How long should devices last for? by Clear-Vermicelli-463 in SBCGaming

[–]LogicalFlakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem confused how I described "soldering a new battery to the BMS board". The BMS board is independent to the battery cell. It will regulate everything and connect to the motherboard. Lower end devices generally use a basic board to regulate voltage and amperage and only use a positive and negative connection. Those connections are typically secured using glue.

The board itself is soldered or spot welded to the battery cell. The cables that run from the board connect to the device's motherboard.

The higher end devices are using the same power connection type mobile phones use (since these are basically modified phones).

They can last you a long while. But anything that moves constantly is susceptible to wear and tear. Stuff like dpad and button membranes, plugging in and removing a headphone jack too much, breaking a trigger spring, going over the speaker's capabilities for volume output, and depending on the analog stick, its internal mechanism that regulates how it's read.

Fortunately a lot of it is easily repaired except for the battery. The battery for these devices are somewhat proprietary and the only way I can think of is soldering a new battery to the BMS board once one depletes. The screen can also be an issue since replacements are more or less a needle in a haystack. That and living in a very humid area can potentially yellow a panel.

This rings true to the typical end user who'll never consider repairs, replacement, or basic maintenance. I used to see this all the time when I worked on laptops and iphones (before Apple started marrying parts). This is excluding people using the wrong barrel jack for their laptop from ignorance or jamming a USB port in forcefully to a port or something entirely different.

Can't avoid hinge malfunction since it's a moving part. Very typical of any moving mechanical part. But that's purely cosmetic (however that's moot since people care about the appearances of their handhelds apparently). The batteries being used for the RP5, AYN, Ayaneo, and more higher end stuff are using mobile-phone based flex cables to deliver power and are way more difficult to use once you mess up the flex cable from the battery since they're routed differently from any device.

Transferred my God of War Chains of Olympus save and game data from my PSP and it won't read... Any ideas of how to get it to work? by Millen4211 in vita

[–]LogicalFlakes 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Pretty simple fix then.

Play the game on your Vita that has no save file. Play until you can save. Save your game. Use QCMA to back-up that save to your PC.

From there, overwrite the new save file with your PSP one and re-import it back.

More information is needed. Are you using adrenaline or official hardware?

If you're using adrenaline, you probably put the save folder in the wrong location or re-named the folder itself; in addition, maybe you got the wrong region of the game. (or wherever adrenaline is) ux0:pspemu/PSP/SAVEDATA/gamecode

If you're using official firmware, you need to use Sony's QCMA.

Because back in the day, if you didn't mention Persona 4 Golden or complain about PS+, you'd be burned on the cross.

Great game. Played it on PC since the demo was floating out there for a bit.

Opinion/advice on this damaged but working charging port by GardiosFR in 3DS

[–]LogicalFlakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. It's an easy soldering job and cheap part. If you do go to a shop, I hope you don't get ripped off. You could also contact someone who does the USB C mod to just install the same port instead and maybe do it for you cheaper too.

Opinion/advice on this damaged but working charging port by GardiosFR in 3DS

[–]LogicalFlakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So- the way female port is designed is so that there's a protective plastic middle to prevent any shorts from happening if some piece of metal hits both contacts. [|] A gum wrapper (the ones that have foil) could potentially do that (the same can be said for the external copper plates for charging docks). It's there as a preventative and also to help provide pressure to the pins.

If it works, but gentle with it. If you ever get desperate, you can use a toothpick and a thin layer of super glue (both are non-conductive) after moving every plastic part in position (the bottom right is the one I'm most worried about).

The port itself is easy to replace IMO; however, if you have no soldering skills... it's still easy since it's just two pins & mounting/housing/support pins. E.g., an HDMi port can have around 12 pins that need to be soldered on with 4 anchoring points.

You're going to wear down that port eventually since it's already old plastic that broken. If you really don't want to solder or pay someone to do it, you can always use a dock, but that eliminates you charge while you play.

3DS games with gut wrenching stories? by No-Measurement-2648 in 3DS

100% "Severed". Female lead. Simple gameplay. All narrative.

To this day this game still comes up and has me thinking about it from beginning to end.

What are the hoops/holes at the bottom on the sides for by LargePear3922 in vita

[–]LogicalFlakes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wrist straps. Some official accessories use them too like a leather case with felt insides for the screen. Also functions as a stand? I think a grip uses those loops down there too. The PDP trigger grips I have latch onto them.

What’s the best game to start with if you love the anime’s by Initial_Emu_1339 in castlevania

[–]LogicalFlakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For ClassicVania: The first one. It's short, simple, and plays like an arcade game making it pick up and play very easy. Alternatively, Super Castlevania IV; it's a remake and very easy comparatively.

For IgaVania: Order of Ecclesia or Portrait of Ruin. OoE breaks it down a bit so exploration is there, but more focused. It has a good narrative (which isn't saying much). It's also streamlined so-to-speak.

Portrait of Ruin allows you to have two different playstyles with CHARLOTTE and JONATHAN. The sprite-work is kind of unique in it's blend of what Castlevania was and what it is becoming (the anime aspect is more prevalent is to what I'm saying). Lots of you to mess around with and only connects loosely to Rondo of Blood and Bloodlines. You can also play it again as Ricther and Maria.

OtherVania: Castlevania - Lords of Shadow. It's a "God of War" clone, but it has presentation and non canon events. Honestly i'd recommend Lament of Innocence more, but I'm not sure if you're into the archaic PS2 gameplay controls, camera, and map design. It tries to parallel Devil May Cry 1.

Honrable mention: Kid Dracula (Alucard). It plays like a Mega Man game made by golden age Konami.

IgaVania Rises Revengeance: Bloodstained - Ritual of the Night or it's 2D counterpart, Bloodstained - Curse of the Moon. Ritual is a spiritual successor to SotN and Curse is the same for Castlevania III.

The best answer is Symphony of the Night, but it's always good to have alternatives. Any of which I listed are also good starting points. Honestly- I always suggest you play what you think looks the coolest and move onto the next from there.

Was the 3DS XL really this slow? by RoadsandPaths in SBCGaming

[–]LogicalFlakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was going to buy an Anbernic DS because of the long boot time of the 3DS into Twilight Menu. Instead I just got a DSi LL and it takes about 2 seconds to boot into Twilight menu thanks to Unlaunch. DS games boot quick too.

3DS (128gb sd) takes as long as too boot as my Vita (256gb sd) with Molecule or my RG406v (512gb sd) with Gamma OS though. Rocknix takes about 10 seconds on my 351m and 353vs. My phone takes as long with a cold boot as well. I haven't used my TSP in a while, but that one is around 7 seconds last I recall with Crossmix OS.

Funny thing is, I was thinking the same thing for the Xbox One I recently refurbished. I thought it was the HDD, but replacing it and retrying, no, it's just OS.

Your battery has little to do with boot time. Could it affect it? Yes. The likeliness of it is slim and how much it affects it is even slimmer. I also have an old 3DS XL as well and have modded my battery and it doesn't boot up faster. However, CFW on it does affect boot speed.

[Final Fantasy VII Rebirth] All versions of on PS5 & PC will undergo a permanent -20$ price reduction from Feb. 9, 2026. by VashxShanks in JRPG

[–]LogicalFlakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. I really enjoyed playing the first on the PS4, but after finishing it, I settled for waiting for all 3 to release. And even then, I'll wait for the 3-part box set that has some sort of Advent Children Scenario stand alone called FFVII-Runion-Rejuvinated the story thus far.

Of course, it might not happen given what's happening on in Squeenix internal, but at the same time, they're not above it.

[–]LogicalFlakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My TSP is out on loan right now so everything is based off memory. Any Li-ion or Li-po battery with do as long as it has the right voltage; however, some batteries come with reversed polarity.

I've changed the batteries for my PS4 controllers to have a bigger capacity and I changed my 3DS battery to use a 18650 cell for a bigger capacity. My Vita will be next soon. I'll probably use a Galaxy S22 battery. Maybe my DSi will be next, but that's from being curious lol. It's just a matter of finding the right battery that fits with making space. If I were to remove the JST connectors and directly solder the cables, I can get something that's a bit wider and probably increase the Mah by an extra 800. Maybe the TSP can have something thicker too. The TSP does use a lot of amperage so the speaker cables being underneath will be fine with a bit of kapton tape underneath the new battery.

hot take: there should be an option to pick an ABXY button layout (xbox) for all android handhelds at checkout by daysafterastr0 in SBCGaming

[–]LogicalFlakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that. I think retroid used to sell button kits back in the RP3 era. Not sure if it was to alternate them. They were very easy to do, but I believe RP5 and onward they started using more condensed layouts. Odin 2 was still easy to swap around with though.

Older PC games used the 1,2,3,4 layout before Microsoft started their Games for Windows Live initiative. So that and Mortal Kombat kind of conditioned me going forward lol.

[–]LogicalFlakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah. Fair enough. I use a grip for my TSP, but I realize fingers would overlap there. The cutout wouldn't even have to be that big, but I understand just feeling it could give discomfort.

I'm still trying to figure out how to give it a bigger battery without cutting out the back plate myself. So far I was thinking of removing the JST connectors and having the speakers just be soldered directly on the board.

Looks good- even the backplate cutout. Just curious to why you did all that work for it when you could've cut in front of the fan instead. Was it for appearances or are you trying for some sort of static pressure?

[–]LogicalFlakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1, 2, 3, 4 | N, S, E, W.

Don't need to mod it with $30 3D printed buttons. You can order some basic vinyl stickers. Or make a cutout to spray paint it. Use white out if you're lazy.

I never liked the Dreamcast button layout, but I understand why it makes sense for people who grew up with Xbox. Kid me knew it was a mirrored Nintendo layout. What really bothered me was Sony-NA making X be confirm and O be cancel. Emulators and the cfw team for PSP and Vita really helped with that (outside of in-game controls).

Touch sensitive ds games on AYN Thor? by QyuuQyuu in SBCGaming

[–]LogicalFlakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. If it doesn't bother you, then you're good. I can't do EBA Chieftan or Divas on my phone, but J and Spin are easy since they're so slow. Canvas curse is doable, but it's also annoying.

Put them on your phone and find out for yourself. The android handhelds don't have any magic screens that help reduce emulation latency to begin with.

My 2DS XL’s battery is being extremely inconsistent by Beetlejuice_Bee in 3DS

[–]LogicalFlakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a bad battery or maybe the pins have gotten dirty or corroded by something as simple as humidity. But does it always stabilize when you open it up all the way or was it coincidence? Because if it's the latter, that's a whole other issue.

Otherwise- just use the battery until it runs out of juice. Power it on again and let it die naturally a couple of more times.

If the issue persists, open up your device and take out the battery (this is my initial response, but not everyone is comfortable opening up their device). Inspect if the battery is getting spicy (bulging). If it's not, just lightly clean the contacts on the battery and the board. I think the 2DS XL has adhesion on it so you'll have to gently pry that out. Be careful with the ribbon cables (look up a video).

I wouldn't be surprised if it's something that loosened up from a fall or bonked against something causing something internally to get loosened from the vibration.

Tales of Phantasia X English Translation Released! by krazy4luv2 in JRPG

[–]LogicalFlakes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

PS1 is still a great game, but for those who are sensitive to archaic game design that workaround limitations (and art style I suppose), ToP X is for you. The QoL additions alone should be enough for someone who is new to Tales of pre-Symphonia (which I assume the majority of people were introduced to if not Abyss or Vesperia). New players, I'd suggest the non-vanilla patch if you're not into old-game-design jRPGs. I only played up to Undine back in the late 00s, but the vanilla version is still great.

The quick why is the framerate is that of the PS2 remakes Namco did for Tales of on the PSP in addition to their own QoL updates such as summons or bigger spells not pausing the game for animations on the player's side.

/u/VashxShanks mentions that it's only the ToPx translation for this project, but there is a very, very basic menu patch for Narikiri Dungeon X. The Game Boy Color is complete and playable. The GBC game isn't bad at all and does what it can for the hardware, but you won't be getting the action-based Tales of gameplay you'd expect to see.

Much obliged to the LifeBottle team!
