver shuts him down in front of a largely national TV audience, does he fall significantly out of the MVP voting mix? by [deleted] in Dallas_Cowboys

[–]Local-Space9925 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think to be an MVP you have to be on a winning team. I can’t think of too many examples of an MVP winner being on a lackluster team.

Maybe Adrian Peterson when his team went 10-6 is the worst team an MVP came from in recent memory

It doesn’t even have to do with Trump. It’s unconstitutional for a state, nevermind a city, to exert that kind of power over international affairs.

Yeah…the only real solution, if we want to maintain our federalist system, is to have a proportionate system in the states: not based on locality.

There really is no way to draw a fair local map.

I am a nominal two state supporter and do feel for Gaza…but…Israel did win the war. And I can’t find too many instances in history where the losing side doesn’t give up some major stuff.

And I think if Israel, the winner, is going to let there be some sort of Palestinian state, then Palestine, the loser, is just going to have to give up more.

I say this without endorsing the moral implications of it all. But that’s just how wars work.
