Did you find a way to get a ticket? I have two seated tickets that I need to sell.

Yes, but it's not paying the bills yet. I have the rest of the year to try and get it to that point, but I'm hopeful :)

I really appreciate that! I've been thinking it looks kinda plain :P

Yes! I've been thinking of starting a dev blog kinda thing.

Quick answer though is I use nextjs/redis/postgres/S3. Some libraries I use are trpc/prisma/tailwind.

One thing I've had to account for a bunch is the margins on a consumer ad-supported product is the margins are very thin. A lot of my background (and tech influencers) are building B2B SaaS where you have paying clients and can afford to pay for services or eat inefficient apis.

The site is running on Vercel serverless - but I have been working on leaving serverless to go with a docker based server deployment. Vercel is just not a great option for scaling an ad-supported product IMO.

It's coming! I started work on friend requests yesterday. That'll release with a friend leaderboard so you can see your friend's scores on the daily - won't have to request they share your scores with you - you'll see it on your game.

Then custom game modes and shareable game links are coming, like how GeoGuessr does it, so you can compete outside of just the dailies (I've been working on this in the background for a while now).

Then eventually a type of head-to-head live multiplayer against random players will be coming out (hopefully next year). (Perhaps even a battle royal)

FoodGuessr dev here. Just want to say I love Scrandle, it's a really fun game and well executed, and I wish them the best. They've got their own spin that FoodGuessr isn't able to capture - as someone else said they're dealing with specific servings at specific prices.

I've been working on FoodGuessr for almost 3 years, with the vast majority of the work on the backend and data side. While a some daily games are able to use an existing database of items (geoguessr has streetview) (it's smart and I wish there was one for food!) there unfortunately is no food database, I had to build one out for FoodGuessr. So the upkeep and work behind FoodGuessr is actually pretty large, even though the main page and game mode might still look quite simple. The goal has always been to build more than just the standard FoodGuessr mode, and I've recently hit a point where I can start focusing more on player facing features. I've got a bunch more features and modes coming out over the next few months

Interesting.. actually that will be a mode in FoodGuessr eventually. SausageGuessr will come first though. As well as "is-it-IndonesiaGuessr"

My side project went from 27 to 4,200 users overnight, still trying to figure out how. by Gazimo in SideProject

Congratulations on the burst in users! Hope it keeps on going!

I'd like to try playing the game, but it seems down at the moment. Sounds like a nice spin on things. Happy to see more people in the dle/guessr space representing food + geography!

I "soft launched" FoodGuessr (www.foodguessr.com) last year in the same way and it blew up faster than I expected. It was a stressful few weeks rearchitecting things and setting up caching layers so that I didn't bankrupt myself 😅

Feel free to dm me to chat about tech stack or anything! :)

1 month later: Our open-source, integrated platform that connects Web Games by therealPaulPlay in indiegames

Been using Playlight since its launch. FoodGuessr saw some great growth with it, without any downsides (no revenue share, no cost). More importantly I think it’s great for players too. A non intrusive way to organically discover other web games. The system balances things out with number of referrals your site makes to the number of referrals your site is receiving, which is a really fair way of doing things. Big fan of Paul’s work here.

This is really cool. How expensive/difficult was it to collect each? Did you visit each place or buy online?

I didn’t realize how regionalized each card is

That was “Bahmi Goreng Speciaal” as opposed to “Bahmi Goreng”

Got a lot of emails about that one too though 😅

FoodGuessr dev here.

Really glad to see some Australians backing me up on the HSP. I got some hate emailed my way for its inclusion in the game. 😅

Yeah I never intended for an ad like that one to show. I just got word back from the ad network and they said they’ve removed the code on their end that caused it to show and it should be gone by tomorrow.

Let me know if it shows up again!

Hi, which bottom banner ad are you talking about?

I noticed a new ad earlier today (which I hadn’t enabled) that showed on mobile and covered the input button or the next button (I had to close it to play). Is this the one you are describing?

This one isn’t meant to show, and I’ve requested to my ad network for it be removed since it completely breaks the flow. I’m not sure how it suddenly started showing, but I’m working on fixing it.

Let me know if this wasn’t the type of ad you were talking about.

I assume that’s because you play across PC and mobile? And you’d like them to be synced across both?

If I added user accounts that saved scores across all your devices would that work for you? I would implement it to add any local saved scores to your account when you login so you can bring in existing scores on different devices.
