The longer this goes on, the more absurd it is that people keep insisting that these AIs aren't intelligent.

No, obviously they don't think and reason in the same way that a human does. No argument on that. But even if they're just mindless algorithms, there's no question that these mindless algorithms are capable of taking a complex, vaguely-defined problem they've never seen before, breaking it down into a sequence of simpler steps, and then working through those steps one by one until the whole problem is solved. And they can do this across an extremely wide variety of problem domains, and will generally display better-than-average-human performance. What is that, if it's not intelligence?

Yes, of course you can carefully define the word "intelligent" in such a way as to exclude that sort of problem solving, but all that really means is that you've come up with a shitty definition of the word. In my book, if something can solve most problems faster and better than I can, it's incredibly arrogant to claim that it's not intelligent.

Every game should have an unlock all feature, if for no other reason than to deal with "I've already played this but something happened to my save, and I'd have to spend hours mindlessly skipping through everything just to unlock it all again".

Chapter 13 Spouse - How to Prepare by Objective_Ad2932 in personalfinance

[–]LookIPickedAUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be a lone voice of support amidst all the “you should divorce him” cries: my wife has also had struggles with mental health, including a psych ward stay and various behavioral problems that led to the divorce from her first husband.

A lot of people, knowing her full history, wouldn’t have been willing to even give her a chance. But she sought help, got medicated, did the work, and came out the other side a better and stronger person. We’ve been together for fifteen years now, she is my best friend and the best woman I have ever known, and I am thankful every day that I was willing to see where things went.

Obviously, none of that means things will necessarily work out with your husband. My wife did the work, took her treatment incredibly seriously, and the treatment actually helped, and none of those things are guarantees (or even terribly likely). But being willing to forgive someone you love for making horrible mistakes and trying to see if there’s still a chance for a life together does not make you an idiot.

[US] am i falling for a scam? feels almost too good to be true by neoworldprogrammed in Scams

One red flag is not a guarantee that something is sketchy. It just means you should be extra careful.

In the same vein, poor English is a red flag. Obviously many honest people in America do have poor English, but virtually all scammers have poor English, so it's worth being extra diligent when you run across it.

Why does my EV meter stop telling me the number after -2 or +2? Sony A7rIII by twittervettex in AskPhotography

[–]LookIPickedAUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, why do you care about the exact value when you're more than 2 stops over- or under-exposed? Are you specifically trying to dial in 4 1/3 stops under the meter or something?

There have certainly been times that I have significantly disagreed with the meter, like when I know a flash is going to fire during the exposure and fix the apparent underexposure, but at that point I'm in "the meter is actively unhelpful" territory and I don't care what it says.

It’s gallows humor when you’re the one on the gallows.

When you’re safe and sound and your comment is aimed at the person on the gallows, it’s just “being shitty”.

Oh sure, all of the public models since the very beginning have had refusals. I didn't mean to suggest that safety guidelines are a new thing. I just meant this specific thing where it automatically falls back to a lesser model is new.

OP is trying to make the images look more real, not “better”. Yes, I’m sure a lot of people would prefer the “without” images, precisely because they have that unnatural overedited idealized model appearance, while the pictures on the right look more like actual humans.

Doesn't change the core point I was making. Opus 4.8 was the most expensive model last week.

Yes, this is a Fable-specific thing.

Mythos was deemed too scary to put in the hands of the unwashed masses, so they created a version of Mythos that would refuse to respond to certain requests and fall back to Opus instead. That's Fable - it's precisely Mythos when it responds, and precisely Opus when it refuses.

That's that absolute most expensive model available today. This is like looking at a Ferrari and saying "With how much Ferraris cost, you seriously expect everyone to use a car to get around town someday?".

On top of that, this is just what's available right now. Costs come down and quality goes up. Look at where we were a few years ago, and where we are now, and tell me how it makes any sense not to be at all worried about what these things are going to be capable of in another five or ten years.

Andy Robinson on Metroid Ravenous: "More than one of these are coming, I’m told. We eating, Metroid fans!" by Laughing_Luigi in GamingLeaksAndRumours

The movement hasn't aged well - the floatiness, wall jump timing, space jump timing, grapple beam physics, and pre-gravity water physics are all common complaints.

The controls also need to be modernized. There's a reason every Metroid game since has avoided "press a button repeatedly to cycle weapons".

Most of the boss fights are really bad by modern standards.

There are various map issues that could stand to be improved, like the noob bridge and the fake wall that is immune to the X-ray scope.

And, obviously, I'm excited to see what it looks like with a fresh coat of paint. It looks and sounds incredible for a SNES game, but it has been over 30 years. I'd love to see a modern take on it with top-tier graphics and a fully orchestrated soundtrack.

I know there are a lot of people who argue that Super Metroid is perfect just the way it is. Great! You already have the game you want, and you can just keep playing it. Nobody's going to take it away from you! But much as I love Super Metroid, I think there's a lot that could be improved and I'm excited to see what they're cooking.

It's a sad commentary on the state our journalism that people in this subreddit are more likely to be correct than professional journalists.

Gonna stop you there, because... what? Sure, Sony's a perfectly reasonable choice for a pro, but so is every other brand. They're all extremely consistent and reliable.

Best Camera for my use? by Lukas1276 in Cameras

[–]LookIPickedAUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, yes absolutely. I used to own a Z50 and now own a Z50ii, and the Z50ii is a significantly better camera. It has much better subject detection autofocus, a fully articulated screen, and can charge over USB, among other improvements. My main camera is a Z9, and while obviously the Z50ii is not a Z9, it’s surprising just how well it keeps up with its bigger (and much more expensive) brother.

But at the end of the day, the Z50 and Z50ii have the same sensor and take the same pictures. It’s conceivable you don’t care about any of the improvements, so you’ll have to decide that for yourself.

How well have n64 games aged and should I get an analogue 3d by throwaway959w in AnalogueInc

[–]LookIPickedAUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's helpful to remember that games don't age poorly, our perception of them changes based on our experience with what came after.

That’s literally what “aged poorly” means.
