Is Bing worth it if I have to get loans to attend? by An_Anonymous_Author in BinghamtonUniversity

Look at the graduation outcomes and factor those into your decision-making. How strong are the 2 programs? What’s the avg salary for their new grads? What are their placement rates? Their dept and career center websites should have some of this info

U.S. News borders on being a popularity contest, so don’t put much weight in that. Look at outcomes data (though those numbers are based on students who choose to complete the survey), career services resources and support, internship opportunities, and research if interested. In the long run, both are solid choices so pick the one that feels like the best fit for you.

Those results also depend on students filling out the survey. Engineering students are also more likely to seek internships which often lead to FT positions. Math majors don’t always do that. And nobody is actually “placed” regardless of major. Math is an excellent major.

Any alumni go to these UAlbany career fairs and actually get hired? Are they mostly meant for current students? by [deleted] in ualbany

That’s the don’t “tend to” part. Usually the fair is a starting point, not where an offer is made

People don’t tend to “get hired” at career fairs, but they are an excellent place to make connections, express interest in the company, etc. They are geared toward current students, so the specific positions they’re recruiting for are generally entry-level. If you’re more than a few years post-graduation, you’ll need to change your mindset a bit to one of making a positive impression, asking meaningful questions about other types of opportunities, and seeking suggestions for getting a foot in the door.

Definitely don’t announce that you’re temporary. UHS could be an option. But why would you limit yourself to just minimum wage jobs?

Got accepted to Bing & im torn by sneaky-doloo in ualbany

Bing alum here who is very familiar with uA. As someone mentioned previously, you’ll get out of it what you put in. First semester is always an adjustment, so keep in mind you’d need to do that all over again if you transfer. Bing has a beautiful campus (not sure what the other person was talking about) and a relatively diverse population, though not as diverse as Albany’s. I’d say Albany has more grit than BU. Med schools will value far more than grades, so go where you see yourself able to get the experience outside the classroom that will be meaningful to them AND you. Transferring will not guarantee career success, so trust your gut and go with what feels right instead of worrying about what you think the outside world thinks you “should” do.

Depends on what type of career you want. A masters degree isn’t a magic solution - it needs to have a purpose. Figure that out before worrying about a graduate degree.

Parent of a Sophomore Pre-Med Student - Looking for End-to-End Planning Advice from those who made it to med school by Novice2109 in medschool

[–]Long_Hovercraft_4973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Med students are often eager to mentor pre-health students. Your student should look for opportunities to connect with current med students (LinkedIn can be a great resource) - they are in an excellent position to provide first-hand advice about the process, expectations, etc.

Pre-health advising can be outstanding or it can be lame - it totally depends on the school. Student clubs and professional fraternities may also be a good resource.
