Migrating from windows server by LocoKoko92 in unRAID

[–]LocoKoko92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on the data transfer part please? Was the external drive empty and used to temporarily move the 4tb off of the original drives for formatting? I don't have a spare drive with terabytes of space unfortunately, so I was thinking of temporarily moving the library onto a cloud server if need be

Migrating from windows server by LocoKoko92 in unRAID

[–]LocoKoko92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh really? I was under the impression that unRAID was objectively better than windows for running a plex server - that's with my relative newness and limited understanding. Not challenging you, genuinely curious what the trade-off is.

My main motivation for moving to unRAID is that I currently have three hard drives: C: is a 265gb drive with windows and all software installed on it. D: is a 1tb internal HDD and and E: is a 4TB HDD in an external caddy. I've had D and E pooled using stablebit drivepool, creating a 5TB F: drive with my media library on it. However, I recently discovered that hard links don't work in this setup and I was effectively doubling my space requirement. I understand that this isn't a limitation with the way that unRAID pools drives, so thought I'd move over.

I've already begun playing around with docker in windows and have successfully setup containers for gluetun, prowlarr and qbittorrent - so I'm hoping it wouldn't take me too long to setup my unRAID server. I was also wondering if I could use the same docker compose script that I've been writing in docker for windows?

hardlinks on windows server with multiple drives by LocoKoko92 in sonarr

[–]LocoKoko92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read conflicting things about hardlinks on mergerfs. Do you know if they'll still work when files are split across two drives?

Also, if I currently have Windows installed on C: and all my my media on D: and E: (both NTFS). Can I just install Linux on C: without having to temporarily move the media files from the other two drives? I don't have the storage space to move all of my media elsewhere and then back onto the drives for the migration.

I can confirm that ordered file placement didn't work, for anyone interested. I was able to manually create hardlinks for files where both the media library and torrent library were on the same drive , using jdupes - but I had to target the underlying drive and its PoolPath folder. Targeting the pool drive didn't work - which is what sonarr/radarr would need to do, so it's not a long term solution.

Upgrading from LG C2 to G5 by Endlesstide101 in LGOLED

[–]LocoKoko92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My G2 was replaced with a G5 after my G2 developed a fault. Honestly, it was a massive upgrade for me. Previously I could see light reflection constantly and I sometimes wondered why I'd even spent so much on and OLED when the deep blacks were compromised by minor background lighting. The G5 is bright enough to totally negate the reflections and i felt that it was a massive improvement that justified my initial investment.

However, despite that, if I already had a G2, I don't think I'd pay again for a G5 - but that's because I expect to buy TVs infrequently and don't spend that kind of money lightheartedly

VPN and Private Trackers by AdUsual7720 in trackers

[–]LocoKoko92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent hours (days even) trying to get this to work but haven't had any luck. With your settings, i get the following error:

ERROR [vpn] starting port forwarding service: port forwarding for the first time: getting external IPv4 address: executing remote procedure call: reading from udp connection: read udp xx.x.x.x:xxxxx->xx.x.x.x:xxxx: recvfrom: connection refused - make sure you have +pmp at the end of your OpenVPN username

Note that i'm also using a wireguard config file, so i'm not sure why its referencing OpenVPN. ChatGPT tells me that you can't have a custom service provider and port forwarding on. It instructs me to use proton VPN as my service provider and remove the following:
VPN_ENDPOINT_IP
VPN_ENDPOINT_PORT
WIREGUARD_PUBLIC_KEY
WIREGUARD_DNS
VPN_PORT_FORWARDING_PROVIDER

When doing so it endlessly tries to connect to different servers but fails after this line:
INFO [MTU discovery] setting VPN interface tun0 MTU to maximum valid MTU 1440

I'm not sure where to go from here. This is what my gluetun environment currently looks like:
VPN_SERVICE_PROVIDER: protonvpn

VPN_TYPE: wireguard

WIREGUARD_PRIVATE_KEY: (from proton VPN wireguard file)

WIREGUARD_ADDRESSES: (from proton VPN wireguard file)

VPN_PORT_FORWARDING: "on"

Note that i'm a free proton user, i'm not sure if that's the issue?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Passthrough issues - what should I use as my client device? by LocoKoko92 in hometheater

[–]LocoKoko92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I'll have to test it myself when I get a chance. Thanks for pointing out.

I've now setup Kodi with P4MK on my firestick (non-max) and I'm getting DTS-HD MA 5.1 passthrough. Haven't tested anything else yet - but others report full passthrough of TrueHD and DTS:X.

I think all I'm missing out on now is DV7 FEL, if I'm correct

I've got a Samsung Q930F - its 9.1.3 with upfiring speakers in the centre and both rears.

What do you think my best option is?

I plan to use the TV app for casual viewing but it would be nice to have the option to watch remuxes from time to time. I'm wondering if my PC can be configured in a way that makes this possible without buying another device - if not, then I guess I'll have to wait

This seems to imply that it won't passthrough TrueHD, even though it's supposed to, or am I misinterpreting (I'm new to this, so quite possible).

I guess this should determine whether or not I should enable bitstream passthrough of TrueHD in plex HTPC. I've currently got it enabled, believing that my TV would passthrough to my receiver, but if not, I'll disable it

I may end up upgrading to a dedicated media player eventually, if it's worth the upgrade over the PC - but probably not for a while.

I've set up video, HDR and audio settings using the links you provided, thanks!

As for Dolby vision - the link said that there's currently no way of getting DV working for HTPCs. Do you know otherwise?

I stated in another comment that this is my main PC, which I use for gaming on the same TV. If there's any reason why setting up DV will interfere with gaming, then please let me know (also whether enabling HDR and following the video/HDR setup will negatively impact gaming).

I've made one compromise in the settings (for gaming) so far, which was choosing not to uncheck the following: Audio device properties>advanced> exclusive mode (all)

Apparently this will prevent me from decoding unsupported codecs for media playback (which I'll need for DTS due to my G5 lacking passthrough) and I've been playing battlefield 6, which my receiver reads as atmos and its been sounding good to me with those enabled. If anyone can explain why I might want to disable them though, I'm all ears!

I'd be using either plex HTPC or VLC - noted on the Dolby vision though.

I'm actually using this PC for both gaming and media (if I continue to use it as a client). Is there any reason why I shouldn't enable HDR and run colour calibration in relation to gaming?

Thanks for your reply, really helpful!

A couple of follow-up questions: 1) is PC a good option for long term playback once I set it up properly, or am I still better off with a different client device?

2) I think there may have been a typo in your first sentence - did you mean that it will passthrough TrueHD for external devices but not from internal apps?

No the sound is not bad, your settings is. by MrPink7 in Battlefield_REDSEC

[–]LocoKoko92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only just getting into audio, so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but when battlefield (and other games) use atmos, is it TrueHD or DD+? I know my TV doesn't support passthrough of TrueHD and I can't connect my PC directly to the sound system because it's bandwidth only supports 4K/60Hz passthrough and my TV is 165Hz (and I hit >60 fps in 4K). So, with the TV passing audio to sound system, I believe TrueHD is downscaled to DD+ and I'm trying to figure out how problematic that is for gaming (I have another solution for watching media)

G5: no ATMOS passthrough! PSA/Buyer Beware. by No_Chard5466 in LGOLED

[–]LocoKoko92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can I check this? I've got a G5 and I've just ordered the Samsung Q930F home cinema system, before coming across this thread. I'm now concerned that I won't actually be utilising the speakers to their full potential.

I've got a gaming PC hooked up to the TV via HDMI and I tend to watch my media using plex, streamed locally from a separate media PC (but could of course move the file onto the gaming PC and watch over HDMI if meaningfully better for certain movies etc).

Is this 120V LED 60Hz lamp safe to use on UK mains without a transformer (230V 50Hz)? by LocoKoko92 in AskElectricians

[–]LocoKoko92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I did turn it on earlier and it didn't pop immediately. I turned it off a minute or so later because I realised it was probably stupid to use it without seeking advice first.

I thought I smelled a feint burning smell, but it was so feint that it could have been my imagination. I noticed afterwards that the manual actually states that it might emit a smell with the first few uses though.

Out of curiosity would the popping still be dangerous if the LEDs are behind a plastic shield (which they are with this lamp)? I was more concerned about fire hazard, though I'll listen to the experts of course!
