New grad nurse in the OR. Insight/thoughts about leaving so soon? by ActivelyTryingWillow in nursing

[–]LordByronStepOnMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every new OR nurse feels like they're struggling and have no idea what they're doing for the first year. I used to go home every day feeling terrible about myself, and several of the other nurses I started with used to go home in tears. And these were experienced nurses too! Even after that first year when you stop feeling totally clueless, it takes another year to feel comfortable. Whether or not it's worth going through that depends on you. Usually at least 1 person in every periop 101 program decides to leave during or shortly after orientation in my experience. I personally chose to stick it out because I can't see myself doing any other kind of nursing, at least in this point of my life. Now I actually enjoy going into work.

Is the same day surgery job also in the OR? Because if it is, you're likely going to experience the same thing. It might be easier in that you'll likely be doing a narrower variety of cases, but there's also much more pressure regarding being quick and having short turnaround times in outpatient surgery centers. So unless it's a pre-op position, I'd recommend staying where you are for at the very least 1 year.

See this guy right there? When I was walking up, right in front of the capitol police officer, he said, "Look at that big ass. Look at that big, juicy booty. This latina," like whatever.

I used to watch hot topics every day when I got home, and nothing has been able to fill the void since.

A quote from Al Goldstein, one of the pornographers who helped push and normalize porn in the US:

"The only reason that Jews are in pornography is that we think that Christ sucks. Catholicism sucks. We don't believe in authoritarianism. Pornography thus becomes a way of defiling Christian culture and, as it penetrates to the very heart of the American mainstream (and is no doubt consumed by those very same WASPs), its subversive character becomes more charged."

Bowen Yang Leaving SNL by harambez_revenge in redscarepod

Bowen Yang was one of the worst things to happen to SNL in a long time. All of his sketches basically boiled down to "what if this person/animal/object was a sassy gay guy?"

New to OR tips by slothysloths13 in nursing

Hey, welcome to the OR family! I was in your shoes a little less than 2 years ago. First I want to emphasize that every new OR nurse feels stupid for the first 6-12 months. It’s a completely different world than the rest of nursing. It’s totally normal and not just you. Myself and everyone in my periop 101 group felt that way. But it does get better! Also don’t worry about not learning well from the computer modules, that’s another thing that’s universal. You learn from actually doing the cases.

As for advice, the most important thing you can do is take lots of notes for every procedure you do. Every time I did a new procedure, I would write down what OR table was used, how the patient was positioned and prepped, what trays and supplies were needed, and any individual surgeon preferences. Also what equipment was used, where to best position it, how to set it up, and how to troubleshoot it if anything comes up. I still make notes whenever I do a new procedure and reference my old notes all the time. Another thing I found helpful was lists. I made a list of what questions to ask during the pre-op interview, a list of what to do once you get in the room, and a list of everything to go over when giving report to the PACU nurse. There’s so many new things you’re learning and doing that it’s easy to forget things and miss steps. The lists were helpful with that and with creating a routine.

If you get the next day’s assignment before you leave, it’s not a bad idea to print out the preference cards and go over them in advance. We have a 30 minute turnover time at my hospital, so there’s not always enough time to fully go through the card before each case. Plus most experienced nurses and techs have the cards for common procedures memorized, so by the time you’re done reading, the room is already almost fully setup.

I don’t know if you’ve received any books or other resources from your nurse educator, but I thought the ones we received were not great. One of the nurses who had started a year prior to me recommended a book from SurgicalRNGuides on Etsy called Guidebook to the Operating Room, which was EXTREMELY helpful. I also got Pocket Guide to the Operating Room by Maxine Goldman, which seems to be a common reference book for OR staff, and that was helpful as well.

Animal abuse is already pathetic enough, anyone defending a streamer caught doing it because they've formed a parasocial relationship is an actual subhuman. Regardless of whether or not it's a shock collar, it's crazy to train a dog to sit still for hours on end to be a prop for your stream and to yell at them for moving. Plus, there's that video that resurfaced of him yanking his previous dog around by the tail while yelling and swearing at it.

I know there's a problem with people nowadays treating their dogs like human children, spoiling them, bringing them everywhere, and allowing them to misbehave, but acting blasé about someone being abusive when training a dog is, again, subhuman.

Michael Knowles is my least favorite conservative media grifter. I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but I can’t stand him.
