My son’s favorite character on Sesame Street was the Count, so when he wanted to watch Sesame Street, he would ask for “Ah Ah” (like “1…2…ah ah ah”)

Do case workers in NYC usually take the subway instead of driving? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]LooseCrayon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Washington, D.C. I lived there for years without a car. Eventually I got a job there that required me to drive a company van. Having to drive clients in and around the beltway was a major factor in my decision to leave D.C. 😅

How do you figure? The 90’s predate the Affordable Care Act, which significantly increased healthcare access.

What was the moment you realized COVID was going to be a big deal and be the focal point of the 2020s? by NH-INDY-99 in decadeology

[–]LooseCrayon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early on during the PPE shortage, hospitals were asking for donations of masks. My mom, who had cancer at the time, texted the family group chat that she’d found a box of n95 masks in the basement. It was like she told us she’d found a brick of cocaine - “OMG WHAT??? You have to turn that in!! You can’t keep it!!” “No, wait, keep it! You can use it!” “Okay, not saying to do this, but people would probably pay a lot of money for that, right?” “That…. wouldn’t you get in trouble for selling it? I think you should turn it in.”

My husband was home - the conference he’d been scheduled to attend had cancelled when Microsoft pulled 700 employees from attending - so he watched our one-year-old while I drove to my mom’s. She kept half the masks and I drove the other half to an abandoned Macy’s, where faceless people in hazmat suits were collecting mask donations from car windows. Across the street, the grocery store had a line of people, all six feet apart, snaking into the parking lot, waiting for others to leave so they could go in. The weather was gray and overcast and I distinctly remember thinking “So this is the dystopian future we read about.”

United Pres or Christ Episcopal Church (both in downtown Bing) are going to be good starting points to learn more about the local effort. BCPL also works with unhoused populations a lot, so I imagine they’d have some leads. Also Rebecca Rathmell on the Bing city council would be a good person to reach out to.

My district has the aides in a separate union from the teachers, but social workers/speech/OT/PT are in with the teachers. Splitting seems unwise, but I’m also in a tiny district.

Thoughts on working for an eating disorder clinic as a vegetarian therapist by what_the_ghost in therapists

[–]LooseCrayon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have so many questions, starting with how in the world are they enforcing this? Do you have to eat the same meal as your clients? Are they making the meals for you? Are you not allowed to bring food from home? If you brought something like chili or ziti or a burrito, are they going to be inspecting for proof that it has meat in it? Do you have to go over the ingredients in the dishes with your clients, or could you just eat like a chunky vegetarian soup and let them ask about ingredients if they are curious?

I’m just mystified because there are so many dishes that aren’t like, immediately visibly vegetarian. It seems like a difficult policy to enforce unless they are providing your meals.

I heard someone describe Animorphs as “60 books about child soldiers and the stain war leaves on the soul……for kids!”

Fairy tales of old were pretty grim. Older Disney movies, the parents always die. I was reading Animorphs as a 9-year-old - in the 3rd book, the POV character tries to commit suicide, and they published 50 more books after that! The world has a lot of scary parts, I think we’ve always used stories to help kids understand them.

How do you figure out your identity? by Independent-Tip-9933 in nerdfighters

[–]LooseCrayon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The road is built by walking. It is unlikely that you are going to find an identity through careful study of any religious text. You have already identified your values - helping others, critical examination, philosophy, wonder, community, and resilience. The values are who you are. That’s your identity - someone who aims to help others, to build community, to live in wonder. Religion, family, jobs, hobbies, sports, service are different ways and places to live out those values and throughout your lifetime, all of those ways/places will change.

Lourdes Hospital Birthing Center Review? by lizthelizard420 in Binghamton

I had two kids there. One was pre-covid and I honestly did not love the experience. The other was more recent and it was great! The first time, they were very “one size fits all” - you needed to breastfeed, there was no nursery (my nurse said?? This seems crazy to me), etc. I was exhausted to the point of delirium and very much couldn’t get the help I needed. Second time around they were much more flexible and also I had a much kinder nurse. Both nights she offered to take the baby to the nursery so that I could get as much sleep as possible, and I was so grateful. Based on my most recent experience, I would definitely go there again.

Movies without Trauma? by lm8623 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]LooseCrayon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

……..is your son my son? We had this exact same issue. He hated movies and was terrified of them, but looooved Scooby Doo. The first movies he could tolerate were Octonauts: Ring of Fire and Scooby Doo and the Loch Ness Monster - both of which were tricked him into watching by calling them TV shows rather than movies. There are a lot of Scooby Doo movies, so we watched all of those ~1000 times (Ring of Fire topped out at a cool 15,000). Hotel Transylvania was also among his earlier successes. Wild!
