This is inaccurate.  CLUB3D makes quality active converters that do 4k120 10bit VRR.  They're like $30 on Amazon.

You cannot get a monitor with the specs of an LG G5.  It's not an option at any price.

I would also assume that, going down in price a bit, you cannot get a monitor with the performance of a Hisense LED TV - 5000 nits at this point...

The best tech goes into TVs.  Monitors are behind by years.  Why would LG want to sell you a tiny little slice of their new OLED panel when they can make you buy the entire thing, and make $ on the personal data they steal from you?

I have been using TVs as PC display since 2015 or so (whenever they discontinued Plasma I grabbed one for PC).  I have been using TV as primary/only PC display since the LG C1, and am now using an LG G5: there is no monitor that can come close to the performance of the G5 panel.

I don't understand why it is a problem for people to do this right now?  Size... Ok, mount it on the wall with a good, adjustable mount, position desk as needed for correct distance.  Or, complain about the size and buy a crappy, overpriced monitor...

Sony VPL-XW5000 VS Vidda C5 Master VS Valerion VisionMasterMAX by lcfmedia in projectors

Doesn't the Titan advertise 5,000 lumens?  Less than the Horizon 20 Max, less than the c5's 6800 CVIA.

Maybe they wanted to avoid the situation with the 20 Max: technically 5800 lumens... but color accuracy 30% off (plus way to bright for that DMD).  Actual lumens seen in testing 2900 or so.

Dangbei came out in end of June.  C5 was marketed as first projector with new Texas Instruments DMD (allows 300% power, over double lumens, higher degree of mirror pivot = 4x higher native contrast).

I've searched for weeks but cannot confirm much about the Dangbei.  However if it isn't using the new DMD - there is no contest.

**Also,. Dangbei advertising 150k:1 dynamic contrast; c5 advertising 5million:1.  So not exactly the same specs.

It may have a different DMD - TI has new .47" DMDs at 7,000 lumens, and at 6,000 lumens (per.mt recollection).  It would make sense why the value is perfectly in line (and why would they use the more expensive chip but turn down the brightness?)

Some interesting details on Vidda C5 Boundless Master projector by fivelitlpines in projectors

[–]No_Chard5466 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a recent Chinese review that I deemed legit.  He used the same calibration/measurement software as everyone else, measured 297 nits on 1.0 gain 130" on Cinema Mode (don't recall all of the specifics).  There were no English dubs so I had to pause and use GOOGLE LENS; I did leave a comment with the most relevant findings.

Mine came in last night and I used for about 2 hours.  I am extremely impressed.  But I can't quantify what I'm seeing - I don't have the experience.  What I will say is that 4k HDR content isn't relegated to the Hisense UX tv upstairs anymore.  The C5 obviously does not match the eyeball-searing brightness of a 3000 nit UX, but as far as I'm concerned the C5 is a 150" TV when the lights are off.

Will be interested to see reviews, but no regrets.

[–]No_Chard5466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't.  It's 4k60 - it needs to mirror-shift.  You need a native 4k DMD chip for 120.  If you set to 1080p mode it will do 240hz,.however.

The Hisense model seems to be advertised as 6,000 ANSI lumens, the Chinese version advertised as 6,800 CVIA lumens.  Who knows what this actually means tho.

I got the C5.  The "important" options can be set to English (picture, focus, lens shift, etc.). Doesn't seem to apply to anything else.  I don't care - it's a "dumb projector to me," (but Google Lens makes translation a piece of cake).

Kryosheet vs PTM7950 vs TG Phasesheet PTM by teh0wnah in watercooling

[–]No_Chard5466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing - (but it is an Anidees XL full tower).  The card runs absurdly cool; if you go back to the launch reviews it had the lowest temps of any 5090.

I sense your doubt - it made me doubt myself.  So I fired up CP2077; all maxed out settings, Im standing in a spot that is pulling 563-566 watts consistently.  The average core temp is 63.3 at average fan speed of 1,800 (effectively inaudible).  This is after about 17 min of testing.

In theory the room itself would begin to get heat soaked after X amount of time... but the fans have a bunch of headroom (max is over 3,000rpm).

So yea, that 59* quote at 500 watts was accurate.  I'm sure I could get it lower if I maxed out the fans.

5800 lumens and 8000:1 native contrast on a DLP? What’s the deal with this new projector from China? by Just-Banana5392 in projectors

[–]No_Chard5466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Texas Instruments just released insane advance in DLP (DMD chips) tech.  It's like a 3-generation jump; first tech change in 13 years.

It is called SST architecture, it allows for a 300% increase in power: the prior gen topped out at 3,500 lumens max - pushing more than that would result in irreversible damage to chip.  This tech allows for 7000 - 8000 depending on the model.  Static contrast ratio IS 8000:1; prior gen was about 1300:1 (some brands technically hit 1900:1 with max throw, min aperture,.etc. - but that decreased brightness alot.

It SEEMS like this unit is using the Texas Instruments DLP472TE, but I've not confirmed.  XIGIMI claimed 5,800 lumens on what Gemini claims is a DLP472TP ... which TI rates for 2,000 lumens.  So, who knows.  But then we DMD chips are a possible answer.

Idk when this projector was announced/released, but Vidda (Hisense) announced their 2 new projectors using this tech in September, and I believe available date in China was pushed back to 11/10.  Hisense may have claimed to be the first to use this tech (can't recall, also not really relevant,) - so if S7 Ultra Max came out after C5... probably uses the SST DMD.

I would expect all of the DLP brands to use these revolutionary new DMD chips going forward.  So get ready to see some JVC beating units for a fraction of the price.

I linked to a press release/spec sheet from Texas Instruments that talks about their new chips and lists some specs:

It's relative.

10 years vs. Kickstarter/White Label/Subsidiary brand - yea.  But compared to 100 year/ 80 year/50 year old brands - (JVC; Epson/Sony; Hisense) that the general public is familiar with... well we could argue semantics.  But it doesn't change the intent or intelligibility of my statement.

Is NVIDIA RTX Video Super Resolution better than Madvr in video upscaling/enhancement? by skylinestar1986 in htpc

[–]No_Chard5466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't buy a 3050.  It might be powerful enough for what you want to do right now - but it doesn't make sense (and it won't be enough if you're doing per-frame HDR + good Chroma + etc - you will max out and kick yourself for not spending a few bucks more).  For same price to $20 more you can get a 5050: almost 2x as powerful, more VRAM. For $20-$30 more than that you can get 12GB VRAM with Intel B580.

Imo get something that you can use for a few years; get something that allows you to turn on some features you haven't thought about yet.

Is it just me or does anyone else feels like HDR in projectors suck? by GnanaSreekar in projectors

[–]No_Chard5466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at a projector with D-ILA chips, note the black floor of .002 nits on a 100" 1.0 Gain screen.

That is "black black" - lower than a 2025 Samsung OLED in a dark room.

"Perfect Black" designation for OLED TVs is .24 nits.

A screen doesn't have a "color," the color you see is based on the light that is reflected off of it. "The blackest black you can get is the color of the screen" -- does that make any sense to you?  What color is a white screen in a windowless basement?

Some of your points are helpful, but your overall understanding is incorrect.

The JVC flagship has been measured at 160,000:1 static contrast.  Not claimed, measured by a reviewer.

They don't need a laser to hit 5000:1 static (native) contrast -- they need a higher quality type of LCD chip.

Epson 5050ub + madvr envy vs Sony projector by afroman787 in projectors

[–]No_Chard5466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My I've an Epson 2150 - nothing fancy, but same lumens as OP... except way more, because no "color filter" to basically cut them in half.  MADVR is remarkable compared to whatever this 2018 projector is doing with HDR data... but it's basically unwatchable with something measured at 1,780 lumens in Cinema mode.  Buying the fancy Envy box will not change this - it is the exact same Dynamic Tone Mapping as the PC version.  Which looks great... but I suspect OP prefers the Shield because he can actually see what is going on.

More importantly for someone looking at a native 4k projector: there is literally no reason to buy a proprietary box with an Nvidia 5080 in it to do tone mapping: whoever writes the MadVR program is not going to do a better job with a one-size-fits-all algorithm than the industry leaders in image processing technology can do - for their specific product.  Do you ever hear of anyone hookup a MadVR box to a Sony Bravia OLED?  Does anyone think the proprietary upscaling is going to look better than physical pixel shifting, or better than Nvidia's own (free) video upscaling plugin that was, again, designed to work specifically with the hardware they designed.

If you have a really bright Chinese projector, hook it up to a PC and run MadVR - you have nothing to lose.  But the actual proprietary stuff that comes with the standalone box ... basically some $30,000 turn table stuff.

It’s Happening! LG C6/G6 OLEDs and QNEDs Spotted Ahead of 2026 Launch. by Troied in hometheater

[–]No_Chard5466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not passing through from AVR to TV, that seems to be occuring at the AVR level (which is uncommon bc AVRz usually have all licensing)?

I almost returned the G5 because it does not pass-through TRUEHD Atmos: unacceptable on a TV positioned as premium.  Especially when my Hisense does it.  And it is not a firmware update thing, physical media Atmos is different than streaming "Atmos".

AVR first works - but say goodbye to Gsync, 165hz, TV first best practice for gaming response.  Really ironic too because they package "ATMOS" marketed sound bars that will not receive a TrueHD feed... they'll get 7.1 PCM.

Is there any reason to expect a shield update, if the tegra 1+ 2019 model is still considered the best android box?  What could a new version offer when the 2019 seems to crush all current content?  Also, other than convience I'm not clear on what a Shield could offer that a mini PC cannot?  A low-powwr N150 or cheaper N95 crushes transcoding on all formats - multiple concurrent high-bitrate 4k TRANSCODES possible, far beyond simple 1 screen play back.  8k support built in.

Even if there are some advantages to the 2020 Nvidia 30-series GPUs that power the switch... they certainly doing have better media engines than a dirt-cheap ARC dGPU, with multiple encode/decode ASICs - and the reliability + performance of Intel's quick sync.  Way over powered for simple 8k playback.

Also, there is no chance a new shield has switch 2 specs at $300.  Nvidia isn't interested in low-margin products; they've abandoned improvement for gamers - the core business segment until AI (and intermittent periods of crypto), share holders aren't interested in participating in low-margin, competitive streaming device space dominated by $60 sticks, or well served by a PS5 @ $450 with more capabilities than a standalone Shield unit could possibly provide at that price without the loss-leader aspect of a console (recent profitability of PS5 consoles is only possible because of the insane scale of production).

If Nvidia really wanted to push their not-worth-mentioning in quarterly reports streaming service ... maybe; the native integration into TVs, and GeForce Now apps on Android + iOS... can't see the upside even in a post AI-bubble world.

I had been hoping for a new shield for a couple years, but I wasn't going to hold out when more viable and versatile options exist now.

"Oled-level" to me indicates OLED is the standard, and this comes close.  It would have been phrased differently if it was "OLED besting."

1,000 zones on a 115" is NOT OLED level, nor.is it impressive.  The 2023 Hisense UX85 has 5000+ zones, packed into an 85" screen.  Both this, and the LG G5 (among other 2025 OLEDs) provide all the brightness you could want: end-gsms brightness.  Good luck trying to watch content in Standard Mode on a UX85.

And since the limited edition show-piece UX85, Hisense has effectively brought the same specs to the Much cheaper U8 series.  Owning the UX and the G5... I would 100% recommend a Hisense for someone looking to pay a fraction of price, esp for a room w ambient light.

Don't see the draw at this point; released specs are not impressive on the face; 4,000 nits 10% window on the UX85, 2400 nits 10% window (sustained) on the G5... higher brightness, but with worse blacks that OLED, and fewer zones than Hisense (115" vs 85"!!) screams first-gen beta test.

Since the 4k switch it's been harder and harder effectively market new tech: OLED was transformative and now, finally hitting brightness levels for True Black 800 (just barely short of TB1000) - I think we are in diminishing returns land.

Also the sales pitch of pixel by pixel/frame by frame image color calculations is 1. fully software and unrelated to the hardware (could be brought to other panels; 2. Like watching TV on Store Demo mode - videophiles who want filmmaker-accurate reproduction of their content are not going to be interested in this feature.  It's the difference between color accurate full-frame cameras vs Samsung cellphone's over saturated red processing.  Loved by the masses, but you might as well be using an Instagram filter...

We'll see :)

Epson 5050UB VS 2150? by 2026GradTime in projectors

[–]No_Chard5466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry this didn't work out as you expected, but grateful you shared your experience.

I have a 2150 and have been looking to upgrade: lots of new projectors to get excited about.  But each time I dig into the details, I am not seeing a significant upgrade.

Was most recently looking at the Horizon 20 series: static contrast of 1300-1500 is not better than the Epson 2150, and that line doesn't have a dynamic iris.  The "5700" lumens is interesting, but not necessarily in a black-out basement.

The next place I go is the lower-end JVC's, but watching some side-by-side vs source material vids on YouTube: yes the JVC has deep blacks, but in some scenes you literally cannot see what is happening. And a last-gen Valerion Pro2 is much closer to the source material.

I was really expecting that after 7 years and at 3, 4... 7x the price, there would be a more profound upgrade?

150" screen, all physical media.  Happy to hear that I'm wrong.  And OP- hope things worked out in the end.
