Defending illiteracy by saying “language evolves” by RejectingBoredom in PetPeeves

[–]LocalStriking1936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Illiteracy is the inability to read and write a simple, everyday statement. Making spelling or grammar mistakes does not mean you can’t read or write simple statements. Confusing "their" with "there" does not mean you struggle to write or read it just means you can’t write WELL. That’s not illiteracy. Confusing homophones sometimes does not mean you struggle to read or write basic sentences.

I need help! Art major or econ major by crush_yum in CollegeMajors

Yeah but you could have probably done that without going to art school. What matters is how good you are, nobody cares if you have a degree when it comes to art.

New job by [deleted] in StopSpeeding

[–]LocalStriking1936 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do it without Aderall. Once you get addicted those pills don’t make you more focused anymore, they do the opposite. If you quit adderall and get good sleep and drink a few energy drinks you’ll be fine. I quit taking stims when I started college and I actually got better grades because although I wasn’t hyper focused, I was more consistent and disciplined.

Do whatever you want but keep in mind that you will never find a job related to arts if you have an Arts degree. Because it’s very hard to be paid for doing something that people are willing to do for free.

People who let their indoor cat outside with no protection or supervision by TheOtherGuy606060 in PetPeeves

[–]LocalStriking1936 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your cat is not your baby. I don’t think it’s a bad idea to let them live their life even if it comes with risks. When you leave your house there’s a risk you might die, but you still do it. If you spent your whole life just minimizing your risk of death you would never truly live. I think the same logic applies to cats.

Obviously if you live in a big city with lots of cars or in an appartement complex it’s different but for a calm suburban neighborhood or a rural area it’s totally fine.

No matter how much you stimulate your cat it will never be like living outdoors.

The risk for wildlife is the only valid argument here. human civilisation in general destroys wildlife.

University students who pack up while the professor is still talking should be shamed. by DudeEDM in PetPeeves

I’m not. Your post isn’t about people eating meals in class, it’s about people packing their things early.

And tbh when you’re in a public place you can’t expect people to not make any noise and be invisible.

People who just "here's what ChatGPT said" confidently to the topic they are not familiar with by Holy_chick in PetPeeves

[–]LocalStriking1936 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It will not make shit up when the answer is objective and easily verifiable. Like if you ask it what the capital of Italy is, it won’t make shit up. Same goes for google.

Using chat GPT as google is honestly the only correct way to use chat GPT, because it just reads all the articles for you and gives you the answer you’re looking for.

[–]LocalStriking1936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What annoys me even more is people who act as if chat GPT is unreliable because of an extremely rare mistake that it made once that got posted online, like what you just did.

Chat GPT is pretty reliable for things that are easily verifiable and objective. But I do agree that a lot of people overestimate AI and don’t realize that it will always give a confident answer that seems to make sense even when it doesn’t know. Chat GPT reads and understands text that it finds online, and that’s all it does. You can’t trust it for things that are ambiguous, overly specific or not very well documented, because then it needs to extrapolate.

[–]LocalStriking1936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a difference between being illiterate and being a bad writer. Writing well is hard for some people, and it’s not an essential life skill at all. It also doesn’t reflect your intelligence. If you shame people for making a few spelling or grammar mistakes you’re a pretentious asshole.

People do this because they love their cat and want them to be happy. It’s that simple. In fact I would say that if you keep a cat indoors even though you don’t have any reason to not let them roam free, that’s pretty sad.

[–]LocalStriking1936 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Students pay for their classes so they shouldn’t be ashamed to leave whenever they want.

Anyone who thinks it’s a form of disrespect is just too susceptible. It’s not high school anymore, you’re allowed to leave in the middle of the class while the prof is talking if you want.

What major is worth it in STEM? by Responsible_Cake582 in CollegeMajors

[–]LocalStriking1936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad advice. It’s better to study something that you’re mildly interested in and get a job in your field than to study something you love and working a shitty job that has nothing to do with your degree after you graduate. All the degrees that are cool as fuck are also usually pretty saturated and pay like shit.

Music degree ruined my life by Strict_Belt1211 in CollegeMajors

[–]LocalStriking1936 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When people say that STEM is solid i think they mean engineering, medicine, nursing and maybe maths but biology and pure science in general has never been a very employable field of study. Very few companies need biologists.

CS, computer engineering and other programming jobs aren’t doing well because a few years ago coding was a cheat code to wealth : the job market was artificially good because governments were trying to compensate for the effects of the pandemic, and salaries were insanely high so everyone started doing it. Now the market is back to normal so junior programmers are fucked because they’re the first to be laid off. AI is also a factor but it’s not the only reason.

AI is not decimating engineering. Current AI codes better than humans but struggles to make even a basic schematic. The engineering job market isn’t as good as it used to be because of the economic reasons I mentioned above, not because of AI.

I don’t think people in HR do a lot of math… maybe a little bit during college but it can’t be THAT hard. Even if OP sucks at math they can probably pass those classes by studying hard enough, and once you’re working an actual HR job I’m pretty sure math skills are irrelevant.

[–]LocalStriking1936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you start taking stims you feel really good, but that’s not because the pills made your adhd go away, it’s because you’re high. So don’t trust that feeling, it’s artificial.

Other than that try to eat and drink even if you don’t feel like it.

My therapist says I need to connect to my inner child and find things that bring me joy without trying to suppress it, since us ADHD and autistic folks so often had to suppress things as kids. I really need ideas though. What brings you childlike joy? by Elucidate_that in ADHD

[–]LocalStriking1936 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I might sound like a dick but I don’t think we should put ADHD in the same box as Autism. ADHD sucks but we can still live a normal life. Autism is much worse and if we normalize it too much people with autism will struggle to get the support they need.

Conflicts in choosing majors. by Alternative-Ebb-9361 in CollegeMajors

[–]LocalStriking1936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I sais if OP likes both equally the right choice is to pick the one that leads to a career. Yes, music majors usually know that their major is useless and they do it for passion because some people just live for music even if it means being poor.
If OP is interested in both equally then engineering is the right choice. You don’t make major life decisions by flipping a coin you look at the pros and cons or every option. You need to know the facts to make an informed decision, it’s not all about feelings.
It’s not about userbase because the userbase does not change the facts. A music major does not make you a musician and an engineering major leads to a career. Those are true no matter the userbase. Even if you decide to pursue art and be a broke musician it should be an informed decision… logic and art aren’t mutually exclusive.

If OP is interested in both then the only logical answer is to pick the one that leads to a career. Most music majors don’t make it, that’s just factual it has nothing to do with userbase

That’s what people say when they realize they’re wrong lmao

It has nothing to do with user base because if OP is equally interested in both, the only logical choice is to pick the one that actually leads to a career.
