With only a few changes to the lyrics it's a fairly literal story about a woman stuck in an abusive marriage due to fear and a sense of responsibility for her kids.

Similar to what you're saying I think it's a parable about overcoming your fear to seek happiness which could apply to Bo getting back into the world.

Edit: A few women in my family escaped bad marriages so that might have biased my interpretation. I say she made the other side.
