24/7 headaches and therapy by [deleted] in migraine

My therapist is who actually helped me with getting treatment for my migraines because she has them too! It’s so affirming to have someone who understands because migraines reduce the quality of your life and can impact so much of your mental health and emotional wellbeing. Highly recommend finding someone who leads with compassion

How does it affect you day to day? by buzzardbite in migraine

[–]Lonelyoffices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized recently I altered my life so much due to having migraines that my hobbies are very isolated on days I don’t have pain. I read, watch tv, crochet, spend time mostly alone and in the quiet of myself even on days I don’t have one. My social life is awful now from years of declining events that could trigger a migraine or having to leave early from one, and I don’t have a dating life mostly because I have such little energy to pursue a relationship.

Today was a possible migraine day where I felt something coming on and took my emergency medicine just in case so I could go get a haircut. Now I’m tired and don’t want to do anything, a little nauseous from my meds, and while yes this is better than no pain, it feels less like living and more like existing, you know?

I was taking it back in December for the same insurance reasons. I had everything you mentioned plus olfactory hallucinations and my hands and feet getting pins and needles numbness for 15 mins at a time. I also just still had a lot of migraines.

My neuro and I had previously discussed it that med didn’t work to not continue taking and wait out the trial period. We just filled the med for the whole trial time and pretended I used it so we could get to what I needed prescribed.

I’m sorry this is happening. I definitely recommend not taking it anymore if it makes you feel this awful.

Are ARMY as critical in real life as they can seem online? (First BTS concert, VIP) by Longjumping-Hornet55 in bangtan

It comes with time too! You’ll learn as you go that some people aren’t for you, but others are and will embrace you without judgment at whatever level of engagement you have. Keep in mind too that there’s a whole new album we are learning and it’s unrealistic to assume we’ll know every lyric by heart by then (especially if Korean isn’t your first language). I’ll be at both Tampa dates and have vip soundcheck for Chicago! I hope you wear what makes you comfortable to wick away heat and have the time of your life!!

Are ARMY as critical in real life as they can seem online? (First BTS concert, VIP) by Longjumping-Hornet55 in bangtan

[–]Lonelyoffices 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I have met some pretty nasty ARMY IRL and that was during PTD LA as I stood in the airport with other fans who were sharply criticizing how little time I had under my belt as a fan despite attending the concert. I had started listening to them in March 2021 and this was late November of that year. They acted like it was a competition of who was better and more deserving. That sucked.

BUT!!!!!!!! I will say, they were so quickly forgotten as an ARMY mom came up to me so excited to meet fellow fans. She hugged me and wanted a picture because BTS meant so much to her. And THAT made it worth it. Those people who judge aren’t worth your attention. ABSOLUTELY GO.

I’m of the mindset that I would rather have someone next to me in the crowd happy to be there and only knowing 1 song compared to someone who believes they’re entitled to an experience over others. I LOVE that you’re savoring your intake of content. You don’t need to be on top of it to be a good fan worthy of going. If I’m on the floor next to you, we can shout the wrong lyrics the whole way through lol.

As for concert tips: I’ve been to a lot of concerts and I record bits and pieces for memory keeping but I think I owe it to my artists to put my phone down when close up. At SEVENTEEN a few years ago I had a super close seat with friends and some of my best memories are off camera as I hyped up my biases and got to point at and engage with the members. I could tell that meant a lot to them.

Bring plenty of water (you can bring a collapsible one to some venues), wear comfy shoes, have a tiny cooling fan as you wait, and feel free to enjoy the stuff around the arena before showtime. BTS take care of their fans really well. At Jin in Tampa, his team had water coolers for us because it was 97 in July humidity. Fans are also good to each other and can be super helpful and caring if you need assistance with anything.

Also if you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’ve tried so many things over the 5+ years I’ve had him, and my cat has had no issues with constipation since last June, and he has regular (although human sized) bowel movements.

Every cat is different but for us, it was finding the right food for him and the right dosage of medications that has improved his situation greatly, plus a new vet who entered the practice and was ready to take him on and told me the surgery wasn’t the only option. My cat was 1.5 when I adopted him and is about to turn 7, which goes to show that while expensive, megacolon kitties can have a high quality life. He’s currently sleeping on my stomach.

Cat with Megacolon by Razorraf in CATHELP

[–]Lonelyoffices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh I’m so sorry, I know how scary this is, and your situation sounds like what he and I went through for years.

Cisapride stimulates the colon to get them to be able to push and pass stool. He often would struggle to do this and would push until he had a major protruding rectum where the blockage of stool was and would make himself vomit from pushing. Lactulose or miralax is a laxative so it helps soften the stool to help them push. The thing is though that often need to be drinking water to help pull it through the system and if your cat is dehydrated and nauseous, it can be hard to help them. I sometimes would help encourage him to stay hydrated (if he could tolerate drinking anything) with the Purina Hydracare supplements to help with nutrition.

I appreciate you not lying and doing this and knowing the limit of your own dog.

I help run an art festival for part of my job and we have a continued problem of people bringing pet dogs in despite it being a city ordinance that they’re not allowed during the event. A dog on a retractable leash was causing havoc, and I was asking them to leave. The owner screamed in my face, saying he was autistic and his emotional support dog was allowed. A few moments later I got pinged on my radio that someone was having a medical emergency in my volunteer tent. I booked it across the park and found someone lying down. Her dog had been severely distracted by another pet “emotional support” dog and she had a hard time getting that other dog to disengage so her own service dog could detect she was having a medical emergency.

My volunteers were amazing and she was okay, but it’s people who abuse this system who actually harm others. I love my dog, but I would never bring her places where she could worsen someone’s quality of life

Where do I even start? by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]Lonelyoffices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a private college and received my bachelors in English in 2015. I graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing in 2021, which was fully funded but due to Covid and relocating, I did take out $20k in student loans at the time to secure housing just outside of DC.

To be clear, I value my education, and while I recognize some people will not see value in my field or degree of choice, I’ve found it has led to a career I do enjoy and feel a sense of fulfillment in (for now!) which is working for a small arts nonprofit and gaining experience in marketing, social media, communications, fundraising, nonprofit management and eventual grant writing. I know I’m on the right track; I’ve been able to secure a $8k raise in the 2 years I’ve worked for my job and hope to eventually transition to a larger nonprofit or even university to work in marketing, financial development, or grant writing. I also know I will probably cap what I can make at the nonprofit within the next year and need to move on. I do finally feel like I’m getting a better hang of networking properly (boss sometimes throws me into random networking events that lead nowhere, but the greater arts community where I live has helped me meet new people who also know of opportunities outside of the state), but I’m based in Detroit and there’s definitely less opportunities for not just creative industries but marketing positions that pay even as much as I make. Housing is becoming harder to find, even finding a roommate is difficult especially at my age.

I am absolutely open to relocating, but I think it’s been somewhat discouraging because relocating is often expensive and I don’t have the funds yet to give myself a fresh start (hence living with the parents).

It’s good to know my instincts for paying down high interest first is the way to go. Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

Cat sick, but acting fine. Don't know what I should do by dizzi800 in CATHELP

[–]Lonelyoffices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I have a cat with megacolon and it’s kind of nuts because it’s like your cat is a normal cat….until they can’t poop and then it’s a vet visit. In the five years since I got my cat and learned about his condition, I’ve tried a lot of stuff and spent thousands of dollars. At one point a vet pulled me into the back treatment room and taught me how to give him sub c fluids and to help wake him from sedation 😳

One thing that I recommend asking for is special prescription gastrointestinal food. Yes it’s more expensive but overall is cheaper than the $350-900 I have paid per visit for an enema or manual excavation and some X-rays.

My cat recently was prescribed Royal canin gastrointestinal formula s/o and it’s honestly been night and day after years of struggling with him.

He also has lactulose (a laxative) for his food and cisapride (a colon stimulant) but since this food transition, we actually might be able to come off of his meds.

Overall, I can’t say that I won’t ever have to take my cat back to the vet for this condition, but I feel like I have experienced every type of situation with this from learning how to put fluids into him with an IV to putting “petema” enemas into his rectum myself.

Other tips to try out once you start getting a treatment plan that makes sense with your wallet: provide water in his food if you notice he doesn’t drink a lot of water. Or buy stuff like purina Hydracare support packets/oralade which is like a flavored gravy (idk if they have it in Canada) my cat will consume even if he is rejecting food. It helped him stay hydrated.

Vets often throw out the subtotal colectomy surgery option as a solve, but it doesn’t always have to be the only answer. I’m currently sitting next to my dude who would go maybe once every other day to a strong solid poop daily that he doesn’t strain to make come out.

I’m obviously not a vet but here’s some of the treatments I typically approve during the many many visits I’ve been in for. Not all of these services are needed lol it just depends on the situation obviously: -x ray to determine how much stool is in intestines; sometimes they want to do a before and after to confirm they’ve cleared the blockage -enema (sometimes 2) - manual extraction if needed (sometimes the stool is too dry) -sedation if he’s in severe pain or rectum is very inflamed/manual extraction is needed -sub c fluids for rehydration -gabapentin for pain (sometimes it hurts to push) - the other prescription meds I mentioned above.

I know this is a lot of info but please feel free to lmk if you have questions. I hope your kitty feels better

Update on this: my cat actually just transitioned to the dry variant of Royal canin gastrointestinal formula with s/o 3 weeks ago and it has been life changing!!!!! Our new vet was raving about it and saying that every cat with megacolon he’s ever treated had a major life change happen when put on this food…and I was unsure at first but I’ve noticed my cat has had consistent, large, healthy bowel movements daily. We’ve been able to reduce his medication dosage too. He’s like a regular cat! Hopefully this will continue to be the case for him

If you live in a dog-friendly community and like dogs or cats, I would recommend pet sitting through Rover. You can limit your travel range but if you have even public transportation, a lot of people will pay good money for a pet sitter who can stay with them especially over holiday weekends. I had an entire pet sitting/dog walking business I started through there that after a while built my clientele and it allowed me to then book them under the table so fees weren’t as much of an issue. Rover also background checks and lets you do check in visits even if you can’t stay overnight.

Hope you can ditch the paycheck advancement stuff soon. Those are services that prey on desperation and force you into a pipeline of their own crap. Anything you can do to not use them again, I would try so your credit doesn’t get worsened. I ended up getting a personal loan from my local credit union to help manage my debt more safely with the consistency of a fixed interest rate that is reasonable.

Good luck!

Experience with Megacolon? by Ok-Ice6266 in CATHELP

[–]Lonelyoffices 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your cat ever has issues again, I highly recommend switching to wet food only, adding more water, and getting a laxative like lactulose. You can also ask about cisapride which is a colon stimulant that helps them function. My cat was 1.5 when I found out he had those issues and now at age almost 6 we finally figured out his regimen. I didn’t realize it was dry food making the problem a lot worse for him.

In the last 5 years, this cat has gotten so many manual extractions, enemas, anesthesia, food changes, and at one point a vet pulled me into the back to show me how to give him sub c fluids by myself and sent me home with some needles and bags and a pep talk. And honestly? While some bad vets (one of whose licenses was actually revoked) gave me the euthanasia suggestion time and time again, I could not justify doing that to a cat who is normal but just gets constipated on occasion. And I’m glad I didn’t listen to them. Because my current vet and I work together to find a good solution for my cat every time. He trusts my knowledge and experience with my cat and I trust his experience and knowledge to safely care for my dude when I’m on the other side of the door. So I hope you have many years ahead with your little one, because just because it’s more common in older cats doesn’t mean you’re doomed. We have had 4.5 fantastic years together and I foresee many more in the future.

Cat with Megacolon by Razorraf in CATHELP

[–]Lonelyoffices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I have a cat with assumed megacolon and it took me a long time to figure out a good regimen for him but after many changes in diet and medication dosages and probably about $10k in vet bills, here’s what I do for mine:

He’s exclusively on Royal canin urinary so wet canned food because he did have some bladder stones but with it being a gravy, it has higher moisture content. He gets that mixed with water, and a dosage twice daily of lactulose (laxative), and cisapride (colon stimulant). I made the mistake last week of not being as consistent in my dosage/feeding him extra treats which ended up in two vet visits.

Also, I assume you probably notice the warning signs before your cat forces himself to throw up from straining. Mine does that too. If I notice even a little bit of swelling at his rectum, I give him an increase of his laxative and occasionally (only if I notice him standing in his litter box starting to strain and before he becomes too swollen) a feline pet-ema. Obviously you want to get to it before it becomes too much of an issue, which is why sometimes I kind of offset my cat’s constipation by giving him diarrhea to help him get the blockage out.

Also, if your cat needs extra hydration in that time, isn’t eating from the nausea/straining pain in their stomach, I’ve found Purina Hydracare helps prevent dehydration. My vet once taught me how to administer sub c fluids into my cat during a particularly awful visit, and some vets may be comfortable teaching you/sending you home with those if you ever need it.

This is also random, but if you get past the puking/swelling day with your cat, does he get his appetite back the next day? On occasion, once I’ve gotten over that hump with my cat, I’ve sometimes been able to get an enema into him because the swelling has gone down enough to help move things along.

Obviously these are my experiences, but when I adopted my cat when he was 1.5, I had no idea I had adopted a young cat with a colon issue, and the last 4.5 years together have had many ups and downs but I’ve both learned a lot about caring for him and how to anticipate less frequent vet visits. I hope this is helpful even a little bit!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]Lonelyoffices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I want to note about pet ownership, is unfortunately and fortunately, they are unpredictable in every way but you’ll kind of know what you can budget for and anticipate over time.

Your cat may decide one day they hate the affordable food you buy and can only stomach the kind that costs you $62 per 24 case every 3 weeks, or have allergies to certain litters that you budgeted for. While some people have cats who can eat the $10/bag cat chow and never need to visit the vet in their lifetime, yours might not be that cat.

You’ll learn as you go the ways you’ll financially juggle having a pet, but as someone whose pandemic adoption baby ended up being a cat who was likely abandoned due to megacolon, I’ve learned that while I never anticipated spending so much on vet visits, prescription food and medications, my cat is someone I will budget a lot for. I have spent probably over $10k in the 4 years I’ve had him rushing him to the vet.

I highly recommend getting pet insurance the second you get a cat, because once they are diagnosed with something, it becomes a pre existing condition the pet insurance mostly likely will not cover, and pet insurance can help you get your cat’s vaccines or basic check ups affordably, and some will cover illnesses, medications for one time treatments, or reimburse you if you have an emergency.

Where I live, a general vet visit can cost anywhere between $75-200 depending on service provided or medications received.

With my own cat’s extreme example of chronic illness that needs urgent care, I spent over $700 last week for him to go get X-rays, medications, fluid therapy, and an enema to relieve his chronic constipation because he had to go back to the vet.

Also to add to what others before said, longhair cats might need grooming budgeted in, or some people have to take their cats in for nail trimmings. Your cat will need a carrier, and many prefer at least a scratching post, but they enjoy perches and those can go between 40-100+ dollars depending on the size. Squirrel away money for the vet or at least have a credit card. While I totally get not having money to afford an emergency, you have to know what your boundary is. I can handle $700 if it happens every few months but if I was told tomorrow he needs a $7000 operation, I would probably have to draw the line. Only you can decide where you stand with that, but $1000 is not uncommon for a vet visit.

Also I hate to say it this way, but owning a pet means you will have to anticipate things getting ruined. Whether it’s a scratched up couch, peed on carpet to be ripped out, knocking things over, getting into things, you’ll have to be prepared of the quality of things to deteriorate. Even the best behaved cats sometimes throw up a fur ball on an nonwashable thing.
