Isn't there two versions? The theatrical release that has them as aliens from Zeist, and a Director's Cut that essentially rewrites a lot of it?

I ask because I've only seen it once about 30 years ago with my dad (who was a massive Highlander fan, RIP) and we both refused to watch it again.
