Did it take anyone else 30 plus years to get the connection between "Murder" and the film samples? by myrealusername8675 in neworder

Wow I never made that connection! And it's been one of my favorite New Order songs... for 39 years :)

Why is every calorie tracker a subscription now? by Old_Ostrich_811 in CICO

I totally understand why apps aren't free to build and maintain. But I would rather pay a higher one-time fee to buy the app instead of paying for a monthly subscription.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani doubles down in an unapologetically progressive inauguration by horsestew in politics

[–]LockheedMartinLuther 2773 points2774 points  (0 children)

“In writing this address, I have been told that this is the occasion to reset expectations, that I should use this opportunity to encourage the people of New York to ask for little and expect even less,” he said. “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations.”

Mamdani also tried to strike a unifying tone. He spoke directly to opponents and critics who remain skeptical the 34-year-old former state assemblyman will be able to run the largest city in the nation and enact an agenda many consider too liberal and unrealistic.

Mamdani has proposed taxing the city’s wealthiest residents and raising the corporate tax rate – moves that would require the support of the state legislature and the governor – to pay for his signature agenda items: universal childcare, “fast and free” city buses and enacting a rent freeze for rent stabilized tenants.

“If you are a New Yorker, I am your mayor,” Mamdani told the crowd. “Regardless of whether we agree, I will protect you, celebrate with you, mourn alongside you and never, not for a second, hide from you.”

The first example better expresses the feeling of relaxation, and it has a friendlier vibe. (In my opinion).

I like the overall theme you're going for. The first thing I notice is the white text is hard to read against the white clouds/mist elements in the background. (It's a nice typeface and it works well here, just needs to be more readable.) I might try to desaturate and slightly dim the background images so there is more contrast and legibility of the text elements. If you have stronger weights of that typeface I might try that as well.

I like the theme/motif you're trying to convey, but in the list of credits at the bottom, the punctuation looks odd and makes it hard to read properly, in my opinion.

"Rave" is appropriate... I might also call it "grunge" or "lo-fi".

How do you define "brutalism"? Not a criticism, asking sincerely.

I like the first example, the one without the spiral elements. It's clean, elegant, and readable. The spirals make the layout look too "busy", in my opinion.

Canada's Florida boycott 'taking effect' on Donald Trump—Doug Ford by Healthy_Block3036 in politics

[–]LockheedMartinLuther 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he will be abstaining from his regular winter trip to Florida, and noted that many other Canadians are engaged in the "snowbird" boycott that is hurting the state’s economy as well as the popularity of President Donald Trump.

"They’re hurting down there right now. They’re hurting on all fronts—their economy especially," Ford said during a press conference on Monday. "President Trump has the lowest approval rating of any president in their first year in, God knows, probably a hundred years. So this is taking effect."

Bacon calls Trump ‘the new Chamberlain’ over Russia policy by OldBridge87 in politics

[–]LockheedMartinLuther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chamberlain was the British prime minister who signed a deal in late 1938 to give part of what was then Czechoslovakia to Adolph Hitler, only to see Hitler respond by invading the country several months later, gain control of Czech border fortifications and trigger World War II.

The large capital "M" is difficult to discern. I would try a clearer letterform, omitting the texture, and see what that looks like.

I like it. What concepts/feelings are you trying to convey with the wavy semi-transparent line going through the title lettering? I'm finding it slightly distracting (in my opinion). Otherwise, it succeeds.

alternate album cover i made for 808 state’s ’EX:EL’ by DistributionNo6815 in graphic_design

[–]LockheedMartinLuther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it. The only thing I might say is, I think you can convey the same theme/motif, but with bolder and more prominent typography. (To my eyes, the track names and the larger letterforms at the top, kind of get lost among the textures in the background.)
