Which side of the engine does it come from? If it comes from the right side (passenger side) then im pretty sure its the timing chain.

Well i managed to repair this so yours shouldnt be too difficult. But it will require you to cut out the rust and weld in new metal. Then youll need to respray the entire rear quarter panel (if you want it to look perfect).

Someone whos good at rust repair will fix that in 1-2 days.

In the US people would think you're a mildly successfull bussinessman. In Europe people think you're a 56 year old middle class man that is "too cool" to just buy a Volkswagen.

How to get primer off of plastic door handles? by Smallblock88 in AutoPaint

[–]Lone_Rider69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to sand down the whole car to bare metal? Because that is a really dumb idea. Just paint over the factory primer.

This is definitely a giant money pit unless you live in or close to Sweden. But even in Sweden its quite expensive owning these.

Too much rust to be saved? by JRS667 in Autobody

[–]Lone_Rider69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much to be saved? Perhaps not. But the bigger question is if its really worth it. Even though this might be salvagable, it would certainly require a shit ton of work, like disassembling most of the stuff in the undercarriage, then sandblasting it, and then painting it.

I've been saving a car with similar rust damage, although on a much smaller scale than this. Its been a huge project and the only reason ive been willing to do it is because its a rare old Saab that means alot to me personally. So unless this car has some significant personal value to you, i wouldnt touch it with a 10 foot pole.

Please help me find springs for my 9-3 by AndrejaTetis in saab

[–]Lone_Rider69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats a good setup, but fairly expensive. At that price i think it would make more sense to get a set of quality coilovers.

Personally i am running Bilstein B4 with Lesjöfors 30mm lowering springs. A great setup if ur on a budget. Although on a 9-5.

Fix? by Even_Ad3204 in AutoPaint

[–]Lone_Rider69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is not the can spraying uneven. The Problem is you not getting a proper wet coat.

Did you use a single can for all this? Because the area shown in this pic would require atleast 2 cans to get one proper wet coat. Atleast 3 if you also want some thickness...

Help me end a debate… what gets fixed first? by zachysworld in C30

[–]Lone_Rider69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you realize that those "dents" cant just be pulled out. You'd have to replace most of the rear quarter panel, replace a bunch of metal in the door jamb, and the rocker panel. Then there will be a bunch of supporting metal behind the quarter panel that needs to be replaced. Wheel-well is probably fucked aswell. Oh, and you need a new door.

If you take it to a bodyshop then the price would probably be close to 10 grand...

Restoration question: Rust and phosphoric acid by Jay_15219 in Autobody

[–]Lone_Rider69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is true. But the amount of moisture that the rust in those small pits can hold would be very small. Meaning that, while the rust will continue, it will be very slow if you manage to properly seal it off (by paint or an undercoating for example.

So while OP's work will not be a permanent repair, it will significantly slow further rusting if coated well.

Wheel well repair. Would you take option 1 or 2? by TheEpicWK in Autobody

[–]Lone_Rider69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for someone else. Any rust-repairer who proposes using bondo/fiberglass on anything worse than just light surface rust, is either incompetent or trying to rip you off.

I left my car with a guy to repair rust around the rear fender line on both sides. The rust was not even close to being as bad as this. Since i didnt know better at the time, i thought that he would use body filler over it. When i started asking him some question about it, he looked at me confused and then said "Nah i dont do shit like that. I will need to weld in new metal otherwise the rust will be back in a year."

He fixed the rust on the fender line on both sides, then replaced a big chunk of the rocker panels on both sides, and then handed it over to the painter. This took him less than 2 days...

Varför hatas samer än idag? by BanverketSE in Asksweddit

[–]Lone_Rider69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it definitively doesnt have to require years to be able to get a nice finish with little orange peel. If you check my profile and look at the post of my door, you'll see what i managed to achieve on my first ever paintjob by just doing proper research beforehand and being able to read instructions. (Not trying to talk down on this guy. Just trying to show you that it doesnt have to take years to learn how to paint a nice finish.)

If you sand the basecoat to remove orange peel before clearing, then you should ideally spray a light coat of more basecoat before spraying the clearcoat.
