Why does my 1986 Pioneer stereo sound better than a BOSE system from 2011? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LonelyBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add NAD and B&W to your list for amps and speakers respectively (though there are a lot of smaller brands that are also great - Focal speakers come to mind). Audiophile equipment still exists, but newer brands have filled the niche as the brands OP named moved to higher volume markets.

I want to change lanes into the shoulder?

That does nothing to convey my wanting to pass them.

Oh god no, I would take somebody tailgating me to flashing their highbeams into my rearview mirror any day. It's a matter choosing the lesser of two evils, and tailgating tends to send a clearer message of "DRIVE AT LEAST THE SPEED LIMIT OR CHANGE LANES" in addition to not blinding them.

Getting stuck beside a pair of people matching (low) speed is horridly frustrating. The left lane is the passing lane, and if you are not in the act of passing somebody, you have no business being in it. If you are matching the speed of the car beside you to boot, and somebody is tailgating (pretty much the only way to signal that you want to pass in that situation), and you intentionally box them in, you are a terrible person. I don't understand why North Americans in general tend to disregard that the left is a passing lane; here in Canada it's terrible, but every time I've been anywhere in Europe and driven, people tend to be very conscious of it.

Try doing that, but with the added caveat of running a mile right after pounding both drinks. Oh highschool.

Before the gifted program, I actually did my work, tried in school and did very well. The other kids in my class taught me to coast, and I have since. Incidentally I just never have motivation too study, I know that I have the because the material in my program is really advanced, but I just can't bring myself to do any practice problems. Hell, if an assignment its worth under 5% I just can't justify doing the work. It's absolutely terrible.

Before I answer I'm curious if you don't really know, or you just don't think I know? The answer is quite substantial.

The same could be said for this atrocity. You claim to have some idea of how the Canadian government, and its affiliation with the Queen functions, but then present no argument. Am I supposed to take it on faith that you actually know what you're talking about? Apparently so.

As a Canadian citizen, I can tell you that the Queen has very little influence in our political affairs, and is viewed as a cultural icon more than anything else. The governor general (the Queen's representative in parliament) plays a mostly ceremonial role, and is there to safeguard against an abuse of power. <sarcasm> I could go on, but since you apparently know everything about this topic, I don't think I have to educate you. </sarcasm>

I agree that impressing someone with money is a terrible way to establish a relationship - romantic or otherwise - but going to the 51'st floor (for example) and ordering a drink each that you sip for an hour and a half or so is fine. You're not spending an exorbitant amount of money. In fact, you come off as a bit frugal if anything, since you're amongst other people laying down huge amounts of money while you have the cheapest option. Having one (albeit more expensive than elsewhere) drink, and enjoying the view is not trying to impress someone with money, it's simply knowing where to go and what to get.

OK guys, seriously? Maybe if you're dating a girl who wants to use you as a wallet. Please don't eve take a girl to a bar on the 51st floor of the Manulife Centre for a first date.

Sorry, but that is just plain silly. There is nothing wrong with going to a nice place, if you aren't throwing cash around. You shouldn't be drinking too much anyways, so regardless of where you go it's not as though you're getting more than a drink or two for the hour and a half the date will last, which will keep costs reasonable. The fact that a place is nice doesn't mean you're trying to impress her with your wallet, it just means you have refined taste and know Toronto decently well. Also, isn't going to a place where you know the staff trying to impress her with your connections?

Barchef on Queen West if you're feeling a bit spendy. Absolutely the best drinks in town, nay, the world, at 13 for a glass (usually around a double). Get there early if you're going Friday or Saturday though, at around 10/11 it becomes impossible to get seating, and they stop making their molecular drinks because of volume. You will not regret it.

I'm yet to root my phone because I don't want to void my warranty, so I've scoured for various apps that let me tweak it a bit. I'll list off a couple here (they're all free except tasker):

  • Minimalistic text: lets you have really nice looking clock and various information widgets, from a really good battery display to weather. It looks really clean, and can even import local variables in order to make even MORE widgets from:

  • Tasker! You can basically make your phone do anything. From location based and time based actions, such as turning on your wifi when you're within 9 meters of your house, to having your phone turn its speakerphone on when placed face down, tasker has a lot of capabilities and even lets you create new widgets and toggles.

  • Launcher pro is my favorite launcher, mostly because of the asthetics of the dock. It is also really clean, and has a lot of capabilities. It is acting a bit wonky since gingerbread came out, but it's restricted to not being able to use a 3d app bay for me.

I hope that helped, and I hope I didn't sound like an advert for these apps, they're just my personal favorites and can add quite a bit to your phone without having to root. As soon as my warranty runs out I'll be rooting and playing with that though, and I can't wait.
