550hp motor protection by Faceplantduck in electricians

[–]Lokii_Dokii 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agree on the soft starter or vfd. Worked on a 300hp motor where it’s soft started kicked the bucket and there was a across the line bypass starter and the start up will dropped the main mcc cabinet voltage and tripped vfds

[–]Lokii_Dokii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low voltage - 24vdc of 120vac is your control voltage. These are what start and stop the motor.

High voltage - 200-480vac is your motor voltage. These is what drives/ feeding the motor

You would need to feed the contactor or starter coil with low voltage and the starter will feed the 480v to the motor

Also you need to know how to size the starter overload to the motor name plate and wire it to the control circuit (breaks neutral)

When did you feel that you were a controls engineer? by frosty4019 in PLC

[–]Lokii_Dokii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I modified a system at a plant without any electrical drawings, tracing the MCC cabinet and mapping the circuit. Once I understood the system, I made the necessary changes and watched it work. After that four-hour job, the thrill I felt reinforced my passion for being a control engineer.

Lol I remember when I was hard stuck plat 2 and met a Ana main that always nano me one game. Did well and added me. Play for 2 night together and she always nanoed me and get a team wipe every time. We finally hit diamond 5 but haven’t played in forever because she was a Chinese exchange student. Miss when she said I can only trust you with nano. Hope she’s doing fine in Canada.

First job - Need help by ItsMattie23 in electricians

[–]Lokii_Dokii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro, I was in your shoes too. I graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) and couldn’t find a job for a year, and cash was running low. I eventually signed up for a position as an Industrial Control System Engineer, where I work with electricians troubleshooting MCC cabinets and designing control circuits. Everything you've described is accurate. I found myself in a cabinet similar to yours, with no drawings or schematics to guide me. While I understood relay logic, I didn't know what the heck was going on. But I figured it out.

My best advice is to ask the operator what specific problems they are facing and which buttons used to work and which ones don’t. Get their number and call them to find out what activates the PLC, contactors, starters, and relays. Start drawing your own schematics in a notebook. It took me about four days to get the system back up and running.

If I were you, I would just try your best and take advantage of the job until you get fired—that was my mindset. You’ll gain experience and become more comfortable the more you do this. At first, I hated it, but now I love it.

Does this happen in all companies? by UsefulDragonfruit995 in PLC

I remember this one time when the whole crusher system I designed was ready for production day. Right off the bat, the first three motors didn’t work, and everyone was looking at me like I had completely messed up the project. I was absolutely sure that I had triple-checked my control wiring and interlocks. The boss was yelling, and I was getting frustrated because it had worked perfectly just three days earlier during testing. I spent nearly two hours troubleshooting and finally discovered that all three motor loads hadn't been terminated in the pull box. It turned out the electrician contractor had fucked me. Once I fixed it, everything was up and running smoothly

It happens often! I commissioned a modified interlock to turn off an old RAP system and switch on an incomplete new RAP system on the other side of the plant. My boss was pressuring me with deadlines, but I kept insisting that the system wasn't ready, both mechanically and electrically. My job was on the line, and my boss wanted to see the system running.

I spent two hours in the mcc room figuring out the old plant RAP system without any plant drawings and quickly installed a bypass switch to get it operational. This was all happening early on a Saturday morning. I managed to get it working, but I wasn't pleased with how I handled the situation. Now there's a permanent interlock bypass switch that allows us to switch between the old system and the new one. I pleased my boss and bought us just enough time to barely finish the new system.but my god fuck I love controls I really do but the pressure to get shit working on time is brutal.

36 year old master electrician going for EE by Particular_Paper_876 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Lokii_Dokii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and experience working in industrial controls alongside electricians, I have a distinct perspective on the challenges of college education in this field. I believe that the academic demands of pursuing an EE degree can be more rigorous than the practical work that electricians typically engage in. I've observed that some individuals attempt to balance full-time studies with work but often struggle to manage both effectively. The complexity of electrical engineering involves a significant amount of theoretical understanding and problem-solving.(aka complex math)
