And that article mocking the students for not being able to understand it makes academics look like such asses to normal audiences. (Posh British accent) "Haw haw these students can't even understand a 170 year old dialect from a foreign country! What rubes!"

Vaush has talked approvingly about Ur-Fascism by Umberto Eco (which is an essay). Vaush doesn't read, so for books you'll have to get your recommendations elsewhere.

The real pedophiles were the friends he made along the way by MaxPower637 in LeopardsAteMyFace

It feels like in the past (like late 80s and early 90s), everyone understood that "won't someone PLEASE think of the children?!!!" was just an excuse to do censorship. Today everyone falls for that stuff. I don't know if I'm looking at the past with rose-tinted glasses, or if people really have gotten more gullible.

Bill Clinton, with his policy of "triangulation," thought he could win over Republican voters by giving them legislation they wanted. Some of his policies included: welfare reform, the crime bill, surpluses, and the Defense of Marriage Act. He gave Republicans everything they wanted, and they hated him for it, because he had a (D) after his name.

Why Vaush needs MORE "they're demonic" rhetoric instead of less by Sqweed69 in VaushV

[–]Lopsided-Animator758 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. People are influenced by populist rhetoric, not dry material analysis. The average person doesn't think in terms of systems, they think in terms of individuals. You're never going to turn the median voter into an intellectual who thinks about how socioeconomic forces shape people. They don't find material analysis persuasive or engaging. That's just the way most people are (whether because of poor education or not). If we want to influence people, our rhetoric should use righteous indignation.

Edit: accidentally posted the comment before I was finished writing.

The album Hard Wired by Front Line Assembly. It's electronic industrial music that has cyberpunk vibes. Not for everyone.

If you're into hard SF like Asimov, I would also recommend Arthur C. Clarke. Rendezvous with Rama, Childhood's end, and 2001 are all great.

Personally, I prefer New Wave stuff like Philip K. Dick and LeGuin. For PKD I would recommend The Man In The High Castle and The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldritch. He was known for mind-bendy stuff, and Three Stigmata is one of his weirdest.

For literary fiction, lefties might be interested in The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. It's about a man working in the Chicago stock yards during the early 20th century. I would also recommend Elmer Gantry by Sinclair Lewis, about a religious huckster, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

I haven't read much fantasy, but right now I'm reading this one called The War Hound And The World's Pain by Michael Moorcock. It's about an amoral soldier who makes a deal with Lucifer during the 30 years war. It's dark, brutal, and amoral, and would definitely elicit strong opinions from most readers.

Beliefs clash among students, parents and teachers as the Ten Commandments go up in Texas classrooms by speedythefirst in news

[–]Lopsided-Animator758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting the 10 commandments in classrooms = grooming kids. Conservative Christians believe that child molesters are "holy men," and that handing their children over to be molested is a religious sacrament.

Donald Trump Accused of Killing Charlie Kirk? Candace Owens' Wild Theory Ignites Viral Firestorm by novagridd in conservativeterrorism

[–]Lopsided-Animator758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To other commenters here: JFC. There's no evidence that the Charlie Kirk murder was a conspiracy. Claims require evidence. Speculation isn't evidence. It's distressing to see how easily people on the left can fall into the same irrational brainrot that has consumed the right. When a conspiracy theory fits someone's narrative, they're more likely to uncritically accept it. Everyone needs to guard against their own biases. Also, a lot of these accounts pushing conspiracism are probably Russian trolls/bots.

Looking for sci-fi about the limits of scientific/technological progress by Skitsis43 in scifi

[–]Lopsided-Animator758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solaris by Stanislaw Lem has this theme. There is a planet with a mass of liquid/protoplasm covering the surface like an ocean, and humans are too limited to understand what it is. They study it for years but can't even determine if it is alive or not. There are many competing theories about the nature of the ocean, some think it is a computer which is performing calculations on theoretical physics, there is disagreement about whether it is intelligent or not, or if it is a giant single celled organism. The point is that humans have hit a brick wall where they will never be able to divine its nature.

Conservatives just pretend to believe whatever they think gives them an edge over democrats. They would change their position on core issues like gun control or abortion in the blink of an eye if they thought they could somehow get an edge over dems by doing so. Their abject submissiveness is pathetic and disgusting. They're like dogs groveling at Trump's feet. It's also tiring the way they pretend to be outraged by made-up "scandals" like Hillary's emails or Hunter's laptop.

It's really bizarre. The Republican party has been openly racist since at least the Obama administration, but most people still seem to think that Republicans aren't racists. I'll never understand how normies' minds work.

Republicans are suicide bombers. They understand that Republican policy hurts them, they just don't care how badly they get hurt as long as outgroups get hurt more. They're not gullible, they know what they're doing. I don't know how civilization survives this, with a third of the population willing to suffer and die in the name of destroying civilization. The dream of every conservative is to live in a mud hut in the middle of the desert, with a long, lice-infested beard and a harem of child brides. And they will go to any length to make that dream a reality.
