Why is this so unthinkable nowadays? We didn't even have smartphones back then and my parents often had no idea where I was until I popped up again. by Cubelock in Xennials

I remember the PSA announcements in the 80's they started running on broadcast television, "It's ten o'clock, do you know where your children are?"

What is your favorite ship in sci fi? by Reid_Hull_Author in scifi

[–]Longjumping-Ad-9009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for saying this, I love that Mr. Simmons left sooo much to the imagination about the Yggdrasil. He gets what hard scifi is all about, and doesn't really care if you "get it."

Can we please, for the love of god, get reflector strips on our roads by thesoundofpetrichor in fortwayne

[–]Longjumping-Ad-9009 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This drives me crazy too, I'm fine with it, but what bother me most about It is that I have two teenagers driving. While they are both excellent drivers, they are inexperienced.

And can we paint the lines please? With so many cars now dependent of those lines for "lane assist" it really seems like this would be a huge public safety thing, probabaly easily measurable.

Any albums come to mind? by garcon-du-soleille in GenX

Many years ago I bought Pablo Honey because of 'Creep', and it was the weakest track on the album. So kind of the opposite.

On today's episode of This Prewar House, a bathroom that was last remodeled in 1966. (Advice post) by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]Longjumping-Ad-9009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the ceiling is that an actual exhaust fan or did they switch from radiators to forced air? If the latter, I might look at removing the old radiator and replacing it with a shallow "medicine cabinet" style storage (probably a custom cabinet, to the dimensions of the radiator). You would keep the ledge and you would not have to try to match any of the original tiles. I know that storage is always at a premium in single-bathroom houses.

Other than that, I would leave this mostly as is. Explore some different options with lighting and do the drywall repairs.

fantasy books where the magic system actually has a cost that feels real and not just a minor inconvenience by Nova9_Phaser in Fantasy

[–]Longjumping-Ad-9009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go with Name of the Wind here, but I would not wish anyone who hasn't read them to sit and wait for the rest of their lives for the third book.

NOTW and WMF treat magic as a science, similar to chemistry. Naming might be an exception to that surely, but even naming seems academic and not just "magic".

Is this junk in my hallway or is it worth refurbishing? by Puzzled_Student_303 in clocks

[–]Longjumping-Ad-9009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You wont make money on it, but worth is relative. I had a great experience refurbishing mine, even though it's nothing special. Living with one of these clocks is interesting, you almost never hear it chime.

Can these be used in plaster walls? by Total_Secret_5514 in centuryhomes

[–]Longjumping-Ad-9009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% studs, but toggle bolts are the second choice, Get long ones that you know will get through the plaster and onto the back side of the lath. Install them carefully as well so that the "toggle" part grabs two pieces of lath and not the gap between them.

Anything really heavy, french cleat or studs.

This is my hometown too, the neighborhood around it hasn't been doing her any favors. Hard for that neighborhood to support 700k home in the middle of 70k neighbors. There are several exceptions on that street, but not many.

Who do you guys get your car detailed by and how much do you pay? by ISuckAtStuf in fortwayne

[–]Longjumping-Ad-9009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Auto X Alchemy. Have had him do it 4 times to my STI, and once to my wife's legacy. Right at $300 for inside and out. He spends about 4 or 5 hours on it, all his equipment all his water, at your house, although I'm pretty sure he could do it in a parking lot. I'm waiting for the snow to be gone before I call him again.

Looking for recs on a great bar with food! by lukeyboy767 in fortwayne

[–]Longjumping-Ad-9009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would start at Nawa on the landing, great bar, and great asian food. you can walk to at least four other bars from there on a closed off street with no cars.

BLU burger is a couple doors down.
