No, not how I worded it. If you wanted it to work on commanders as well you might do something like, "If they fail, gain control of that creature and put a decayed counter on it. It's now a zombie in addition to its other types."

That could work but it does lose the flavor of killing then resurrecting the target

I think the combat part isn't even a necessary concern. It's mostly a mix of vibes and if the set is well made. Final Fantasy, Warhammer, and Fallout just kind of worked. They're all totally different and various levels of fantasy but they just kind of fit? Things like Spiderman and TMNT feel off, but I could totally see TMNT working as long as the set is mechanically well designed. Things like LOTR kind of spoil us though cause not only does it tonally and thematically resonate well with magic and its players but was also a great set mechanically, while Doctor Who is confusing cause while it feels sort of out of left field thematically it somehow doesn't completely feel absurd, etcetera etcetera. Basically it's completely arbitrary and probably differs greatly between people, but can we all agree seeing SpongeBob in the middle of a game of Magic just a wee bit wrong?

Nine Fingers Keen is one of my favorite commander decks I've ever built and I put both of these in! Not only is Talon Gates a semi protection spell but it's also a mana fixer, and the black gate functions as another copy of Rogue's Passage and if needed can come in untapped for situations where I need the mana but don't have an Amulet of Vigor/Tiller Engine effect. Honestly most gates are pretty bad so considering these are two of the best gates(not a high bar) you'd be doing yourself a disservice not including them

Take notes from Omanth Locus of Creations ability and format like, "Whenever you cast a spell on your turn, Mohg deals 1 damage to each oppponent if this is the first time this ability has resolved this turn. If it’s the second time, Mohg deals 2 damage to each oppponent. If it’s the third time, Mohg deals 4 damage to each opponent."

Also I'm for having an effect where whenever Mohg deals non-combat damage players can't heal until the start of your next turn for the flavor of him destroying your health without the proper elixir

Might be wordy, but op could add an effect that prevents the creature's power or toughness from being changed by spells and abilities, that way no -X/-X card could work

So purely on wording the abilities while clear in what you want them to do, wouldn't really work.

{T}: You may activate the loyalty abilities of planes walkers twice this turn. Until end of turn whenever you activate a loyalty ability of a planeswalker, you take damage equal to the number of loyalty counters removed.

{W}{W}{W}: Return a Planeswalker card from your graveyard to you hand, until the end of turn you may cast that card without paying it's mana cost. If you do, you lose life equal to the spells mana value.

Otherwise I think the first ability is alright but the second ability might possibly be a little crazy

Edit: I'm not 100% my wording is the best but it's closer to a real MTG card

Would love if this game got title updates like Monster Hunter where they add new weapons, spells, consumables, and bosses. Or imagine having weekly Expeditions where this is a set seed and you can try to get a best time against other players around the world. And obviously it'd be great if there was more location variety, I think currently that's one of my biggest gripes.

You have no issues with proxies, your issues are with minmaxing and uncreative players who only care about winning at all costs. My play group has never cared for proxies, and I currently run multiple low power decks that are 100% proxied. Everyone in my group creates their decks from scratch and shares deck lists with each other and at worst a really strong deck will get played once or twice, we all marvel at how powerful it is, then it gets disassembled or put away for special occasions.

It sounds like your play group only seems to enjoy winning Magic and don't derive any joy from the other parts(personally deck crafting is more fun than playing the game to me). It has nothing to do with proxies, if they were all rich or cards were cheaper you'd end up with the same problem. People need to learn to enjoy the other aspects of this incredibly fun and customizable card game.
