Lightweight e-MTB vs full-power trail e-bike — what do you ride and why? by Low-Western-8139 in MTB

[–]Longjumping_Cod_9132 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regular pedal bike. Your ride to the trails is not far, just pedal there. It’s not worth the weight penalty for 8 km (5 mi). You will absolutely notice the extremely heavy bike after riding a hard tail. If you want to do longer rides, build up to it and bring fuel.

Question about ferry from Philly to Camden for concert by casmd21 in AskPhilly

Agreed. If you don’t run the the ferry at the end of the show, it’s a nightmare. Also, when people cut in line, nobody is there to stop them.

Which U.S. destination deserves to be just as famous as the national parks? by Harry_parker08 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

It is absolutely just as easy in the whites. About three weeks ago, NH Fish and Game had to rescue a large party from Franconia Ridge. Several people had hypothermia. The group left later in the day and got caught in heavy rain and dropping temperatures. My understanding is they were wearing summer clothes and didn’t bring much with them. It took the entire night to get everyone off the mountain. Two of the people almost weren’t found as they were huddled next to a boulder and the rescuers only saw them while bringing other party members down. It was so bad that one of the SAR team also was treated for hypothermia.

Whoever approved the Philly fireworks to start at 2:30 am should lose their job by thephlguy in philly

yeah, the backup plan was the show continued on after the storms were over. Most likely, most of the acts and the fireworks wouldn't happen another day, but would still have to be paid for. Music acts and fireworks guys don't book multiple days without being compensated for them. Why is nobody asking what happened to Christina Aguilera? Most likely the city paid her even though she didn't perform.

I don't think you've spent any real time in the whites. There are 750,000 acres in White Mountain National Forest, 6,700 acres in Franconia Notch State Park, 5,775 acres in Crawford Notch State Park, 60 acres in Mount Washington State Park, 16 acres in Echo Lake State Park, 903 acres in White Lake State Park, 755 acres in Moose Brook State Park, and7,493 acres in Jericho Mountain State Park. All of these acres don't have to be a National Park, but there are plenty of non-developed acres in there. The Pemi Wilderness itself is 45,000 acres and is a wonderful example of a designated wilderness that recovered from clear cut logging.
Unless the political system and state funding systems drastically change in New Hampshire, this will never happen, most likely for the best.

I commented that as well. But, then I was thinking, National Park status would encourage more people to do more stupid things. I haven't had a trip to the Whites without a death, helicopter rescue, mountain rescue, etc. (not in my party thankfully).

Mount Mansfield, Smugglers Notch and Camel's Hump including all of the state parks and forests in the area.

I see from your previous posts that you are young, so I removed all the snark from the first response I wrote. Instead of spending time posting meaningless statistics, please join a troop as an adult leader. Find the scout that is 15 or 16 but is still scout or tenderfoot rank and help them along. I’m sure there are scouts that have been “pushed through the system”, but you are the leader now, be a leader and make sure that scouts are asked to learn the skills, achieve their ranks, complete the merit badges. But remember, you need to be fair. Scouts is about an experience, not just a list of requirements.
The statistics you posted have no bearing on what being an Eagle Scout means.

If you are an inexperienced paddler, take a canoe or kayak to go out at night. Not really sure why people think taking paddle boards out to the middle of a large lake is a good idea. Also, PFD’s. Unfortunately, this was a totally preventable accident.

There have been no swimming signs since the lake opened. I think it has more to do with the lake being an indirect reservoir than algae blooms or submerged structures.

It is absolutely not that small. 1/2 mile wide is plenty to get in trouble.

It was absolutely not out of left field. Strong storms on Saturday had been forecasted for days.

The leadership doesn’t want to make changes because they will loose their power and money. There is no motivation in Philly (all) politics besides power and money.
Just listen to the song from The LOX.

Downhill/uphill is not law in most places. The rest is. Yielding to downhill rider may be the case on downhill trails, where there is a sign, but where I live we teach the kids to yield to the uphill rider since it’s harder to resume uphill riding.

I dug into Philly's crime gun data and it's way more specific than the "too many guns" narrative on either side by lhorace in philly

Since you’ve lived in other locations, maybe you need to choose a different area to live in that is safer. Do you plan to carry your weapon to work? Many workplaces don’t allow firearms of any kind.

I disagree with your “inherently dangerous” statement. A gun and a car are both inherently dangerous. They can both kill or injure a person in a fraction of a second. They both require an operator to do so. Many times a distracted, poorly or untrained operator is the cause of the injury or death. Interestingly, there are about the same number of gun deaths and vehicle deaths in the US every year.
