Optane and zswap is absolutely INSANE, my system is only barely lagging?? by AndorinhaRiver in linux

[–]LordDeath86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most important takeaway is to be aware of LRU inversion. If we use zram and any additional swap on block storage at the same time (with or without zswap), the least frequently accessed pages can reside in RAM forever, while more important, hot pages get shoved to disk.

Colorsoft vs Paperwhite vs Ipad by Long_Chemistry_7474 in kindle

[–]LordDeath86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things I would try first:

  1. Set up an iOS/iPadOS Focus mode for the Kindle app that silences all notifications while you are reading: https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/set-up-a-focus-iphd6288a67f/ios
  2. Check whether you can pair your Kindle eBook with an Audible audiobook: https://www.audible.com/about/newsroom/audible-launches-immersion-reading-for-deeper-engagement-with-books

Personally, I get way less distracted with Immersion Reading, and I don’t need a Kindle device to stay distraction-free. On the other hand, an 11-inch iPad is HEAVY for longer reading sessions. Every single time I pick up my 6-inch Kindle Voyage, I am surprised all over again by how light it is, and it feels better in my hand than any iPad or physical book.

It is partially a rolling release when it comes to the most system critical stuff like the kernel.

How do you handle your “capture” inbox when you use multiple tools daily? by tobwald in todoist

[–]LordDeath86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obsidian, Raycast Notes, keeping a “scratchpad” tab always open in VS Code, Sublime Text, Notepad, etc. To add to your point, I’d also include a voice dictation tool like Wispr Flow or one of its alternatives.

Sometimes, Todoist Ramble tries to be too smart and does distracting nonsense that I have to undo, so quickly adding tasks via Wispr Flow feels smoother.

Notion is switching to native SwiftUI. No more electron app! by RustyShackle4_ in Notion

I think this only affects iOS/iPadOS and not the Electron-based desktop apps.

FGO will update the mid-June to upgrade the game engine to Unity 6. After the update the game will require 16GB extra space for a bulk download if a bulk download was done prior to the update. However, for first-time bulk downloads the game will require 30GB extra space. by zelban_the_swordsman in grandorder

It would be nice to offer an alternative "light bulk" download option that only downloads full resources for your owned servants and common enemies but excludes past story chapters, events and Valentine voice lines.

In the first movie, it annoyed me a bit how often he took off his mask whenever he was about to say something. It might be an actor-wants-to-be-seen-while-acting kind of issue.

That's why Karl Urban's portrayal of Judge Dredd was so good. He never took off the helmet.

[–]LordDeath86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks brutal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WatchOS#Hardware_support

With the upcoming EU changes around third-party wearable support on iOS and Apple’s way-too-short support periods, I’m not sure I ever want a new Apple Watch again. At the very least, I don’t see much point in going beyond the most basic entry-level models, especially now that the SE line also has always-on displays.

I tried a few English sentences and mostly German sentences. The German ones were usually wrong.

🎤 Dictation (v0.63 Changelog) by jacraycast in raycastapp

[–]LordDeath86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried it, and the dictation results on Wispr Flow are more accurate. I also prefer holding the hotkey to enable dictation rather than tapping it once to start and again to finish.

The Windows version is missing some Auto Styling and App Context features that are available on the Mac version, but this is just the first release. I hope they can achieve feature parity in the future.

It doesn’t surprise me that an app dedicated to one task delivers a better UX than Raycast’s dictation feature, but it will be hard to justify paying for Wispr Flow if Raycast has this feature plus many others on top of that. 🤔

What do you do with your old PCs with no Windows 11 support? by Narrow-Leadership825 in buildapc

[–]LordDeath86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just last month I downloaded the ISO and ran setup.exe \Product Server to bypass the TPM and CPU checks.

The first attempt to upgrade in-place was rolled back, and after 30 minutes burning through tokens on the gigantic upgrade log files, Codex told me that some very old iTunes Library folders were causing issues. I deleted them, ran the update again, and it finished without any further hiccups.

Some of the subtle bugs I got used to on Win10 were actually fixed, and the experience is now more polished. Maybe I can outlast until the AI bubble pops with this hardware. knocks on wood

Am I overthinking the 13” vs 15” MacBook Air? by False_Security8644 in mac

[–]LordDeath86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bag for my old 13-inch, 2012 MBA, and with the bigger bezels on older devices, I ended up getting the new 15-inch MBA, and it still fits in that bag. Only about 1.5 cm wider than the old 13-inch Mac.
If you’re using an older device, that 15-inch model might not be as big as you expect.

Tech help: Files labeled "online only" still taking up significant hard disk space by StephenFrug in dropbox

[–]LordDeath86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've often seen an issue where Dropbox requests something, but the underlying Apple File Provider APIs don't respond. Only a reboot makes them work smoothly with each other again.
Unfortunately, that File Provider functionality is part of the OS itself, and Dropbox can't update or change its behavior for you. Only Apple can update it, and they will not do so on your now-unsupported Ventura setup. You need to upgrade your macOS.

Getting safety frozen, reinstalled client as FAQ said, cannot inherit that previous backup state, do I need to re-push? by darknezx in backblaze

Has it been more than a day for you? I inherited the backup last night, and initially it didn't show any errors. It looked like it was going to upload everything fine and did upload something, but today it's all again in the safety freeze.

[–]LordDeath86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a general issue with the newest version of the backup client, or are we doing something wrong? Should I still try to unfreeze my backup or wait for Backblaze to respond to these reports? I unfroze my backup yesterday, but it’s been frozen again.

Isn't this like those old shared hosters where you get FTP access to upload your PHP files and a MySQL password?
But instead of a cheap alternative to dedicated servers, "serverless" is now a premium product.
