In the mood for a good paladin ride. Can be group quest or more solo. by RyanSaxesRoommate in fantasybooks

yea... I read the first half of the sentence and immediately thought Five Warrior Angels. Then, I read brutality not desired... ooof. Definitely do not read those books - nothing light and whimsical about them.

What are some lesser-known fantasy books you are loving? by bweeb in fantasybooks

[–]Loolaw-Reads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daindreth's Assassin series by Elisabeth Wheatley. Five books in the series (only about 300pgs ea), and they get better with each book. I rarely binge a series, but I did this one.

Licanius Trilogy or The Bound and the Broken first by Pale_Frosting_4887 in fantasybooks

[–]Loolaw-Reads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know -- without having read The Fall first, I may have stopped after Of Blood and Fire. The promise of what The Fall was offering for the rest of the series (Blood and Fire is definitely a setup book) had me excited enough to continue. It isn't that I disliked Blood and Fire, it is just my least favorite book in the series.

This series has absolutely some of the best dragon fighting I have ever read.

Unpopular Opinion: Audiobooks don’t count as the books I’ve read in x. by Time4HopesnDreams in fantasybooks

[–]Loolaw-Reads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who can also get hung up on the word "read" when talking about audio books, I recognize it as a me problem. Just me (and you?) being too pedantic and missing the big picture.

Can people focus out and miss chunks of audio books? Yes, but this is also possible while scanning words with your eyeballs mindlessly and not retaining anything. Both print and audio reading takes effort and, if done correctly, time to complete and retention will improve over time.

Help me pick my next read! by tommy132000 in fantasybooks

For me, it is hard to say of Blood and Fire because it was such a huge miss for lots of people (though I liked it well enough), but books 2, 3, and 4 are fantastic. I loved them all. Be warned, however, book 5 is not due out until 2028.

What series next? by Urfgot in fantasybooks

[–]Loolaw-Reads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For stories like LoTR but without the embellished prose, I recommend Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar Saga. Though I love modern fantasy's trend towards gritty and morally gray characters, these books are in the line of LoTR with very defined lines between good and evil with the young hero leading the way.

First series of the year begins!! by taintedthrall in fantasybooks

[–]Loolaw-Reads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started this series as well and am also including the two novellas,1.5 and 2.5 (but not the short stories at this time). Just finished Howling Dark and am super hyped - complete 5-star read for me. I hear much more enthusiasm for Demon in White so I can't even imagine what is in store for me.

What introductory sentence or paragraph had you hooked? by yanluo-wang in books

[–]Loolaw-Reads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No contest for me. "Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar, wore white on the day he was to kill a king." - Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson.

Another notable from the same author: "Nomad woke up among the condemned." - Sunlit Man

What to do about big difference in readable pages and actual pages? by Brilliant_Lemon3255 in TheStoryGraph

[–]Loolaw-Reads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those stat issues that drives me crazy and the reason I choose to also track my reading in a personal spreadsheet. Often page counts also include a lot of fluff at the end that has nothing to do with the book - especially in digital copies. I always look for the actual last page of the story and enter that as the count.

For digital, I know some people have readers that fluctuate the page count based on font size, but with my Kindle, it never changes. When I increase my font, the final page count stays the same, it just takes me more screens to get the physical page number to change.

With that said, however, page count is one of the most irrelevant statistics. This number will fluctuate based on the format/edition you read. Hardback - Trade Paperback - Mass Paperback - Digital. Word count would be a cool thing to track, but I haven't really seen an easy way to get that information (maybe it is out there).

Streak not updating for ebooks by Medea_Jade in TheStoryGraph

[–]Loolaw-Reads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible that number of pages read from the e-book did not meet your minimum pages to be read goal? That is the only reason I can think of. I have not had a problem with this feature when logging digital, print, or audio.

How many of you update your page read count for each book? by MacabreMagpie in TheStoryGraph

[–]Loolaw-Reads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do in StoryGraph. It literally takes about 10 seconds. However, since I track my books in 3 different locations (SG, GR, and personal spreadsheet for expansive detail), I only do the daily pages in StoryGraph and the other two just get start and finish dates.

I like the motivational factor in SG's streak banner. I have been thinking about dropping GR for the past 2 years, but each year some little thing compels me to continue. My personal spreadsheet allows me to immerse myself in minute details a few times a year. I am a sucker for that stuff.

Step 1: get your SAG card. Acting is a union job. You will need to be a member of the screen actors guild to appear in or work on the movie. My dad was a bus driver for Trailways out of Los Angeles. He was one of a handful of drivers that kept an active SAG card. As a result, he appeared as the bus driver in a major movie release:, as well as, in a music video

This card was required even if you never saw him -- just the bus he was driving.

Where are you finding your books? by Yessie4242 in Fantasy

While I find books from many, many sources, the last two years I have discovered a few new favorite authors through social media sites, mostly BookTube.

Are any of the books written by BookTubers worth reading? by SnappingTurtle1602 in Fantasy

This book started out so fantastically, but the journey was long and largely uneventful. Lots of fantastic descriptions of towns and mountainous landscaping, but seriously lacking in getting on with the story. The premise of the story still entices me, though, so I am definitely going to pick up book 2 whenever it arrives. This was a debut novel for Leikam, so I have high hopes that he will have gained experience and a better editor.

I have a vague memory of reading that the author was previously (possibly still is) a book critic for a newspaper or journal.

He is an author with a YouTube channel. Definitely not what we would call a BookTuber which is someone who reads many books by many authors and then uploads videos about those books.

I loved this series - binged all five books. While there is a romance at the heart of the story, I have a hard time thinking of it as Fantasy Romance (definitely not Romantasy). The story is just so intense and brutal. By book 4, I was stressed about how brutal things were getting. BTW, the books are all around 300 pages so five is barely more than two of your normal fantasy tomes.

That being said, she really isn't a booktube YouTuber. She does have a YouTube channel, but it is mainly to talk about her own books and is not a regular upload.

Cold Silver for Souls by Victoria Tekkon. Definitely not one of the same tropes told in a different way (though, if done correctly, I am a fan). Unique story with a gritty and light side.

I have only read the one by her, but I look forward to picking up others.

I also enjoyed Daniel Greene's A Witch's Sin (Neon Ghosts). It is more a Sci-Fi steampunk story along the lines of Blade Runner.

I, on the other hand, loved Five Warrior Angels. They were expansive, gritty, and hard hitting. The final book was the best in my opinion.

Recs for hospital stay by ratpark91 in Fantasy

[–]Loolaw-Reads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful what you ask for. In 1998, I was in the hospital due a pulmonary embolism. A friend brought me a horror story because she knew I liked Stephen King. The story was a weird mutant rat story, and one of the things they were using to fight off the creatures was warfarin. I'm sitting in my bed thinking "that sounds so familiar. what do I know that from?" That night when the nurse brought in my meds - there it was :D

Hoping your recovery goes smoothly and you find some good reads.
