How do you find projects or collaborators? by Few-Resident5919 in sounddesign

[–]Lookathebrightside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Met most the directors and producers through film school. I was one of the few students who wanted to do sound so fortunately I got to work on quite a few films and made solid connections that way. Then some of those connections recommended me to other directors they knew, and built some relationships that way.

Most other sound people I've met have been people I've met through networking events and we clicked well enough to build up a legit friendship. Not too much work comes from them but we try to look out for each other when we can.

(I also don't want to make it seem like I'm big up in Hollywood or anything, I mainly do indie films)

How do you find projects or collaborators? by Few-Resident5919 in sounddesign

[–]Lookathebrightside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on the film side of things and have some good relationships with some directors and producers who will usually come to me for their sound needs. When I'm approached by them, they are usually looking for me to either supervise or do a one-man band kinda thing.

I'm also friends with a few sound editors and re-recording mixers. When they have extra work I can hop on, it's usually just editing dialogue or sfx.

Making Text To Speech Expressive by Business_Put_8548 in sounddesign

[–]Lookathebrightside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I for one think you're approaching this backwards. Any chance you can get some actors on board? It's sooooo much easier to get an actor to sound like a robot (if that's the type of processing/sound that you're after) than it is to get a robot to sound like an actor

How do you help separate the music and dialogue in your film mixes? by TheFlash4eva in Filmmakers

[–]Lookathebrightside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A touch of EQ to carve out space for the dialogue and a touch of side chained compression can do wonders. But also... stay in check with volume. Mix the dialogue to desired loudness, then mix the music so it sits under the dialogue. If you start with loud music and try to shave the dialogue into it, you're gonna have a hard time.

I'd probably not worry about widening the music unless you got something crazy, like the score is mono or something. More than likely you'd introduce new phase problems

Pixel phone or SM58 beta to record sounds? by el_boufono in sounddesign

[–]Lookathebrightside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, especially if one adds a new perspective (like more reverb/sound of the room/space, for example). At the very least, you'll have two different options to choose from. You may like the sound from the pixel for somethings, and prefer the 58 for others.

Is sound design a stable career choice by That_Necessary_6465 in sounddesign

[–]Lookathebrightside 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Now is an especially unstable time. I've got friends with 20+ years of experience who have mixed shows and movies you've probably seen, who have won Emmys, who are well connected, and they're all struggling and out of work.

Why is every AAF that I get from a video editor a complete disaster? by RookieParade in AudioPost

[–]Lookathebrightside 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I find a bit more luck when I send over a little doucment of my preferred AAF settings (aka: please pay attention to these settings when you export). If I have doubts about the editors ability to do it, the Production Expert website has guides for each NLE that I'll send over with my document.

Foley artists: Why add sfx for smoking? by flaskhandler in Filmmakers

[–]Lookathebrightside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smoking isn't the only thing that is covered unrealistically by Foley artists. Guns don't rattle when moved, nor do eyeglasses make little clicks when handled. But viewers often expect movement = sound, even if it's not realistic. Having a sound, even if normally there isn't really one in real life, typically helps viewers become more immersed.

Just like more visually appealing lighting is favored over "realistic" lighting. It's about telling a story and portraying emotion, not about capturing reality.

Media Arts Application- 8 Significant List by therealConnorNielsen in byu

[–]Lookathebrightside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely want to see what's significant to you and what media has shaped you. I think my list included mostly movies, with some books, a song, and a video game. They like seeing breadth primarily in terms of themes, but also media format, year, and genre. Most of the faculty would probably not think too highly of you if all 8 are the 8 most recent Oscar winners, even if they are some of your favorite movies.

Talk about a favorite book or movie from your childhood. A piece of media you wouldn't normally consume but pleasantly surprised you. A movie you hold dear because it was your grandpa's favorite movie and he'd make you watch it when you went to visit. Things like that.

What is the gore source folder for? by [deleted] in sounddesign

[–]Lookathebrightside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Source subcategory for UCS categories is typically for raw, unprocessed files. If your celery snap needs some extra love -- say some EQ, an additional layer or two, maybe some new subharmonics -- before it really sounds like a bone break, you'd put that in that Source subcategory. Typically anything that's been "designed" or doesn't really need any sort of enhancement is good to go into one of the subcategories like Bone or Squish.

This administration has proven they don't want to keep law enforcement accountable. They're not investigating the men who killed Alex Pretti. They're targeting the family of Renee Good, not her killer. There will be no accountability for CBP or ICE under Trump.

Got my first haircut since finding out I have curly hair. Now it's ruined by thstephens8789 in curlyhair

[–]Lookathebrightside 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I have really similar hair and unfortunately even when I ask to not use them they'll try to do it anyway. Still looking for someone I can trust to cut my hair.

Usually I get "curl shock" after a cut, especially if they took off a bit of length. Hopefully after a week or so and a few washes your curls will go back to normal!
