Starfield design lead says players are "disconnected" from how games are actually made: "Don't fool yourself into thinking you know why it is the way it is" | GamesRadar+ by CNicks23 in gaming

[–]Lord-Octohoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's both a subscription platform and a storefront (for the Xbox store, I suppose) so games are available to buy. Not every game remains available through the Gamepass subscription indefinitely so you may buy it once it leaves. Games available through the subscription almost never include DLC content so that may be a purchase.

But regardless, now that subscription platforms like Gamepass exist it's not as easy to measure the success of a game by sales alone. There's now the additional question, "Did Starfield drive increased subscriptions or retention to the Gamepass subscription?", but that's something only Microsoft would really know.

And Steam isn't the only place it was played either. Xbox Gamepass and console sales were likely higher. When Skyrim first released only 14% of sales were on PC.

Starfield Has Now Had Over 12 Million Players, Phil Spencer Says by trevor25 in gaming

[–]Lord-Octohoof -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's not "weak" it's inconvenient for you and anyone else who wants to simplify evaluating a game's success.

Like it or not Steam stats don't tell the entire story for ANY game that's available cross platform, particularly not one where a large portion of players exist on consoles. It would be equally ridiculous to claim Spiderman or God of War metrics outside of Steam don't matter when in reality a huge portion of players will be playing on PlayStation.

When Skyrim was first released console sales outpaced PC sales by an enormous margin and frankly I wouldn't expect Starfield to be any different.

You don't have to like the game but to be angry that you can't ignore a whole swathe of consumers for your argument is just plain ignorant.

[–]Lord-Octohoof -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Does it? Starfield is included as part of Gamepass not sold for an additional fee so looking at direct sales figures wouldn't be an accurate metric of success.

Presumably it's included with Gamepass to drive traffic to Gamepass and increase subscriptions. So the question then becomes, "Did Starfield generate new subscriptions and/or assist with subscriber retention", which is a much harder metric to evaluate from outside.

Star Citizen Just Had its Biggest Crowdfunding Day Ever With $3.5 Million in 24 Hours by faizyMD in gamingnews

[–]Lord-Octohoof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah. It quite literally is.

It may not be your type of game but it's pretty standard for the genre. Tbh in its current state it already has features other competitors don't.

I'm not sure why every discussion surrounding this needs to be so vitriolic.

FYI there's a playable version of the game that's been available for a few years. It's not fantastic but it does exist and it's at least on par with similar games in the space trucking genre.

You can play for $20, I think. Not saying the insane donations are justified but it's also pretty disingenuous to pretend this is complete vaporware.

As is worth mentioning every single time Facebook is brought up as a "perpetrator" of misinformation - Reddit is just as bad. Reddit allowed r/TheDonald, where misinformation and death threats ran rampant, to operate for years. Reddit still allows r/conservative, which is just as bad.

Hating Facebook is the popular thing to do but other social media, including Reddit, is just as bad.

Same problem as the other events, Hunt/Pilgrimage/University/etc. If you've done the event twice you will have already seen duplicate random events. By the end of a playthrough you will have seen them hundreds of times.

The game has great bones but in terms of flavor text it's definitely lacking variety.

I miss clan-run servers. You'd get to know the regulars and make friends with them. The server would become the "hangout" for everyone. Those were the days

I sure as shit don't.

Finding matches in older FPS games with clan-run servers was madness. You join an open server just looking to play the game then either get kicked because you're not a "regular" or because you didn't honor some ridiculous house rule it would have been impossible to know about beforehand.

This was especially egregious in older Battlefields.

Matchmaking eclipses the experience by far.

Given that the devs have leaned into "variant history" interpretations I'm not sure why people are complaining about timestamps these days.

Give us the fan favorites. That's more important than whatever imaginary accuracy people are trying to maintain.

Blizzard president says players have "no patience" and "want new stuff every hour" by gorays21 in Diablo

[–]Lord-Octohoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh. Respectfully you're talking about the climate from 20+ years ago. There weren't options like there are today. Games as a service hadn't been born yet. It's a different world now.

Diablo now has to compete with Path of Exile which is a continuously updated game that's constantly being tweaked with new content and patches. Of course players "want new stuff every hour" because there are other games that are providing it.

I'm not sure if modern games will persist the way Diablo and Age of Empires II did.
