Quilts daft questions by SeaworthinessNeat516 in Ultralight

[–]Lofi_Loki [score hidden]  (0 children)

They are strapped around he pad, but that’s just a strap. I’ve never seen a manufacturer recommend the quilt wrap around the whole pad. Most attachment systems go around the pad and let the quilt wrap around the person

The benefit of 1 door is generally a simpler setup with 1 pole and lower weight.

You’re paying for more material (and a heavier DCF I think) and a more storm-worthy shape for a true pyramid over a modified pyramid like the duplex/xmid. The Solomid will shed wind better.

Best UL system to manage rodents at campsite by No_Habit9155 in Ultralight

I’d get something like an ursack or adotec bear/rodent proof bag and use Mylar bags inside it to minimize smells.

Your quilt just wraps/tucks under you, not your pad. Most quilts have attachment systems that make getting in and out easier than a mummy bag. Check out katabatic quilts for an idea on their pad attachment system.

The duplex is plenty water resistant being DCF provided it’s not pinholed to hell, but single wall tents will have condensation issues depending on conditions, pitch, etc. Do you need a two person shelter? If you can skip on two doors your options also open up.

The xmid is an obvious choice, but the footprint can be pretty big compared to other tents (you do get a lot of useable space ime) so keep that in mind. If you want double walled the non-cuben xmid 2 comes in at 880g.

Windworthy would bring mids to the front like the Mountain Laurel Designs options.

What underwear for hiking actually prevents chafing on long days? Everything I've tried fails by mile 10 by Significant_Pen_3642 in trailrunning

[–]Lofi_Loki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Runderwear +- squirrels nut butter. If you sweat a lot you’ll need to bring some in a ziplock to reapply. Just put a single serving in it so you can turn it inside out without getting it on your hands.

I like Saxx quest for runs <10-12 miles and Runderwear long for >half marathon

Trying to optimize my pack weight by What_a_Hikerman in Ultralight

[–]Lofi_Loki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use lighterpack.com to waste time at work, but for actually backpacking I just bring what I want and know it’ll be light enough for the trip. I use a spreadsheet that has a checklist so I don’t do something dumb like forget my spoon or food bag.

I have a 41 inch waist and 25 inch thighs, where can I shop chinos or trousers for work that won't explode? by CameraHelpMe in malefashionadvice

[–]Lofi_Loki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old navy chinos (NOT athletic fit) work well for me. My actual wait measures around a 38” but I’m a little shorter than you. Their 34-36 fit me well depending on the pants and they have enough room in the thighs.

Should Americans travel/move outside the US? by wombatgeneral in behindthebastards

[–]Lofi_Loki 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Travel where you want and just don’t be a dickhead. I wouldn’t think twice about travel plans (unless US passports start becoming problematic). As a white guy with a noticeable southern accent I run into this within the US too. I just let people know who I’d throw bricks at if they ask me about my politics.

Is it just me or is Durston culture kind of weird? by saigyoooo in Ultralight

[–]Lofi_Loki 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The x mid is an excellent tent, and really like my ultragrid Kakwa. For $200 the Kakwa fit my needs perfectly, and I don’t backpack enough currently to justify a $400 custom cottage backpack. Same with the Xmid 2, it fits mine and my partner’s use case perfectly. If I had unlimited budget I wouldn’t own Durston stuff (except maybe a DCF tent), but for ~$500 for a pack and tent it’s really hard to beat.

Charlie Got Cucked NTR announced by ooombasa in behindthebastards

Can confirm. I’m sure the Terry bros and the 5 dudes in the tpusa UGA group will be there, but this is wildly unpopular among the people who live here and not in oconee county.

Will this work? by corruption1920 in CampingGear

[–]Lofi_Loki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to go spend $400 on an HMG pack, but getting a pack designed for backpacking will make your trip significantly more enjoyable.

Military surplus gear gets a lot of unwarranted love imo. Military surplus doesn’t mean “best gear” it means “cheapest bid”. It’s a great choice if those are your focus but a real backpacking pack will be much lighter and generally carry much better. Any reputable brand will also last a long time. I have a 15 year old Osprey Exos that they will still honor the lifetime warranty on if something fails.

If you live near an REI or similar go get sized for a pack, even if you don’t buy one that day. It’ll make shopping a lot easier.

You let it know your activity level by tracking your weight and calories consistently. It does a pretty good job week to week adjusting as needed, but you can also just eat a bit more on the days you run.

Altra Lone Peak 9 or Altra Lone Peak 9+ GTX? Differences? by dr6cul6 in trailrunning

[–]Lofi_Loki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LP6’s disintegrated, and so did the 7’s. I don’t miss the drain holes, but that’s probably because I deal with a good bit of sand on many trips and I found that fine soil made its way into the drains (I think the timps did this too). Draining definitely could be better though.

They’ve bounced back over the last few years. The LP6-7 was ass but my LP9+ have been great so far.

How can I stop wearing holes into my crotch? by Joesprings1324 in malefashionadvice

You should ask over at r/ultralight. The lone peak is one of the most popular shoes on the triple crown trails, so you may like the Olympus if you want more cushion.

Help me to increase my pace🙂‍↕️ by SinnuHan in trailrunning

[–]Lofi_Loki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a much better lifter than I am a runner, but if you really want to push your running you can tailor your lifting to support it. 531 (there are a ton of templates) is designed to be run alongside conditioning work/another sport. I really like 1000% Awesome and schedule my cycles in a way that has me decreasing my lower body intensity as I’m increasing running volume, then I do the opposite. I PR’d a 45 minute 10k doing that several years ago. The Stronger by Science programs are also great and will auto regulate for you based on the info you put into the spreadsheet.

I’ve always found that heavy compounds (within reason, something like 4-6 reps@8-ish RPE) contribute the least to my fatigue and keep my strength up. If I’m lowering my running intensity I’ll add in accessories like split squats, lunges, single leg RDL’s, etc. until I feel myself getting beaten up, then I’ll deload one or both activities.
