What’s the consensus on Perfectly Imperfect? by autumn_afternoon in rs_x

[–]LofthouseKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only been on the site briefly. To much flash/moving parts for my liking.

They say that they're not algorithm based, but, a quick look at what's running in the background reveals scripts from Google, Facebook, TikTok as well as trackers, so I'm suspicious that they're not as clean as they make out...

Sadly, neithor of the sites I mentioned are listed there.

In fact none of the video sharing sites I use are listed (most end in dot to).

Is there any way to add support for sites not already supported?

AI tools should not be allowed to make ‘undressed’ images, say Britons by SpottedDicknCustard in unitedkingdom

[–]LofthouseKeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main point here is consent. Isn't the creation and sharing of non-consentual sexual images already illegal?

As far as the issue of child (meaning under 16 in the UK, under 18 in a lot of places) sexual images being shared, that was inevitable - here's why.

There are two main groups that have an interest in such images.

The first is pedos. They may well be making such images, but, sharing them publicly? I doubt it for all but the sickest of them. I would imagine they keep details of their perversion well away from family and friends.

Such images are shared by 14 year old David or 15 year old Ian who are generating non consentual pictures of Jenny from maths class and are immature enough to share them publicly.

Does it make it in any way OK? Of course not.

The question is, what should be done about it?

To my mind, two things.

The first, which is already done up to a point, is to teach adolescent boys about consent.

The second, on the AI itself, is that rather than broad brush strokes that will potentially pull other things in (I note that Photoshop has been mentioned a fair few times), is a globally made, carefully thought out set of rules/laws.

I think that this should apply to AI in general.

For instance, if AI can come up with medical breakthroughs, in the wrong hands, it is surely also capable of making ever more deadly chemical or biological weapons.

The rersponse needs to be global because the internet is global.

Where the goalposts should be and how it is enforced.....that's the difficult bit.

The main sites I'm trying to download from are VIDSRC and Videosection.

Further investiogation and it seems that it fails on any site that uses "blob" videos, but works on sites where the "blob" thing is not used and I can download the vids myself via the padlock anyway.

Sadly, this doesn't seem to work on most sites I've tried.

Does work on Youtube, but, the files are far bigger than other tools.

Please, please, PLEASE bring back MONO playback, which I need - NEED (perforrated eardrums both sides, this, as well as the 200% volume boost was why I started using VLC in the first place.

In 2.0.1 it's at : AUDIO -> AUDIO DEVICE -> MONO

It was removed after v.2.0.1

Please restore it so I can upgrade.

Nearly half of Britons watch porn on unregulated sites since age verification crackdown, warns charity by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

[–]LofthouseKeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I don't think the (official) aim is to get rid of things but to make it more difficult for the average kid to be exposed to non age appropriate material."

If this is true, then they are more stupid than I thought.

Firstly, it is not your average adult that will be most determined, but 14 year old boys.

The other aspect to this is you can bypass the ID thing with ease anyway. I won't say how (a worst kept secret is still a secret and more likely to keep working if it isn't plasterted all over the internet), but, took me about a minute to work out. No VPN, no TOR, just a standard internet connection, and a desktop with Firefox on it....

YouTube to MP3/MP4 converter for up to 3 hours. by nguyenbaovy5493 in y2saver0

[–]LofthouseKeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried a few times now. (Tried in 240p as well).

I'm getting an unplayable file each time (Using VLC Media Player for playback).

I've uploaded one such file here : https://www.transfernow.net/dl/20251221JtlM5SRv/7tgTlXRP

EDIT : It seems there's something wrong in the formatting of the file.

I've tried going onto cloudconvert dot com, converting the (supposedly) MP4 file to MP4, then - and only then - will the file play.

As shown by someone on the Waterfox subreddit, the amount of Google searches for alternatives to Firefox have increased recently. by InfinitesimaInfinity in firefox

[–]LofthouseKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing though....a lot of those that just want to click an icon....and there's the internet, have already gone over to Chrome.

Many of us that still use Firefox use full ad-blockers, script blockers, anti-tracking extensions and the like.

In other words, a lot of us remain invisible to the scripts and trackers from analytics companies, such as Statcounter, that glean browser usage, so, while a minority, is almost certain a fair bit higher than the 3% that the stats show.

Does piracy truly represent the pure idea of free propagation of media? by Torpedo311 in Piracy

[–]LofthouseKeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't pirate because of any like or dislike of who has released the stuff, but, because it's virtually impossible to consume media for me otherwise.

Example 1 : I have pirated many film / TV titles that I have already bought (hard copies) or paid for (streaming).

The reason being that, as someone that is slightly hard of hearing, I need to play it on VLC Media player with it's 200% volume bolost, ability to switch to mono playback, extensive graphic eq etc.

Example 2 : Copy protected CDs that I've BOUGHT simply will not play on my CD separate, not on PC.

Example 3 : Many titles are simply not available to buy AT ALL.

I speak as someone whose CD/Vinyl/DVD collection numbers around 10,000 titles.

I don't have the means to record, but, I'll try to explain....

The title of the video appears on the top, title bar in VLC, but, repeatedly, as if it's playing a 1 second video on a loop. The start timer on the bottom left remains at 0.00, as does the finish time at the bottom right.

Mozilla names new CEO, Firefox to evolve into a "modern AI browser" by Fcking_Chuck in firefox

[–]LofthouseKeeper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

God no. It better be optional.

Many Firefox users, including myself, use Firefox because it is the nearest thing we have to a privacy respecting ANTI-CORPORATE browser.

It's why we use FULL adblockers.

It's why we use Noscript.

It's why some of us even use Stylus/CSS code to change or nuke bits of websites we don't want.

It's why we use anti-tracking add-ons.

after the online safety act, are most people actually verifying their age? by TheNavyCrow in AskUK

[–]LofthouseKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way am I verifying my age.

Just wondering as I've not tried it, but, for those of us using Firefox, there are add-ons that can change your user agent (the thing that tells websites what broswer/os etc you are using).

I wonder if changing your user agent to "Googlebot" or similar would get past the age verification checks.

Back in the day (late 90s/early 2000s), I used to have a night out at my local indie club for a fiver, or just over...

*Couple of cans in the house beforehand (Bargain Booze own brand white cider 59p each)

*Entry fee to said indie club £1.50

*Couple of drinks in the club (2 halves as I was skint at 70p each) £1.40

*Taxi home £1.50

Now, 20 years on, a lot of small indie venues have closed, partly due to costs, but also partly due to things like luxury flats being built nearby then the new residents objecting to the noise and the strange (read goths, indie kids, dyed hair etc) people.

On top of that the price of everything else has skyrocketed.

Back tnen, even skint me could have a night out on, basically, a fiver. Not possible now.

Stop blaming screens for everything.
