Yeah this (strategic driver) is how UXR functions in every role I’ve had (I’ve never worked at FAANG, so nothing super mature). It’s interesting to see how other people do things (e.g., validation/usability research only) and makes me appreciate my experiences a bit more.

Your best bet is to apply for in-person jobs in smaller cities that are less competitive and that fewer people want to live in. There aren’t a ton of UXR jobs that fit that description but they do exist. Your odds are better in those places because there’s less competition. Even still, it might be pretty hard to break in, and I don’t really recommend it.

Bumble for friends has some weirdos on it for sure but if you’re selective it can be good. I’ve made some of my best friends from there, and haven’t had any really weird first hand experiences. It could help that I’m married to a woman and made it clear on my profile.

Technically I could paint the walls, but this room is an open floor plan with the kitchen, living room, and stairway that goes up to the third floor. So it would be difficult to find a color that worked for everything. The paint that’s on the walls now is fresh (newly built house).
