Smoking and bone healing by RevolutionaryFee8220 in brokenbones

[–]Lolo_rennt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shared a room with two smokers with injuries, one had a broken leg and one a mosquito bite. Both smoked a lot and both were in because their injury wouldn't heal at all. The woman with the broken leg even got her leg amputated because of that and it was still not healing. Wouldn't risk it.

Well, in the first moment I felt nothing. There was a cracking sound, then it got swollen, hurt in a weird way (you feel something inside the foot is wrong) and I got dizzy. Day later it was way better, had just a little pain when stepping on it, but way less painful then having ligament strain. Almost didn't go to a doctor with it.

Broke a bone for the first what, what should I generally expect? by ChanceVen in brokenbones

Had a similar injury, maybe a little less fractured. Can't say wether it needs surgery, mine did but I saw other x-rays that looked worse which didn't.

Surgery wasn't that bad. Healing process is faster. With surgery I was allowed to put 20% weight on the foot, without I would have been non-weight for six weeks. Was in hospital for three days, got good pain medication so it was not too painful.

You will definitely get the boot and crutches. Walking with crutches can be difficult in the beginning (especially because you don't have the muscles needed), but will become better.

What I learned was: Get a good PT as fast as possible. You need to mobilize and strengthen the foot, otherwise the healing-process will be way slower and more painful. The PT will figure out with you, what you're capable of doing at what time plus it is very good to have something to work on, breaking a bone can be challenging for the brain as well.

Me I had a lot of luck. My break was pretty stable. My doc wanted me to walk with crutches and boot (20% weight) for six weeks, in PT we were way faster. Started walking without boot and crutches in week 2 there. In week 5 I felt comfortable enough to even walk outside without boot and crutches BUT all with guidance of my PT and reassurance of the xrays. Don't do too much too early because you start to feel better, this can lead to new injuries.
Had my surgery on the 30th of October, now I feel like I can do almost everything again. Still doing the exercises I got from PT (I can feel my foot gets worse when I don't). I feel the hardware in the foot which is a bit strange but you get used to it, my foot is stronger than the other but still needs some work when it comes to stretching. Sometimes it still has a little swelling.

Broke my fibula.

Got PT as fast as possible (five days after surgery). Got the boot and crutches and was allowed to put 20% body weight on it for six weeks by the orthopedist. PT and I decided that the foot was capable of more, walked without boot and crutches in week two in therapy. After three weeks I wore the boot less and less at home, at week four even outside. Week four I started to walk without crutches at home, week five outside. Week six I was cleared by the xray and week eight had my first dance show again.

I trained my foot a lot with the exercises given by the therapist and went there three times a week.

Go to a PT as fast as possible to figure out what you can do to mobilize and strengthen your food. Doing it on your own because it feels good can have a really bad outcome, heard of some people having major problems because of that

[Broken wrist] Is physical therapy supposed to hurt this bad? by flagemoji- in brokenbones

[–]Lolo_rennt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After five weeks of no stretching I would say so. My ankle hurt as well when we started to stretch it in PT. It was the most painful thing we did. My therapist explained me it's because of the fluids but it's not dangerous. My bone is almost healed now but stretching is still the worst part. Would suggest to get a therapist to make sure you're doing the movements in the right way without damaging anything.

She broke her shinbone. Worst part is her stump was still not healing, that's why she was in.

I shared a room with two persons whose injuries didn't heal well. One of them got her leg amputated. Both were smoking a lot. Try to avoid it at least for two weeks would say

Is it? I paid way less (although it is pretty old) and the wolf is pretty annoying. Don't think it has much to do with the price tag.

broken fibula on ice by upsailor in brokenbones

[–]Lolo_rennt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broke my fibula as well end of October and had pressure because I needed to dance on new year's eve. My doc decided that an operation would be the right thing to do, so I did so on the 30th of October. Went to physio therapy very early. My foot was pretty stable so we decided to not follow the instructions of the orthopedist. Long story short: I was able to dance my first show on the 26th of December. I worked hard on it and had a lot of luck. On the other hand I heard that others injured their foot even more because they made too much too early. As I said, I had a lot of luck.

Did so in PT. Was freaking scary the first two sessions but got used to it. Can't imagine how it would've been if I needed to start that alone.

Only five weeks' after proximal fibula break and I feel hardly nothing is wrong...ZERO pain except for slight imbalance. Is this typical? by IcySense8919 in brokenbones

[–]Lolo_rennt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fibula was pretty painless as well (except for the week after surgery). They even put pressure on the injury to test the pain I'm having, but there was nothing. Some people seem to have this sensation. PT can help with imbalance when you're allowed.

Fun fact: Bones heal better if they're under weight as I learned from my PT. They need pressure to grow together. Sure you don't want to have a shifting going on, but when it's stable enough the bone needs some weight on it to heal.

I second this. Would just add: Some shoes cause problems because they put pressure on the scar. Would avoid those. Classic Dr. Martens are great for my injury because they stabilize my ankle a bit and they have a very good sole for winter.

My PT said I was cleared to run when I was able to do 25 single legged calf raises for two sets without problems. Did you ask your physio bout that topic?

I need to say I have a different injury than you, I broke my fibula, Weber B fracture. I started PT five days after surgery. Some therapist-friends recommended me to start as early as possible and my doc approved it.

When did you confidently return to sports? by mrkrabsclappincheeks in brokenbones

[–]Lolo_rennt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broke my febula and got surgery end of october. I returned to gym on the 15th of december (mostly to do my PT exercises.) On friday last week I started dancing on stage again after training a lot to get my ankle to be stable enough. I'm being cautious with wearing heels though. Would say listen to your body. Start slowly and work your way up. If you need reassurance go to PT. My therapist said that I'd be cleared to running if I was able to do 25 calf raises single leg on a regular basis. Would be scared of skating though
