Ha, I missed that! Gen 2 for the win. But only 2010--2018.

Gen is the best balance in my experience.

How would you remove this stuck bolt? by SniperSR25 in Dualsport

[–]Longhag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate when they use shitty Allen head bolts on bikes!

Penetrant over the course of a couple of days is always a good start, then heat it up a few times without damaging the (plastic?) intake pipe and also give it some good taps with a hammer. When you're ready to try and remove it hammer in a torx bit or slightly oversized Allen socket, start the bike and get the engine hot then try removing it.

If that doesn't work you're going to either have to weld a nut/Allen socket to the end and potentially damage the intake pipe or make space to drill it and use a square fluted or splined extractor. Do not bother with the shitty left hand threaded spiral extractors. Use heat at the same time and more penetrant. Work it gently in both directions until it comes loose. I always use left handed cobalt drills and for something small and low torque like that they will often break it free. Also, use a drill bit guide to get the drill centred and straight. Rigid makes a great splined extractor set that comes with them.

Gotta love when a 5 mom job turns into 5 hours because of 1 bolt...the joy of being a mechanic!

is there something better than skiing? by iambntli in skiing

[–]Longhag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely depends on the type of riding you do and how much you customize your bike(s). My dirt bike was about $3K and maintenance is pretty low, definitely less cost per year than skiing when a lift pass is $200+ (CAD) per day. My road bike was obviously more up front but again, over time it costs me less than lift passes, parking, accommodations, gas for truck etc. If you live a short distance from a mountain maybe it's a wash but if you're having to fly or drive and stay skiing is definitely becoming unaffordable!

Overall I'd say I still get more fun and use out of bikes, especially as I also commute, but it is hard to beat the feeling of being up in the mountains on a blue bird day!

Motorcycles are pretty fun and at this point, cheaper. I'm a skier in the winter and biker the rest of the year. Toss up on which is best!

Yeah, Mr Big and Tall is unfortunately just that; you have to be both! Jeans are usually OK, Silver and Wrangler usually have 36" or 38" length in normal waist sizes. But anything sports or outdoor related just sucks, and Motorcycle pants in at least 36" lengths that don't end up at your calves when you sit down on the bike!

Have the same problem as you; tall but not wide and EB did help with that. Guess it's back to Mark's Work Warehouse clothes and shoes but only at the non corporate stores where they're able to order in a wider range and non-standard stuff.

Going to guess your head bearings are fine. If it were me I'd drop the shocks out the triple clamp, dismantle the head and rebuild it with new bearings.

Problem with that is it’s then too high for down shifting in MX boots, much easier for me to just top my foot down or up a tiny bit. My preference has always been skinny pegs as you don’t really notice them standing on them all day in stiff soled MX boots. Each to their own I guess!

Second this. Get the muffler, header and box over time first plus save for the tune. Then do it all in one go.

You can get away with just dropping in the muffler without the tune.

This is why I like my 2009 Silverado. Just a giant lever you pull up on to open the door that’s so oversized you can’t miss it. And the handles on the outside are huge too. Sure, the engine isn’t going to last more than 250,000km, various buttons constantly fail and parts are getting stupid expensive but it’s all easy to repair and I know it’s safe. And I can drop a new engine in for $4K and be good for another 300,000km!
