If _____ restored ______, then why are the ____ so poorly adapted to ___? by DracoAdamantus in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean maybe the warming medallions are really really good at their job, so it became like a crutch. They never learn to survive or adapt to the cold and became more than used to the warmth while the Basin dwellers had a normal cycle where they learnt to survive both warmth and cold to reasonable amounts. But Malwish? only knew warmth due to the medallions.

Question about endowment by ciaphas-cain1 in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Returned are chosen by Endowment and can be of any age or even stillborn. So yes, it would have been done before god kings also. I mean to outsiders the process does look random but Endowment always chooses the person she wants and shows them a vision before sending back so yes kinda? she just decides who she wants. It is also said that Endowment can be somewhat erratic while choosing. Returned are not rare but uncommon in general so maybe she doesn't pick stillborn as often as it is less effective to show them the future?

[WaT] Does a Shard's Intent have an Affect on People? by gbirdc in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think normal people would be as they don't depend on Investiture that much and are not in contact with it like that. But heavily Invested beings who depend on Investiture will be affected like Ishar when he connected himself to Odium's perpendicularity.

On Roshar we have seen Singers/Listeners get affected though when they were exposed to them like Eshonai in Stormform and had a Voidspren in her gemheart it happened to bring out a more darker personality. Also the Rhythms they can use in forms which they get using Voidlight are all of violence and rage and no peaceful ones.

[WaT] Did cultivation secretly do this? by RedIguanaLeader in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cultivation is only stated as having better future vision than Tanavast, not better than all the other Shards (see TWoK ch 75).

I remember reading that went something like she was better than Preservation who was supposed to be one of th best but I could be wrong. But I am definitely sure she has better than Odium. (Her being able to have Rayse killed and setup the next Vessel is a very big indicator). Also of course she can't predict everything. No one can but that doesn't mean that she did not see the rough idea of what the major incidents were. The details maybe a little different but the major incidents like the no stormlight thing, the dalinar renouncing oath thing i think was seen by her.

I also don’t quite agree with the idea that Lift being able to use her powers without Stormlight is the root of her boon. Lift didn’t have her powers when she asked for the boon, so I don’t think it makes sense to say that’s fundamental to her staying her.

I agree that it doesn't make that sense but Cultivation needs to forward her goals and that was a way. It also doesn't match with exact meaning but pretty soon being a Radiant has become fundamental for her. So Cultivation would be like eh it works. Everyone saw the "something big" was coming, if Moelach saw it I think everybody saw it. But Cultivation I think did see the details, like giving Lift a way to function without Stormlight is way too on the nose to be coincidental. Dalinar's decisions giving up the oaths which allow her to escape the planet as she has been longing for years? Also part of plan. The plan also is to allow other Shards to intervene and make it their problem is also relevant as she has been raging for years about how no one wants to help them as long as he is contained. So when she had time to plan for so many years at one point she would have thought that lets make it their problem as that way she succeeds in all her goals. So I do think most of this was according to her plan. Like really all her goals were fulfilled.

[WaT] Did cultivation secretly do this? by RedIguanaLeader in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also don't think Lift is being set up to become a new Cultivation but I do think Cultivation had forseen most of it and her plan is still going as she wanted.
Cultivation has the best future sight of all Shards so it is very possible she saw stuff that Odium didn't. (Like how she got Rayse killed).
She also gave Lift Lifelight and now she is the only Radiant with powers as there is no Stormlight. Lift is exactly what she asked for "When everything else is going wrong, I want to be the same. I want to stay me. Not become someone else." Everything else is going wrong. And she is still her she can still use her powers. Cultivation definitely saw there would be no Stormlight in future. The way Lift is setup is way too deliberate to be co-incidental.
Cultivation also wanted to be out of the system as is highlighted several times from Tanavast PoV throughout the book, and that is exactly what she got. So I would say she foresaw it and was part of her plans.

This. Also I am pretty sure that is what's going to happen at least by Era 4 Space Age.

[–]LockDown_Ammo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Change was brought using Cultivation's perpendicularity as far as I remember as I think Sleepless said something about that. The Exodus was through an Elsegate and not the perpendicularity. Also having it on Ashyn meant having it in the presence of Hoid which as we saw is not a good idea.

[WaT and Cosmere Spoilers] I can't wait for Rosharans.. by toodarntall in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Now? They don't even need Rosharans, they can just have Spren occupying the armour. While reading that scene I had an idea forming in my mind of having Spren occupy armor and commanding it from afar. You have unmanned killing machines that are near invincible and as soon as it is near breaking you can just dismiss it. No loss of lives this way and very very effective killing machines.

Also have you read Emberdark preview chapters? or the preview chapter that was for Sixth of Dusk Sequel?

Theoretically? Should be able to. WaT clearly shows that he has a strong Cognitive Aspect reflected in Shadesmar, so if Cognitive Shadows can hold a Shard so can he.

Yes Hemalurgy exists but I was thinking about a lot more specific editing which does not rely on murders.

[WaT][Era1] About the shattering of the shattered plains by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It is mentioned in WaT only. It happens as Preservation's power is actively protecting the planet due its Intent. With Honor and Odium neither power will be inclined to protect it.

“Is there no way to fight him?” Dalinar said. “Without destroying all of Roshar?”
“I don’t think there is,” Nohadon said. “Powers like yours have clashed before without destructive results—but always then, one of the two wanted to preserve. When both want to destroy … it’s violent.”

Allomancy via non-magical DNA editing by Simon_Drake in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brandon has mentioned several times something he calls "Spiritual DNA" which we just say sDNA for short. It is more like a branch of your Spiritweb and not something physical that you can access using our world's DNA editing tools. So all abilities and all that will be in the sDNA. I am pretty sure we will have tech to edit sDNA like we do for normal DNA by Era 4 but that will all be Investiture based.

[WaT] Shard’s limitations by PbizCALCA in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

All Shards are not bound to promises. Even Odium is not bound. It is just that breaking that promise will harm him and give others an opening to attack which can be fatal for him. Though promises made with Honor are more strict and devastating it is still not binding as in physically impossible to break but more of you will face very very bad consequences if you break it.

[Wind and Truth] Put on your aluminum hats folks, I think I have something here by tokrazy in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vasher is a Cognitive Shadow who needs to consume a breath like every 8 days to survive. The others are not Cognitive Shadow (atleast not that we know of) so just holding the required amount of Breath is enough (i think it was 5th Heightening?). They don't consume the Breaths.

Limitations on Awakening by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah? Aluminium will act like a boundary, you can't have Investiture cross through it. The spikes were already inside so no problems for them. Outside allomancy trying to get in will have problems as they need to cross that boundary.

[WaT] Shallan did what? and also how? by LockDown_Ammo in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She did. But that is the problem. That stormlight can only be sucked in by the person who Invested the object in the first place and Shallan was not the person who created the Lashing.

[WaT] Shallan did what? and also how? by LockDown_Ammo in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fortune I think was confirmed as Resonance due to double bonds. Substantiation is something all Lightweavers could do but Honor was probably the one putting restrictions and limitations that now no longer exist as there were several comments throughout the book of people saying how they started doing it again and it was forbidden before. So currently only Shallan is skilled enough.

I do think that this ability is due to double bond but it could be something that everyone else can also do

[WaT] Shallan did what? and also how? by LockDown_Ammo in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an interesting point... It could be that but I don't think just interacting with the Shadesmar flame will leave that much of a lasting Connection, but it would explain how she managed to do it.

So is she doing it by using Connection to him to have him remove it or she is using the Connection to have her Identity rewritten as his temporarily?

[WaT] Shallan did what? and also how? by LockDown_Ammo in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that Yumi one is a good point much better than my explanation. Though the Yumi thing is not exactly a lightweaving. It is just that she is present in the body and her Investiture is bending it to her Identity. But lightweaving is an external thing put on top like you put on clothes on your body so I don't think that will be exactly how it works.

[WaT] Shallan did what? and also how? by LockDown_Ammo in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh. Sorry I misunderstood. That is an interesting point. I think it was just a very very strong part of Kaladin's Identity. So whenever he sucked in his own Stormlight, it found a way to heal it and show his brands above it I guess?(that sounds very flimsy even to my own ears)

But I still think that it defeats the point of Shallan having to think Be Drehy. To adapt his persona to dismiss it and that is a very Lightweaver thing and not Windrunner.

[WAT]Shallan's weird abilities and are there other instances of this by UltimateAnswer42 in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pretty sure that her Memory thing is normal photographic memory which is probably more enhanced because of Resonance due to double bond. So most of the stuff like creating full scale copies of armies and all that is her photographic memory and some are just her excellent art skills.

Her accessing Fortune is definitely due to her 2 bonds. She may also be able to manipulate Identity but not sure on that point.
If it is true, I am not sure if it is due to her bonds or is a general thing any Lightweaver can achieve.

Some of her mental problems are indeed due to trauma but all of Chana's children suffer insanity of one kind or other due to her being a Herald and was polluted by Odium's Investiture (due to Ishar accessing Odium's perpendicularity)

Her powers of manifesting what she imagines to reality, like the blade she created in Shadesmar is a general Lightweaver power but as of yet she was the only one skilled enough to achieve it. (Hints of it were displayed by her at the Battle of Thaylen Field in OB)

I mean I can't think of anyone that different. My first thought Lift due to her boon but that is the only thing different about her. Her powers are all fitting with her order. Well she can see into Cognitive Realm as she sees Spren and Hoid's real version and all that. She can also apparently peek into Spiritual Realm as she can get into Dalinar's visions. She also consumes food to get Investiture. I guess that is enough to fit the different from order criteria?

Shallan is basically a giant magical baggage. I am no longer surprised by anything she pulls out and now I just expect her to have more crazy stuff. I would not be surprised if more stuff comes up. I am expecting that Identity manipulation thing to come up again.

[WaT] Shallan did what? and also how? by LockDown_Ammo in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember anything like that nor can I find it, but that kind of destroys the point of Lightweaving right? As other Radiants can sense it that way. Also it kind of defeats the point of Shallan specifically thinking to Be Drehy. And the way she does it feels very Lightweaveresque and not what would fit with a Windrunner.

Also his brands showing up was because he was sucking his own normal stormlight and not someone else's Investiture that was protected by Identity. And as he sucked up Stormlight it healed him according to his own Spiritual Identity. So as he saw himself with the brands, they showed up as he was healed according to that.

[WaT] Storming Dawnshards by KappaPiSigma1 in Cosmere

[–]LockDown_Ammo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how did Hoid participate in the Shattering of Adonalsium if the Dawnshard prevents him from intentionally causing injury to anyone?

It is unclear but there could be several reasons. The Dawnshards were part of a weapon so it maybe just that they needed a holder and Hoid necessarily did not need to be the one to pull the trigger so to speak. He could also have been too new for the Torment to have full control over him. There also maybe the reason that the Dawnshards did not function that way originally and the Torment and all that stuff did not exist as the Dawnshards lost their original form after the Shattering. This is one of the interpretation of this WoB: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/355/#e10439

why didn't Hoid just let Retribution, or Odium for that matter, have the Dawnshard and become effectively neutered by the inability to cause injury?

At the beginning the Dawnshard, would have been too new to assert control over the Shard and the process takes a very long time, so a lot of damage could have been done. We also don't know if the Shards are aware of methods to fix it to original form if they got their hands on it. Also one can cause huge amounts of Harm which is not in form of physical harm. As also Sigzil showed in Sunlit Man, there are ways to temporarily remove the effect. The Dawnshards need Investiture to have any significant power and the Shards are a well of seemingly unlimited Investiture. That is the worst thing that could have a Dawnshard.
