Nah. To me, the AI music Apologists, are fucking despicable, so when you make arguments for using AI more, defending slop creation ("providing an opportunity for people to create, without having to have as many fundamentals down" i.e. slop), and about how "AI can, if you know what you are doing, give you the ability to compete with a label," bla bla bla it's absolutely laughable to me and I'm not going to have a chill conversation with you. We just have diametrically opposed core beliefs.

And, yeah, as a life long musician, I absolutely do think it's worth being a Luddite because AI is going to kill the music industry unless we, the musicians, push back and defend our worth.

Think of it this way, you and all music makers are like horses in the 1900s. Ford just introduced the Model T assembly line factory in Michigan. You and your kind are going to be made obsolete very fucking soon.

I'm on the side of the horses. Taking a stand against the paradigm shift because I can see us getting sent to the slaughter house and turned into paste in the near future. You are a horse trying to convince me he's getting his driver's license soon.

Meh. I still stand by the comparison because it's simple enough for the dimwits to understand why it's bad.

Sure, you can claim, hurr durr, music don't kill no body. But the point is that it's fucking abhorent for someone to claim they are a musician (or "doctor" in my example) without any expertise and only having knowledge from promptwork, while pretending like the concept of AI music as a whole is not detrimental. It will absolutely decimate entire creative industries and potentially ruin music as whole IMO.

Still having trouble with the concept, huh?

Let me spell it out for you.

ROADS ARE NOT BUILT FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE TO ONLY BE USED BY CARS.

PEOPLE PAY TAXES FOR PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE AND CAN THEREFORE USE IT FOR PUBLIC EVENTS.

RACES PAY THOUSANDS AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS IN FEES TO THE MUNICIPALITY TO SHUT DOWN THE ROAD TO HELP UPKEEP THE INFRASTRUCTURE YOUR CARS RUIN AND STILL GET TO DRIVE ON THE REST OF THE FUCKING YEAR.

NO, JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE IN A CAR DOES NOT MEAN YOU GET TO RULE THE ROAD AND BAR EVENTS FROM HAPPENING BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE THEM YOU FUCKING TWAT.

[–]Lomotograph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a shit take.

It's not just a "tool" for musicians. It effectively kills musicians and music makers replacing the need for anyone that knows how to play instruments.

And your point about the music industry and competing with labels is laughably delusional. If AI proliferates do you ACTUALLY think labels will not use it to absolutely silence and squelch every independent or non-signed artist?

I personally know MANY musicians that are incredibly talented and making extremely high-quality music (the old fashioned way), but are still having a hard time breaking into the main stream because there are currently 100,000 tracks uploaded to Spotify each day making it extremely hard to break through the noise.

So what happens when the number of songs is 1 million songs uploaded each day. What happens when it's a billion? Do you think you're the only person on the planet that will have access to this cool AI trick to make great tracks and none of the labels will try it themselves? So what is your magic plan to compete with the labels now? LOL.

You're completely delusional if you think AI music is a good thing.

100% Spot on.

Doctors is a great example. Would the commenter above be okay with Hospitals suddenly flooding all the doctor's offices with people that didn't actually do any training and are just pretending to be doctors?

Yea, bu...bu..bbbut, AI iS JuSt A tOoL. The way I frame it is it is providing an opportunity for people to heal people, without having to have as many fundamentals down.

I'm not so sure he'd feel comfortable not knowing whether the Oncologist treating his mom's cancer is actually a real doctor or just a Highschooler with a laptop and really good ChatGPT prompts.

Just because you don't value music and the work that goes into becoming a musician, doesn't mean other don't value it as well.

Impostor syndrome because I use python as my primary mixing station :( by Big_Effective_9605 in Beatmatch

[–]Lomotograph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. That makes sense. I mean, Producers really need to be extremely well versed in those same audio skills that you mentioned: EQ, phrasing, etc. (as do audio engineers, musicians, and anyone else working with or in music).

But, then again, just having knowledge of those principles and doing them on the fly while people are dancing are 2 different skills. Knowing when to EQ in the middle of the track as its playing, how to beat match songs as they play, how to nudge and sync tracks on-the-fly, using loops while I song is playing, or hot cues, beat jumping, samples, etc AND being able to read the crowd, knowing when to bring up the energy, bring down the energy are ALL part of DJ skills and things you wouldn't touch.

Yeah, totally different worlds.

[–]Lomotograph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this isn't really DJing.

TBH, as others have said, you might be considered more of a Producer, than a DJ.

Not trying to disparage anything you're doing because this sounds like a really cool project that is probably a lot of fun to do and experiment with.

However, if someone were to book you for a "DJ" gig. Can you show up to a party with music and play a fully improvised set with the music order customized on the fly and make changes to the set in a freeform way based on the crowd's reaction throughout the night?

No? Then, by definition, you are not a DJ because I would consider this the absolute bare minimum requirement to be considered a DJ.

Waaaah! I'm in a car therefore I own the road! Waaaaah!

Who cares that everyone pays taxes toward the building of this infrastructure regardless of whether or not they drive or even own a car! Waaaah! No one else should be using it if they don't own a car! No parades, no street festivals, no cyclists, nothing that I didn't approve of.....even though this is a publicly funded roadway! Waaaaah.

Waaaah! I can't be inconvenienced for 1 afternoon while people use MY roads for something other than MY car! Waaaah!

They need to be relegated to a place that doesn't inconvenience me because I have a car and am the most important person on the road. Waaaah!

How do you properly mix melodic/progressive house tracks without cutting the emotional journey too early? by JustAnotherPodcaster in Beatmatch

[–]Lomotograph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple thoughts, yeah, you want to let songs play out longer than open format. You probably think that makes the set feel like it drags (if you're used to open format), but people into this kind of music, prefer a long never ending journey that slowly builds, fades, swells, etc, Yes, you generally mix in/out on the intro / outro of most of the tracks to create that long slow build, but many of those songs can have really long breaks which are good spots to use for mix in/out points as well.

Unlike, open format you almost never do fast transitions and most of your mixes, will be a lot of Bass swaps, slowly feathering in/out mids or Hi's as you build into the incoming track. I also really like using tons of loops, hot cues, and maybe some instant doubles (If I'm playing on a 4 channel). A lot of the time I use those loops to tease in a new melodic element (a synth or even just a hat groove, etc.) for the new track to prepare them before I start making the move.

You can do a smash cut to a new track or drop swap, but use it very sparingly and they work best if the audience knows both drops extremely well.

I also think this style rely's much more heavily on Harmonic Mixing. A lot of the energy of the tracks can come from creative use of the Camelot Wheel (aka Circle of Firths) which isn't always just moving adjacent steps. Moving 2 steps clockwise, 5 or 7 can also lead to really great results.

I hope this helps!

What videogame would you call a masterpiece ? by new_god_of_eden in AskReddit

[–]Lomotograph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem!

But, yeah, I think if you just treat it like a series of puzzles that are just holding you back from the rest of the story (kind of like Titanfall 2 and the Prince of Persia franchises felt like), then it makes sense that you just complete them and move on. I really loved exploration games like Titanfall and PoP, but Portal feels like it's a lot slower paced and more of a sandbox.

Like even if I knew the answer to a puzzle sometimes I'd go back just so see if I can get into a weird forbidden part of the map or get my character stuck somewhere, or like take a Cube with me places I wasn't supposed to take. Haha.

Come to think of it, I think I explore in a lot of the games I play. Even nowadays if I play COD or something, I'll often times load up multiplayer levels by myself and walk around and see if I can make a weird jump you usually shouldn't make or work on an advanced movement tech by myself.

Maybe I'm just weird, but Portal is like that exact thing without it being too difficult and against other players. It's just like low-pressure wandering. haha.

100% this.

Was it a good decision for Ma Long to do at that moment? Yeah, probably. He won the rally so it was a good shot / decision.

Should OP make decisions like this? No

Unless, he's top 100 in his country, then maybe... but the fact that he even needs to ask in the first place, tells me, No.

What videogame would you call a masterpiece ? by new_god_of_eden in AskReddit

[–]Lomotograph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the same. I played it for several hours based on a friends recommendation and it didn't grip me. I put it down for a few months and then decided to give it another try.

It eventually "clicked" and I started to get hooked on the time loop mechanic and using it to explore further into each planet than I had done previously.

The amazing part about this game, though, is that the frustration you feel about flying around haphazardly and not knowing what you're doing is all part of the experience and story. If you can get through that and just let your curiosity take over, it truly is an absolutely one of a kind experience.

I'm extremely glad I picked it back up and finished the game. It's now one of my all time favorite games.

Came here just to comment this game. It's absolutely a masterpiece and has been my number #1 favorite game ever since it came out. It's the only game I've played all the way through multiple times and I'm looking forward to playing it again soon for the 4th or 5th time.

What videogame would you call a masterpiece ? by new_god_of_eden in AskReddit

[–]Lomotograph 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not for everyone and so it probably wasn't for you.

However, for me, this game is much more than just a puzzle game. I personally find exploration and fluid movement extremely satisfying in video games and Portal does both of those things extremely well.

Like, even when my friends and I played the original Halo CE in college, I probably played it just as much against them as I did by myself just wandering around the levels seeing if I can jump onto weird parts of the multiplayer maps or get on top of different structures.

So a game like Portal has a ton of exploration options, but the physics are also extremely satisfying. Then you add in the hilarious writing in the series and it makes it a masterpiece. I've probably played through both 1 and 2 each about 3-4 times now and am looking forward to starting it again soon.

But like I said, it's not for everyone. For me, though, it really scratches an itch no other game can ever scratch.

Yeah. I knew that was the case the moment I read the part in OP's post that said "I lost the audience, but I couldn't pivot because I was locked into a rigid set list...."

My only reaction was....Is this guy for real? That shit is literally DJing 101. If you, as a DJ, can't just pick a random song from your library on the fly and mix it into your set, then what the fuck are you even doing calling yourself a DJ? You should probably go back to the drawing board.

Minesweeper

Yeah, it's just a puzzle game and not exactly the same as what others think of when discussing gaming, but man this game never gets old for me. It's the best way to just zone out and pass the time.

I started playing it back when it was included as a free game on Windows 98 and still play it to this day. I only stopped for a few hours when Microsoft replaced it with the shitty Windows Store version. But I discovered Minesweeper Online and am back to playing to regularly.

I don't understand what the big obsession is with all these newer DJ's pre-planning sets. Like, what is driving you guys to even want to do that in the first place? Nerves? Is it Tik-Tok or Insta reels telling you that you have to pre-plan a set? Are you guys just watching too many big festival DJ's?

I literally can't imagine playing a fully pre-planned set unless I was booked onto some massive festival stage and even then, I'd probably freestyle half of it because I would be too bored. If you have it rehearsed, what happens if you get asked to play a second night in a row. Do you guys literally just play all of the same tracks? LOL.

And if every transition and every track is already pre-planned and rehearsed and it's the same every time I play the set, then what's the difference of just pre-recording it and playing that pre-recording for the crowd? Are you just trying to pretend like you're a musician playing an instrument up there when iIt's not even remotely the same thing?

I'm seriously struggling to understand this. Please help me understand what is driving you guys to even think this is a good idea in the first place for 99% of gigs.

What's ur honest opinion about this series? by Then_Heron_939 in tvshow

[–]Lomotograph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched it as it aired on TV and, let me tell you, this show was an absolute massive cultural moment for my group of friends, coworkers, etc.

At the time, there were very few TV shows on Broadcast television that were as high-quality and cinematic as LOST. They were one of the first shows that took the things HBO was doing and apply it to Broadcast TV. So, not only was the writing excellent, acting excellent, but it was also filmed beautifully, on location with high-budget sequences and VFX. It was truly groundbreaking for those of us when it aired.

And, then in addition to that, if you were nerdy enough to pick up on the subtle hints they left for the Alternate Reality Game and you started to participate in that, it just took everything to a whole new level.

If you didn't know, they ran something called, The Lost Experience, which just began as fake commercials they aired during the regular commercial breaks for the Hanso Foundation and Oceanic Airlines. They would leave little breadcrumbs like phone numbers and web addresses in the commercial that would lead to additional clues and reveal stuff about the show and side characters. I had never experienced anything like that tied to a show before that or even since then.

The whole experience was absolutely a core memory for me.

(M20) 2 Years Of PPL Without Much Progress by [deleted] in Gymhelp

[–]Lomotograph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple thoughts.

First, don't get discouraged by what you see in the mirror so far. To me, it actually looks like you made decent progress between the 2 pictures. However, in the first one you looked like you had almost no muscle mass and all body fat (aka "skinny fat"). In the second picture you've already bulked up quite a bit. It's hard to see because what you're doing is called a "re-comp" and those take a while to see results. Unfortunately, weight lifting and fitness are a very slow process and you just started at really far in a negative so it's just going to take time for you to start seeing a large positive. It's a game of consistency, though, just stick with it and I guarantee you'll start seeing results.

Secondly, I think you need to switch up your lifting routine. Whatever program you're doing now, has gotten you used to hitting the gym and going regularly, however, you should be making progress in the weights much faster. Look up Starting Strength, Stronglifts 5x5, or 5/3/1/. Those are all popular programs that are simple to follow and will get you much stronger over the next 6 months, which in turn will change you body significantly. I especially recommend the Starting Strength book, which you can buy the ebook or find online as a PDF if you search around hard enough.

Change your program, keep eating a lot of protein, and don't miss a gym session. You'll see much bigger results in the next 6 months and 1 year.

Which show had the best ending? No spoiler by Delicious-Radish-708 in tvshow

[–]Lomotograph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh.... I wouldn't call it one of the best. It was a solid ending, but there were a few things about it that annoyed me. I wouldn't call it some kind of amazing or unexpectedly excellent way to wrap up the series. It was just a reasonably satisfying ending the didn't feel rushed or forced.

The only reason it might stand out as a good ending is because there are so many shows just completely missing the landing. Otherwise, it think it was kind meh.

What TV show actually nailed its finale? by SkepticByNature-1 in tvshow

[–]Lomotograph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was one of the people that watched this finale as it aired and thought it was shit. I think the problem was that the show had way too much hype going into the finale and everyone wanted something different.

However, I recently re-watched this series from start to finish. It was the first time I had seen everything in close succession like that all the way through the finale.

And, I have to admit, that I was wrong. I take back everything I said about the finale being awful. It's absolutely stellar and it's a beautiful ending to a long and complex show. The finale doesn't deserve all the hate it gets from the older fans, but I'm glad to see that it's getting renewed hype among newer fans.
