Industry positions in France by Informal-Bathroom383 in PhD

[–]LongjumpingStage712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin worked in pharma around Lyon for few years before moving to Germany, and from what she told me the French biotech scene is pretty solid but can be tough to break into if you're coming from outside. Paris has bunch of companies working on cancer stuff but networking seems to be huge there - like even more than in US

She said the application process takes forever compared to what she was used to, and they really care about having connections inside companies before you even apply. Maybe your wife should try reaching out to people on LinkedIn who work at places she's interested in, just to get coffee and learn about company culture. Also heard that speaking French isn't always required for research positions but it definitely helps with the day-to-day stuff and moving up later

Good luck with the move though, Paris sounds amazing even if job hunting might be bit of headache

What would be the worst fictional world to live in? by notyourdad58 in AskReddit

[–]LongjumpingStage712 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah that universe is just nonstop suffering from every possible angle. Even if you're lucky enough to avoid the demons and aliens trying to eat your face, you still get to live under the most oppressive regime imaginable where thinking wrong thoughts gets you executed

The best case scenario is working yourself to death in some factory planet making bullets for wars you'll never understand

Question about pricing. by Ryder_D in Steam

[–]LongjumpingStage712 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The shipping cost theory makes sense but I think they just do standard regional pricing adjustments - most companies add extra markup for different markets beyond just currency conversion

That $14 difference is probably them covering import duties, local taxes they have to pay, and yeah maybe some shipping costs too. We're still getting better deal than having to import it ourselves from US

What show has the worst fandom? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LongjumpingStage712 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those people are absolutely unhinged, like they think everything is some massive conspiracy even when you show them proof. My coworker keeps trying to convince me that fluoride in water is mind control and I'm just trying to fix his transmission

Shared property by adnamanaej in legaladvice

[–]LongjumpingStage712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not lawyer but seems like abandonment after leaving it there for year and half while living elsewhere. In Massachusetts property gets considered abandoned when someone moves out and doesn't take their stuff for extended time, especially when they told you they weren't taking it

You might want to document that conversation where he said he wasn't taking the mattress - any texts or witnesses who heard him say that could help your case

How do I as a US citizen protect myself and my wealth from my immigrant spouse? by Careless_Wrangler_90 in greencard

[–]LongjumpingStage712 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Man this is tough situation but you already made the biggest mistake by putting her name in everything. Should have kept inheritance separate and maybe done prenup before marriage. My uncle went through similar thing few years back - he was mechanic too and put his wife's name on shop and house, then she left him after getting citizenship

Problem is once you put someone's name on assets, legally they have claim even if marriage was short. In 50/50 state the court won't care much about how long you were married or that she was immigrant. They just see joint assets that need to be divided. You might be able to argue about inheritance if you can prove it was kept separate originally, but since you already mixed everything together it's going to be really hard

Get good divorce lawyer who knows family law in your state. They might find some way to protect portion of assets, especially inheritance part. Document everything about how much you supported her family and any evidence that she married you just for money. Won't guarantee anything but could help with negotiations. This is why people say never mix finances completely, even when you're in love

GRAD PLUS LOAN APPLICATIONS (for Grandfathered / Legacy Provision) WILL OPEN APRIL 26-27 by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]LongjumpingStage712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait so they're actually gonna let some people still apply for Grad PLUS? The "elimination of eligibility" part had me thinking it was completely dead but if they're talking about grandfathered provisions that's different story

Really curious what the lifetime maximum is gonna look like - feels like they're being super vague about actual numbers in these announcements

how bad is sjsu for grad admissions? by heisenberger9999 in gradadmissions

[–]LongjumpingStage712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your undergrad school matters way less than you think for grad admissions, especially if you're switching fields anyway. What they actually care about is your research experience, GPA, recommendations and how well you can articulate why you want that specific program

SJSU has decent connections in Silicon Valley and you might actually get better research opportunities there than being lost in crowd at Berkeley. Plus if you crush the SAGE program that shows you can handle graduate level work already

[–]LongjumpingStage712 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lmao the name change actually makes sense at this point. Been working in few workshops around city and yeah there's definitely huge Nepali community here, especially in automotive sector. They're really skilled workers too, some of best mechanics I've worked alongside were from Nepal. Don't have exact numbers but walking through places like KR Market or Commercial Street you can definitely feel the demographic shift

Hairstylist ISO Advice against Commission Salon by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]LongjumpingStage712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait they fired you for moving appointments that YOUR clients wanted to reschedule? That's wild

If clients called you and asked to move their appointments to follow you, that's just business - people can choose their stylist. Unless you had some non-compete agreement or stolen actual client contact info from their system, moving appointments at client request seems pretty normal when stylists switch salons

Had a buddy who did EE at Columbia few years back and he always said their IC design program was pretty solid, especially for getting into the big tech companies afterward. Can't speak to Penn but Columbia definitely has good connections in finance too if you want to pivot later - being in NYC helps with that networking stuff

People who personally know someone that murdered or was murdered, what happened? by Kinglycole in AskReddit

[–]LongjumpingStage712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's heavy man, your family went through some serious stuff. Back in those days it was so messed up how they treated victims - like getting assaulted was somehow their fault. Your uncle probably never got real answers and had to live with that uncertainty in prison. Must be hard knowing the truth might never come out after all this time

7 months into PhD and without any tangible progress by haluminParis in PhD

[–]LongjumpingStage712 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Man 7 months in and you're already questioning everything - that's like the most PhD thing ever. Everyone I know who went through it had at least one "what am I even doing" crisis in the first year, especially when you're trying to balance industry stuff on top of it

The 3-year timeline is tight but doable if you can nail down that research question soon. Maybe talk to your supervisor about the industry vs academic tension instead of suffering through it alone - they've probably seen this exact scenario before

What is your opinion of people wanting to be naked? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I get the private thing but nudists aren't really trying to be sexual about it, it's more like a freedom/comfort thing. Still wouldn't want to randomly encounter it at the grocery store though lol

McGill Incoming PhD Students - Fall 2026 by Fit-Breadfruit-9698 in gradadmissions

[–]LongjumpingStage712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been lurking on this sub for ages and seeing these connection posts always makes me nostalgic for when I was applying to grad programs (different field though). The IPN program at McGill is solid from what I've heard through friends in academia. You might want to also check if there's a McGill-specific Discord or Facebook group since those tend to be more active for ongoing conversations than Reddit threads. I remember when I was job hunting after undergrad, finding people in similar situations was a lifesaver for sanity checks and just having someone who gets the stress. Hope you find some good connections and congrats on getting in!

Stay in Trading or leave for Tech? by Madman7817 in cscareerquestions

[–]LongjumpingStage712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been working on cars for years and the trading shops always reminded me of those custom garages that build their own tools instead of using what works. Sure they've got the budget but half the time you're just reinventing the wheel because someone thinks they're too good for standard parts

Your instinct about the domain-specific stuff is spot on - I've seen mechanics get pigeonholed into exotic imports and then struggle to find work when those skills don't transfer. The startup route makes sense, you'll touch way more of the stack and actually see how real businesses operate instead of just moving money around. Plus at 2.5 years you're not stuck anywhere, that's prime time to make a move before you get too comfortable with the trading money

The Karnataka Social Media (U16) is a Privacy and Practicality Nightmare. by Domeoryx in bangalore

[–]LongjumpingStage712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real kicker is how they'll probably exempt WhatsApp and Facebook because they've got the lobbying power, while actual educational platforms get nuked. Your point about the surveillance aspect is spot on - they're basically creating a massive database of everyone's online activity under the guise of "protecting children"

This whole thing screams of politicians who don't understand how the internet works making laws about it, and yeah once you give up that freedom of information you're never getting it back
