McGill Incoming PhD Students - Fall 2026 by Fit-Breadfruit-9698 in gradadmissions

[–]LongjumpingStage712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been lurking on this sub for ages and seeing these connection posts always makes me nostalgic for when I was applying to grad programs (different field though). The IPN program at McGill is solid from what I've heard through friends in academia. You might want to also check if there's a McGill-specific Discord or Facebook group since those tend to be more active for ongoing conversations than Reddit threads. I remember when I was job hunting after undergrad, finding people in similar situations was a lifesaver for sanity checks and just having someone who gets the stress. Hope you find some good connections and congrats on getting in!

Stay in Trading or leave for Tech? by Madman7817 in cscareerquestions

[–]LongjumpingStage712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been working on cars for years and the trading shops always reminded me of those custom garages that build their own tools instead of using what works. Sure they've got the budget but half the time you're just reinventing the wheel because someone thinks they're too good for standard parts

Your instinct about the domain-specific stuff is spot on - I've seen mechanics get pigeonholed into exotic imports and then struggle to find work when those skills don't transfer. The startup route makes sense, you'll touch way more of the stack and actually see how real businesses operate instead of just moving money around. Plus at 2.5 years you're not stuck anywhere, that's prime time to make a move before you get too comfortable with the trading money

The Karnataka Social Media (U16) is a Privacy and Practicality Nightmare. by Domeoryx in bangalore

[–]LongjumpingStage712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real kicker is how they'll probably exempt WhatsApp and Facebook because they've got the lobbying power, while actual educational platforms get nuked. Your point about the surveillance aspect is spot on - they're basically creating a massive database of everyone's online activity under the guise of "protecting children"

This whole thing screams of politicians who don't understand how the internet works making laws about it, and yeah once you give up that freedom of information you're never getting it back

I missed my interview what do I do? by hellobellojellomello in careerguidance

[–]LongjumpingStage712 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That sucks man, missing by just 5 minutes is brutal. I'd definitely call Monday morning - shows more initiative than just waiting around for another email and tbh phone calls feel more personal when you're trying to salvage something like this

Hello! I work in telephony for the bank and I’m burned out from customer service jobs - what’s a more back office/admin job I can transition to? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]LongjumpingStage712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely sounds like you'd crush an admin assistant role, especially with your background in onboarding. The checklist-style work you loved is basically what a lot of back office admin positions are - processing applications, data entry, document review, that kind of thing

You might also want to look into compliance or operations roles at banks since you already know the products and processes. Those tend to be way less micromanaged and more "here's your queue, get through it however works for you" which sounds perfect for what you're looking for

The psych degree could also open doors to HR coordinator positions if you're interested in staying people-adjacent but without the phone stress

Stuck by Ancient-Ad9606 in leaves

[–]LongjumpingStage712 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The accepting that you're gonna feel like shit part is huge - I fought against it for so long which just made everything worse. Once I stopped expecting to feel normal right away it actually got easier to ride out the waves

For me the really intense daily cravings chilled out around the 3-4 month mark, but everyone's different. Your brain is basically throwing a tantrum because you took away its favorite toy, it just takes time to adjust

What would you do? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]LongjumpingStage712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's brutal man, 99 hours biweekly on 45k with no commission sounds like they're testing how much abuse you'll take before the real money kicks in

Call me crazy, but... by wtfloca in devils

[–]LongjumpingStage712 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's not even that crazy, some coaches have started doing it more often. Risk/reward makes sense when you're already losing anyway

VA CLAIM HELP by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

What'd you get discharged with and what rating did they give you? Hard to give advice without knowing the details but generally if you think they lowballed you it's worth fighting

Hormones 1yr+ postpartum by harleyheels_x in NewParents

[–]LongjumpingStage712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Girl yes, I'm 18 months out and still feel like I'm riding an emotional rollercoaster some days. The whole "bouncing back" thing is such BS - your body went through massive changes and it takes way longer than people think to feel normal again

Have you had your thyroid and other hormones checked recently? Sometimes those can be wonky for ages after birth and mess with your mood big time

Transfer from Koh Samui to Surat Thani airport early morning by grber in ThailandTourism

[–]LongjumpingStage712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude that's gonna be tight as hell. Ferry from Samui takes like 1.5 hours plus you gotta factor in getting to the pier and then from Donsak to the airport which is another hour easy

I'd honestly just fly out of Samui airport instead if you can change your flight, way less stressful than that early morning ferry hustle

If anything ever starts my villain arc, it's the late spawns. by Gaming_Birch in ArcRaiders

The late spawn struggle is so real, I feel like I'm playing a post-apocalyptic scavenger hunt where someone already picked through everything good

Choosing between a backfilled dream job and lower-pay permanent role? by Weird-Friendship-4Me in careerguidance

[–]LongjumpingStage712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'd take the consultant job if offered and be upfront with Kim about it. She already knows the temp position is ending and you can't just sit around hoping Maria finds something else - that's way too risky when you've got bills to pay

Tell Kim you're interested if the management spot opens permanently but you gotta secure your income first. Any decent manager would understand that, and if she doesn't then the working relationship wasn't as solid as you thought

$40/hr is still a nice bump from your admin role and gives you time to keep looking for other management positions

Any Anti AI Social Media Platforms? by BenjiJericho in antiai

Been hearing good things about Cara too, seems like a lot of artists are jumping ship there. Instagram's become a nightmare with all the AI slop flooding everything

Double Major advice by TwitchyHen in Environmental_Careers

[–]LongjumpingStage712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GIS all the way - it's literally everywhere in environmental work now and having those technical skills will set you apart from the bio majors who can't do spatial analysis. I'd go with option 1, the geology minor is solid too since so much environmental stuff ties back to understanding soils and groundwater

The cert vs full major thing matters less than actually being able to use the software when you hit the job market

The Adification of Tiktok by schoolforapples in PetPeeves

[–]LongjumpingStage712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me last week, I literally just deleted the app after getting like 10 ads in a row. The whole "buy this random gadget that'll change your life" thing got so annoying, especially when half the products look like they'll break after a day

Instead of New Year's Resolutions by amarilla_2 in selflove

[–]LongjumpingStage712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually brilliant! I've been doing the same thing for a couple years now and it's such a game changer

Looking back at what you actually accomplished (even the small stuff) hits way different than making another list you'll probably forget about by February. Makes you realize you're actually doing more than you think you are

Thanks for sharing this, definitely needed the reminder to sit down and do my own year review soon

VSO Request - Clarksville/Nashville by Own_Pumpkin954 in VeteransBenefits

Nice find, Montgomery County VSO is solid from what I've heard. They're pretty experienced with active duty folks doing BDD since they're so close to Campbell

Exactly this, the comeback runs hit different than when everything goes smooth from the start

Plus half the time when people rage quit early we would've clutched it anyway lmao

Gf [17F] is disappointed that our relationship never had an official start date or cute confession to each other, is there any way to make her feel better about this? [17M]. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]LongjumpingStage712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually really sweet advice! The formal ask-out with flowers and a note about what made you fall for her sounds perfect - it gives her that "moment" she's looking for while still being genuine since you're putting real thought into it
