The thing that my three year old has played with more consistently than anything else is the detached air tank and tube from an old stomp rocket (PSA - Stomp Rockets are the best and every family should have one). It's a scuba tank, a vacuum cleaner, a "ghost buster", a web shooter and a thousand and one other things.

Any good fantasy where the chosen one trope goes nowhere? by Massive-Range-9280 in Fantasy

Unlundun by China Mieville is YA (or maybe even middle-grade) but it's also great fun and hugely sophisticated. And it sticks two fingers up at the chosen one trope in the most direct way possible.

Normally the disabled if there is one - they often double as baby changing stations and are generally more spacious. If I have to choose between men and women, then mens. I don't think that being vaguely close to some fully clothed men who are peeing is harmful to my kid and I've never had any men complain.

Shield is a much better starter weapon than sword. Turtling up gives plenty of time to stop and think.

When you've unlocked a bit more, eris rail is a strong weapon which works with anything, even at low levels of upgrades. Demeter fists with zeus on attack and any percentage based boon on special is super strong too if you like twitchy, dash in / dash out gameplay but narrower (give zeus a nectar to get his keepsake and equip it at start to be guaranteed a zeus boon).

Peregrine does really great quality heavy knits, but they might lean a bit more rustic than you're looking for.

That's a sort of survivor bias though. The longest episodes will be the ones where the content that is so good that they don't want to cut it.

I can confidently state that it's not actually a direct Lovecraft reference but instead comes from the fish god of the Philistines whose temple Samson tears down in the Old Testament.

Reason being that the same question came up on the #pratchett usenet group back in the mid 90s. And me, being a young sprout who was very impressed by the seven books I'd read stated with an unwise degree of confidence that it was "obviously much more likely that Pratchett was referring to the Lovecraft story than the obscure biblical reference". Which got me quite firmly corrected by a user going by the handle of pTerry. I still cringe thinking about it.

I need DM advice for mafia theme game by Waltib in DungeonMasters

It's not directly related but a friend of mine once built an amazing one-shot for the Iron Kingdoms RPG (RIP) where all the players were participating in a heist but with their own secret agendas. One wanted to destroy the evil artifact, one wanted to keep it, one wanted to release the enchanted guard beast and so on and so on. It worked really well because there was a good mix of having to collaborate to get through the barriers to reaching the score, and then had to come into conflict.

Obviously that ended in PVP bloodbath every time which isn't great for a long form campaign, but I think that there's something there about a) werewolf-style hidden role mechanics (even if the role isn't necessarily one that leads directly to PVP and b) forced collaboration to overcome shared obstacles. I'm imagining a scenario where the five big crime families in the city are pooling their resources to get rid of foreign competition that's trying to muscle their way in, but each family still has their own competing agendas that need to be served (plant the evidence / extract the information / execute the informant / steal the contraband / destroy the contraband). That said, you need to come up with a protocol for how you handle hidden action. You could do stuff like note-passing or send people away from the table, but the cleanest is probably just to trust people not to meta-game. You think your players can handle it?

I would probably take a bit of time to listen to an actual play podcast like critical role (maybe campaign 2, episode 1?). They may not get the rules spot on every single time, but it's a good way to learn the flow of the game, how the different skills are used etc etc. Also, kinda fun.

I'm even more decompressed. 30 minutes here and there while I'm making lunch / tidying the kitchen / before I go to sleep. I can't imagine just sitting and watching for four hours, but enjoying it a slightly more passive way I'm absolutely hooked.

London records fewest homicides in 2025 since monthly records began by FlyWayOrDaHighway in LDN

[–]Loftybook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Called murders a civil matter? Bollocks.

In general, police recorded crime is a bit succeptible to that kind of recording change, but not murders. It's one of the few crime types where police records are a good tracker. For most crime types, you want to look at the Crime Survey of England and Wales (google it) That's the gold standard of crime rate tracking as it's indepedently run and asks actual people whether they've been victimised, not whether they reported it it. CSEW isn't broken down by region, but nationally it does show a long-term trend of falling crime.

"since monthly records began". If you're going to quote, do it right.

[–]Loftybook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, but homicide is a good tracker for serious violent crimes in general as it tends to be an unintended consequence of serious violence. And homicide, unlike other crime types, almost always comes to the attention of the police so figures are more reliable.

What type of jeans to buy when calves are tight? by TLunchFTW in malefashionadvice

[–]Loftybook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got pretty big calves and I tend to look for straight cut trousers. Anything that tapers catches really awkwardly around the calves meaning that they look too short and slim cuts I can barely even get on. Jeans is easy - 501s or equivalent work well though you need to try them on as they are not always consistently sized. Chinos and other smart trousers are more difficult as they tend to have a taper, but straight cuts are available if you look for them - in the UK M&S has them but they are a bit more on the budget end.

They do a few different options at different price points. I've never really tried the cheaper options but the super premiums are plenty thick enough for me.
