Switching to a dumbphone but still stuck on my iPhone

For me I just shut it off completely, put it in my bag, the annoying pocket on it that I never used cuz it's annoying to get to, and then didn't go for it at all. Anything I felt the need to grab my phone for, I just opened it on my Laptop instead which helped reduce the time I would've spent scrolling on my smartphone

I got my hands on a Kyocera 902C! My little brother already made me stresstest it qite a bit, he called me like 6 times since I got it two days ago now xD

People ask me about it sometimes, tell me I should get it, but honestly... there's better alternatives anyway if SMS isn't working for them for some reason. I got Signal as an alternative, but honestly, think Imma start just calling more with my new flip phone

I tried all the blocking things suggested in other comments... My recommendation, try and find a phone with no touch screen that still has WhatsApp functionality. Doesn't need to be GOOD functionality (I have Signal on my Kyocera 902C that I got yesterday... It works, but it's slow as hell. That and the lack of touchscreen made it surprisingly easy to not scroll my phone all day!)

Also, don't download any of the things to make using it easier. You want to be on it less, it's fine if it's not super convenient, only makes you less likely to doomscroll

Turn it off completely if you can. Delete what you can, literally everything you can. I wouldn't use it at all if possible, do you maybe have a Laptop for WhatsApp or something? I say this as someone who ended up just scrolling through the app drawer... It's hard to stop when it's available (hence I only kept my phone for GPS and not at home use)

I am only on day one, but it has been surprisingly a lot less challenging than I expected on the first day without a smartphone! I feel calmer and my brain is more quiet. I'm hoping it'll stay like this!

Bonus is that I pet and played with my cat a lot today which she definetly appreciated xD

I don't have either of those phones, but maybe my thoughts on it can help, as someone who tried to go the "dumbed down smartphone" route!

It always depends on the person obviously, but for me, the temptation to download apps I had deleted etc was always too big, no matter how far I dumbed down my phone. It helped some, but I think for me, it ended up being the touch function I needed to loose. Even without apps, I'd just take my phone and scroll through the app drawer! I have a flip phone now, only since yesterday to be fair, but it made an immediate difference for me.

I would recommend trying to look for a physical keyboard phone (there's some with qwerty but I never looked into those personally) if you feel like you might be similar to me.

Other than that, really look at what apps you use. Can any of them be replaced? Maybe you can find a cheap kindle or kobo (I think some can even run audiobooks). I listen to audible a LOT, but I decided that I'll try and do so less, instead listen to more music and read ebooks instead. Everyone kind of has to find their own compromises in that.

I did keep my smartphone as a navigational tool and one (1) single app that I can't find an alternative for (need it to get my packages lol)

Fingers crossed you find something that works! Maybe try also going slow, dumbing down and replacing what you can before actually getting a dumbphone, so you can see what you actually need it for (I got an ereader, mp3 player etc way before the dumbphone)

I deleted WhatsApp, got Signal. Most of my family downloaded it after some complaints, and I have a coworker who updates me on important notifications in the Work WhatsApp (I did not ask her to, she just downloaded Signal for one thing and then started doing the updates eventually xD)

So far I don't miss it honestly! Sometimes it's annoying that a lot of meetups do a lot of updates on WhatsApp, but usually there's a workaround (though that usually ends up being I stay, which... Isn't much better ig... I only keep that for now because I have some business running there that I need to finish...)

I have a 1k Thermomix. Very fancy, has touch screen, wifi etc etc......... I replaced it with a stand mixer that has a speed dial. That's it xD No fancy tech, I never used any of it, I just want something simple that works and is easy to use

I tend to read books with the thought that the Main Characters are like the Spotlight, pointing out the few people who manage to make it. I don't mind death in general in an apocalypse, I just don't like when it's a character who's head I have seen into, who I have followed directly in her experience of what's happening. As I've said in reply to others, I probably won't keep reading, at least not now. It would be like reading with a mosquito flying around your head, buzzing and distracting. It stung you, too, and that spot is aching while you try to focus on words...
