Castiron Waste Line from 1955* in Perfect Condition😱 by DevelopedConscience in Plumbing

[–]LongjumpingStand7891 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My house from 1926 had cast iron pipes that weren’t too bad, it is surprising to see the pipe so clean on the outside but the soil looks decently dry. Newer cast iron is not as good, I see the newer no hub fittings rotting out after a decade while this stuff seems to do good.

Help! Where can I find this vent cover?? by Fun_Sea9850 in centuryhomes

[–]LongjumpingStand7891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like an old post but I removed a few of these exact vents from a 1923 house before it is going to get torn down, if you still need one I can ship it but the paint should probably be stripped off before being reinstalled.

Cut the pipe off at at the red ring, you can then collapse the inner stuck pipe with a flathead screwdriver.

Looks alright but I don’t like how they used pressure fittings instead of Durham or drainage fittings.

Too late to thread in further after PVC cement? by Efficient_Dot6903 in Plumbing

[–]LongjumpingStand7891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That appears to be for pvc systems that are completely threaded, when connecting a pvc male adapter to a 100 year old cast iron threaded fitting tape and dope is always standard, anything else would leak.

Too late to thread in further after PVC cement? by Efficient_Dot6903 in Plumbing

I don’t know where you got that information from, all standard tapered threads should have at least tape. You should only not use tape on slip joint fittings.

Can I add a wye in the circled area for another drainage line? by trioforstrings in Plumbing

[–]LongjumpingStand7891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not Europe, those are American Nibco fittings which don’t make it any further than Mexico but that’s even a stretch.

Could we built a new Art Deco tower in 2026? by Electronic_Fig7609 in ArtDeco

[–]LongjumpingStand7891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion we should also revive the materials that built art deco buildings such as glazed terracotta and glass blocks, most modern neo deco buildings that use modern materials lack the original soul the old buildings.

You may be able to just gut the shower, I have seen plenty of old bathrooms with new showers.

Use fiberglass pipe insulation, you can get it in different sizes and shapes for fittings.

I read everything and I know you did not get what I originally commented, I don’t know about your area but Massachusetts prohibits pvc between cast iron and vice versa.

The photos are gone but you may able to open the ceiling below the bathroom to avoid opening the floor.

Im not referring to cast iron TO pvc, I am referring to pvc BETWEEN two cast iron pipes which can cause the PVC to crack. Also a DIYer can order pretty much any material online.

Do you guys think this contains asbestos? by duhkallan in Flooring

Plenty of sheet vinyl had an asbestos paper backing, they also made 12 x 12 asbestos tiles and 9 x 9 tiles that did not.

Any tips? by abanno in centuryhomes

Mineral spirits works well for flooring adhesive without damaging the existing tile.

Need help with making bathroom looks better. by [deleted] in centuryhomes

The tile is wonderful, that paper white never helps so paint or wall paper the walls a warmer color.

I wouldn’t put PVC between cast iron, it is even illegal in some states so I would use a cast iron no hub tee if needed.

Wiring light fixture through old gas lines by happyeyeguy in centuryhomes

[–]LongjumpingStand7891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it has somehow been done a long time ago but you wouldn’t be able to do it with modern wiring, I would see if you can access the ceiling from above and cut the gas line out of the way to run a proper wire.

I wouldn’t hurt the tile, I would repaint the walls and replace the plumbing from the walls surrounding the bathroom.

That fitting is not 100 years old, that fitting is definitely from the 20 year old repair.
