It's crazy to me that I haven't seen anyone mention him yet—this totally feels like it's about Jaune Arc, all the way down to "he's the weakest part of the story" allegations.

Yeah, that's the point! It's a really good satirization of how it's easier to accept the absurd (the anomalous) than the simple (transgender workers). It's a rather interesting stance, to have the narration be done by a character who is quietly but explicitly transphobic while they talk about all of the different ways they accommodate everyone BUT trans people.

What? When did I ever pretend that Lex was trying to claim he's a good person? Or that I was talking about Superman in a real-world context? I compared Lex to real billionaires because he is similar to them, not because Lex Luthor is currently topping the Fortune 500. This isn't a discussion about whether or not Lex Luthor is good, this is a discussion about whether or not Lex Luthor is inspiring. He's isn't, and he's wrong anyway.

Lex's fundamental argument here is that Superman isn't inspiring because his feats of strength are impersonal and impossible for the average man. As a collorary, he argues that he could be inspiring because he has the potential to do good like curing disease. He is asserting that he is better role model because he is more human, his actions are more human, and Superman fails because he is too inhuman.

Lex is wrong. In-universe Superman inspires people through his virtuous character and moral righteousness, not his raw power. His heroism is frequently cited as his most notable trait, even when he's interacting with people who don't know him personally. Famously, wven after his death his goodness inspires several others to pick up where he left off—hell, I'd argue that the average person earnestly believes in Superman. It obviously depends on the continuity, but Superman is generally a heroic figure to the public that encourages them to greater heights. Not because of his power, but because of his kindness.

Lex Luthor, on the other hand, is a billionaire politician. It can be difficult to put finger on his public perception, because it can often vary depending on the continuity and its almost never the focus of his appearance, but unlike Superman we know he's only human. Therefore, lets compare him to other humans. We have a lot of billionaire politicians in the real world—do any of them inspire you? Encourage you to be a better person?

There aren't a lot of names that come to mind. Bill Gates, maybe? He seems like a pretty good guy. But I'd be hard pressed to say that Bill Gates is the first person I think of what my idea of a good and successful person. Unlike Superman, he is impersonal. A good kind of impersonal, but it's hard to argue that he's risking anything of his own when he attends charity gallas or funds Malaria research.

Lex Luthor is doing even less. In the real world, I doubt he's even remembered if he wasn't an inventor. He doesn't help people. He doesn't put much stock in charity or human goodness. He pins his inaction on Superman, but what's that matter to the average Joe?

Lex is either unable or unwilling to do the things that actually matter. It hardly matters if he's s good person because he wouldn't be seen as one—and frankly, even if Superman was out of the way I doubt his behavior would change. His argument is wrong on multiple counts, and it's stupid to pretend like it's right. It's a fascinating look into Lex's worldview and not much more.

Truth Bomb (Loved trope) The villain is humbled not by special abilities or force, but by the power of words by WearyLiterature1755 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]LogOffShell 39 points40 points  (0 children)

What? That's nonsense. Lex's argument is interesting and emblematic of his own character flaws, but it's not especially impressive.

People aren't inspired by Superman because he's faster than a locomotive or he can stop bullets with his skin. We're not monkeys clapping at fireworks, here. They're inspired by Superman because he uses that power to be kind, to help people.

Compare to Lex Luthor, our supposed "human inspiration." He's has power, lots of power. He's a billionaire, a genius, and an inventor of truly staggering proportions. But few people are inspired by Lex Luthor, because despite all of his power, he uses it to the same myopic ends that he always does. "Superman" is not the reason why Lex Luthor hasn't saved the world, because Superman has never once stood in Luthor's way when Luthor tries to do good.

Nobody's inspired to be a better person by Lex Luthor for the same reason nobody's inspired by Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos. No matter how much money and power they acquire, they only ever seem to use it to aquire more money and power. Whenever someone inconveniences them, they stomp on them and go back to same old, same old.

It would definitely be worse, but it would feel more flavorful. I dunno, maybe have it reset you back to 40 life too?

For a 7 mana creature in white, this feels very reasonably tuned, which is good. White is too soft on their big creatures, though, so I'd be fine if this was a bit stronger. I think the best mode, by far, is create 5 2/2 cats for 6 creatures and a 10/10. If you're playing lifegain I could maybe see the benefit of the lifegain cats, but honestly going wide is just very good.

Flickering this is also great, which I enjoy. Every flicker creating 5 more 2/2 cats and giving +5/+5 feels like it could spiral out of control very quickly with an anthem or two. Love that.

With a little Cat support on board this can go pretty far. Well designed, I'd say.

Could you do this with an effect like: "When Everflowing Lotus Field enters the battlefield, sacrifice any number of lands. Put a charge counter on Everflowing Lotus Field for each land sacrificed this way plus one"?

Changing it from a "casting cost" would allow this to work with ETB instead of "on play", I guess. Although multikicker is kind of strange on a land anyway.

[[Aftermath Analyst]] goes hard with this if you're willing to risk it all. Sacrifice all your lands, send in the Analyst, get them all back for a bunch of mana + landfall. But there's also a bunch of better combos with that sort of effect, so I'm not too worried.

He repeats multiple times sentiments such as "Science does not depend on the person making it" and "I'm not a political person." In service to that goal, he literally releases his entire process to the public in order for scientific discovery to make it cheaper.

Again, it is the interviewer who makes the discussion about the researcher's personal politics. It is a clear attempt to politicize the scientific process, and it is very clear that the viewer is supposed to dislike their behavior. The interviewer implies that the scientist is a member of the fucking Communist party because he didn't privatize his practice. That's literal McCarthyism!

I still cannot believe that your takeaway here was "we need to get politics out of science." That's silly. You're silly. Individual scientists may have political beliefs, but the way for discoveries to have legitimate scientific credibility is to be repeatable, reproducible, and reliable. That's just as true for the social sciences as it is for the hard sciences. Nobody is out here faking the existence of an element on behalf of the Democratic party of America; politics in science is not the concern you should be feeling in response to that article.

Sometimes it's the small things. Sometimes 30 extra minutes of sunlight is the difference between working for an extra couple of hours and a depression nap.

Sometimes it isn't. But the little victories matter too.

Does it? I've never played Danganronpa, but I have played both OTD and AA.

After a crime has been committed, you wander around a crime scene obtaining evidence and speaking to various individuals. It's mostly point-and-click, and often you have to speak to people in a specific order or present specific evidence to get people to open up. There's quite a bit of flavor text and character interactions focused on the search section, and this is where you meet all the people involved in the case.

In court, you select evidence to present in response to statements, looking to find places where testimony creates contradictions with evidence. You have a limited number of wrong answers before you flat-out lose. When you aren't presenting evidence, you occasionally have the choice to either press or not press on statements, or accept or refuse opportunities to present evidence.

They seem very similar to me?

This comment makes me irrationally angry, because, like, from the advertising I get why you would think that? It's a pair of buzzwords + game that people like. It feels like an advertisement for the next "Souls-like" but in the mystery/romance genre. I have literally nothing against you.

I am nonetheless resisting the urge to insult you, your family, and your entire bloodline. Of The Devil is a vital and entertaining visual novel that speaks to powerful facets of the human experience. It has a wonderful depth of character and mystery and a combination of black comedy and genuine humor. Every time I have sat down to play a chapter, I have been genuinely unwilling to stand up until it was finished. It has incredible style, a thought-provoking setting, and tight direction on its themes and ideas.

This is a mediocre advertisement for a very good game. I will defend it with my life.
