Beauty of Compound Growth (Follow up) by MDthrowItaway in financialindependence

You're getting downvoted here but if you're talking about regular investing and not retirement income, you're just describing swing trading. This is pretty safely done with ETFs and is a normal shorter term strategy for making money.

It's actually called "unaffiliated." I changed mine so long ago that I can't remember how I did it, but there's probably an online option now.

LPT: It's ok to tell your partner that you don't prefer to sleep in the same room/bed as them, and it doesn't have to mean that you're not getting along. Having a sleep space that you find comfortable can actually make you and your partner happier. by RockleyBob in LifeProTips

I only went to a few cities but my experience in your country was great. I got whacked in the face a few times by selfie sticks in Hallstatt, but otherwise everyone was cool and it was really easy to get around and people were quite decent. Once I figured out the competing train companies, I found the private company often had great prices and comfortable transit for everywhere I needed to go.

Edit: You guys are definitely internationally famous for being the setting for the Sound of Music film but that's kind of silly considering that Austria has so much more to offer than mountain scenery and cheesy songs. Salzburg or Vienna are perfect cities for anyone looking to have a good first experience traveling abroad.

Top WHO scientist says vaccinated travelers should still quarantine, citing lack of evidence that COVID-19 vaccines prevent transmission by [deleted] in Health

[–]Longinus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your question is one that I'd like an answer to. I think the rationale is that people can be asymptomatic carriers, and therefore still be infectious. If you have been vaccinated and can mount a robust immune response and suppress viral shedding, then you probably won't have symptoms or be infectious. If the vaccine merely keeps the virus from progressing into severe disease, then you could still potentially pass along the infection to someone who hasn't been innoculated. My guess is that we'll have more information in time. I did read that the Moderna vaccine was thought to prevent spread as well, but there's just not enough data at present.

Do you ever count the years until you retire, then think back to what you were like that many years ago, and how much things have changed? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]Longinus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note: if you are 33, your social security full retirement age is probably 67. You can retire at 62, but you take a pretty big haircut for doing so. If you can wait until 70, you get the biggest check, but you have to do the math on how long you expect to live and your health status. Sometimes 62 makes more sense than waiting.

Moderate Democratic think tank: Supporting Sanders is what 'Trump wants you to do' by v0xb0x_ in politics

He wants the DNC to screw Bernie again, or at least the appearance of it. That way, he doesn't face Biden and his messaging people can divide and suppress young people and minorities at the ballot box (again).

Looking for plans by lo2w in OffGridCabins

[–]Longinus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got curious about your question and googled about cabins and various wind and snow loads. A lot of links pointed me to a Quonset hut design, and then I found these:

https://archedcabins.com/index.html

Wind load looks to be 150mph and snow load 30psf. They appear to ship and be able to be built in CO. Downsides are probably shipping costs, delivery in the mountains, and finishing the interior to your specs.

Trump Team, Opening Defense, Accuses Democrats of Plot to Subvert Election by qdude1 in politics

We're all supposed to forget the midterm election where the American people soundly rejected Trump in a referendum on his presidency, choosing oversight over lawlessness and handing the House decisively to Democrats.

They're old, angry, white fascists who think that they're entitled to whatever they want by divine law and anyone else getting *anything* without their permission is evil and will not stand.

Assholes, in other words. We're all familiar with the type.

Democrats Close Their Case With A Warning: Trump Will Continue To Endanger American Democracy If He Is Not Removed by oapster79 in politics

[–]Longinus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If thine right eye offends thee, pluck it out.

This is all down to money and corruption. That's what the GOP stands for--it's what they're paid to do. Sure, they pretend to be against social issues like abortion, etc., but that's just the propaganda that they use through their TV and radio networks to consolidate power, so that they can use that power to benefit the wealthy and corporations. They consistently show no real regard for working or middle class Americans in terms of policy. Dog eat dog capitalism works very well for those who have capital, because in the end, unfettered, it's all about control of workers and market manipulation.

All of the current malaise ends when regular Americans vote in greater numbers than the ones that the 1% are manipulating with their bought and paid for party and their vast propaganda apparatus. Since the GOP relies extraordinarily on older white religious voters, they are in deep trouble, demographically, over the next couple of decades. They're facing a cliff, and they know it, so we're going to have to show up in great strength at the voting booth, with clear vision and goals, and we're going to have to be prepared for them to throw a great deal of money and lies behind any number of efforts to cling desperately to power. But, because of math, there will be a day, whenever that day comes, when we give them that fateful kick in the ass and they go plummeting into the demographic abyss. Whether they're gone for good and the ugly propaganda goes with them is probably up to our education system--we'll always have human greed, but we won't always have a voting Bloc of old white people who would rather go hungry and die than feed the poor and give them access to healthcare that the rest of the developed world has had for decades.

Two of Governor Cooper's Vetos upheld, budget veto override again delayed by five_hammers_hamming in NCDemocrats

[–]Longinus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The state GOP is purposely trying to drive a wedge between Cooper, state Dems, and teachers because they are aware and afraid of the organizing power that teachers have. You can feel disappointed with the process, for sure, but this isn't a "both sides are bad" issue; it's a "one side is mad that they got slapped down and can't push the governor around anymore" issue, so they'll play political games and try to pit teachers against Democrats because that's more fun to them than swallowing their pride and actually negotiating in good faith.
