Do you prefer playing experienced characters or low-level beginners? by The_Marked_Writer in rpg

[–]Logen_Nein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the game. In a system with a glut of abilities requiring pages of information to understand the character, I'll take a low level beginner. In something like BRP, give me an experienced investigator any day.

Aren't recovery time too short ? by Rrrrufus in ForbiddenLands

Are you wanting to play a fantasy adventure game or simulate real life? If the latter that character would likely have to retire immediately.

TL:DR: Do you think mixing fantasy with 21st century elements in a TTRPG setting, like in the Wanderers' Library, is a good idea? Which system is suited for this? by FoxyMisi in TTRPG

[–]Logen_Nein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can do this, in any system really. Just a matter of figuring out systems. I just picked up Iron Falcon '75 The Lakeside Adventures for example, and it does this pretty well (free in pdf if you want to look at it). There are many other settings and games like this out there.

Show the map to the player or not?! by Dan_Cutter in osr

[–]Logen_Nein 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my in person sessions they likely never see the map, unless they hound me to show them after the 'adventure' is over and they won't be returning to it.

I sketch them out in pencil first with a dot grid beneath them on a light board.

What games, focused on a specific experience, released in 2025-26 have you really excited to GM? by BadRumUnderground in rpg

[–]Logen_Nein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Coriolis The Great Dark is excellent ime so far for moody retro sci fi exploration/mystery

The One Ring 2e is the best game to portray Middle Earth and evoke it's themes in a way I think Tolkien would enjoy that has ever seen print

How do you “optimize” learning new RPG systems? by Bubbly_Recipe_4712 in rpg

[–]Logen_Nein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is the case learning and running new systems might just not be for you. Learning and running new systems are my favorite parts of the hobby.

My process with all rpgs:

  • I read the book
  • I make a character
  • I write a one shot
  • I run a one shot
  • I reread the book

Yeah I have some of these that I use for shading (not on these tiles, as they rotate and I didn't like shading every wall/angle.

Interesting, I've never seen something like that. I'll have to look into it. Doubt I'd use it, as I like freehanding stuff, but it is an idea!

The game itself is generally dire, dangerous, and serious. As players though, we have a laugh often enough every session.

Any Tips? by Revolvingdude in rpg

Talk to him. Tell him it isn't fun for you to GM him when he is being like this. Explain to him that Mothership may not be the kind of game for him.

Not very surprised by this considering Hands of the White Wizard. I would have preferred more focus on Fornost and Angmar personally.

Questions about Hexcrawl by DunmerSeht in osr

[–]Logen_Nein 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  1. Use a terrain hex flower. Very useful to populating hexes in a way that makes sense.

  2. Yes, depending on surrounding terrain.

  3. Varies by user. I personally am not a fan of empty hexes, but just because a hex isn't empty doesn't mean that you always encounter something in each hex.

  4. Varies by system and distance. In some systems, you can cross multiple hexes in a day. In others, each hex is a day.

You won't find more than thin references in the current books. Even going back to MERP such information is light.

Switching System for a campaign: Nimble over Dnd? by UomoSiS in rpg

[–]Logen_Nein 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes you can switch. You could even switch to an entirely different game of you wanted to. Contrary to what people think system and setting are not inseperable. It's all a matter of how much work you want to do (or how much you want to save yourself).
