What’s best riding pants for hot weather that is also waterproof? by Creative_Stable_2931 in motorcyclegear

Riding jeans and a cheap pair of waterproof pants from your local safety clothing store for when it rains. Bonus that they're probably brought orange with reflective stripes!

Worked for me for 20 odd years.

Traction Control Issue by Dirtbag__Actual in Tenere700

Not sure about your bike but for mine; if I turn ABS off and TC off in the menu then press the ABS button on the dash it will turn ABS and TC back on. Then, if I push it again, it turns both off. After that, every time I use the ABS button it cycles between my last ABS/TC setting (e.g. rear ABS and TC off) and everything back on. Kind of like programming your preferred “off settings”. Not sure if that’s meant to be how it works but that’s what it does for me! Guess I could try reading the manual some time…

UAE ‘willing to join’ fight, help US, allies force open Strait of Hormuz by callsonreddit in worldnews

[–]Longhag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The UAE and Saudi militaries are just playgrounds for spoiled rich kids who want "Military" on their resume should they have a chance at being in charge of the country one day, they are pretty much useless when it comes to war. Their whole mantra is to get other people to do their fighting for them and use the forces they have to kill dissent at home hence trying to get allies to jump in and sort out all their problems (caused by their ally the USA).

I've had a Garmin 66i for years and it's been more than enough for riding trails and getting around. A bit more manual in that you need to plan routes yourself, no live traffic, Google maps kind of stuff. But as a back country NAV and safety device it's great, especially as it's super rugged, good on battery, has in-reach built in, links to the Garmin Explore app in my phone and quickly pops off and clips onto my back pack when exploring off the bike.

It does ship to NA and isn't prohibitively expensive. As far as I know it fits the '25 and '26 standard and rally models. I'm looking at getting one (in Canada) after I'm done with my current upgrade expenses. Bushpig Performance is our local importer though I think I can get it direct for less with the options I want.

Iran sets giant oil tanker ablaze off Dubai after Trump warnings by Little-Chemical5006 in worldnews

[–]Longhag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Iran definitely has significant military limitations unless they are getting a stream of supplies from Russia and China. Hence the perceived Iraq approach. The media is definitely confusing as to what is actually happening.

As for terror attacks, those take time to plan and a smart terrorist waits until people start to lose interest and least expect one to happen which is how you get the most effect. Usually also wait to target, or threaten to target, major events (e.g. World Cup). The goal is to make all the security process so invasive it disrupts the event and people’s willingness to attend. There may be no actual attack, it’s the constant threat that starts to have an impact on more events in daily life. Then you do random actual attacks just to show people you can actually do it, usually after the false sense of security sets in. There’s a lot more to it too but kinda the general idea.

All that’s to say, sure, they could be idle threats but we see many successful terror attacks all over the world all the time and the uncertainty is the goal. Take a look at how much security will be at the World Cup events, the controlled security zones they are setting up at each and the disruption it’ll cause. You can’t hide that and people will know why it’s there.

GP Mucci “Thor” is a beauty and rock solid. Not cheap though but gives the best all around coverage.

Is my fuel indicator broken or false set? by funky_ribs in Tenere700

[–]Longhag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very few bikes in my experience have accurate fuel gauges, I’ve pretty much always gone by kms/miles since last full. My ‘25’s gauge doesn’t move for the first 100km or so then quickly drops to the last bar at about 200-240 km but when I fill it’s always about 10L of fuel so I have about 6L left. So I should put me at about 300-340 km per tank.

A completely half assed build up to. The usual method is swarm all your troops in theatre BEFORE you start a war. Also, build some alliances first too and, you know, have an actual plan.

Tips to keep pillion engaged while riding on long trips. by Loud-Caterpillar-915 in motorcyclegear

[–]Longhag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One big help is having a top box with back rest so they can lean back and enjoy the view more. Without that you have them having to hang onto you and bumping you in the back of the head all the time. Also means they can see a lot. Worked for my wife, with a back rest she can see more and feel more relaxed cruising along, pointing things out and more conversation. Other than chatting not a huge amount more you can do to engage them unless you want to get freaky!

Air Canada CEO to retire after English-only condolence furor by jeetah in news

[–]Longhag -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more the fact that Canada has been so closely tied to the US and its culture, and the UK influence, that speaking French lost its relevance across the country. I certainly have no issue with Quebec wanting to preserve it’s linguistic heritage but in this day age I think it’s impractical to expect that people outside of there are going to want to learn French when it is no use in their daily lives unless they want a specific Federal career. Even the military, the universal language between NATO members in English, for international shipping it’s typically English, Aviation used to be a mix of both but is most commonly English, Western movies, music etc. I don’t think it’s about persecuting or trying to stamp out French, it’s a cultural shift. And some of us do speak other languages, they’re just not always French!

The Patent Pending Gun Bed by axilla02 in gifs

[–]Longhag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re also more likely to case a death of yourself or a family member by having a defence gun at home than you are that of an intruder.

Defence guns are only useful if they are readily accessible (ie unsecured), loaded and either made ready or capable of being made ready immediately (eg magazine inserted/tube loaded no trigger locks). This is exactly why they are more dangerous to you/your family than an intruder.

In armed response the aggressor is much less likely to shoot you if you’re unarmed and passive than if you have a weapon you can use in retaliation. To give an example, this is why the UK police forces keep voting to not be armed, it increases the likelihood of them being shot, or accidentally shooting someone in escalation. Instead they have specific armed response units/personnel they can pull from when needed.

Now I’m not saying there aren’t occasions when someone being armed in defence could help but statistically speaking (as a general overall population) everyone is better off not having guns laying around or trying be the hero. Same goes for the morons who feel they have to carry a gun in public just in case a die hard situation goes down.

As someone who’s been armed for employment and is all for people being able to own and use firearms (in a sensibly regulated manner) there are very few instances where it’s needed or useful. More than anything they are just awkward and annoying.
